Start by identifying which audio path is failing: can the other person hear you, can you hear them, or are both directions affected? Then compare a phone call with recordings, audio routes, and another location. That helps distinguish an iPhone microphone or speaker problem from a blocked opening, routing mistake, noisy environment, or cellular-network issue.
Why is my iPhone call quality so bad?
Make a short test call and note what happens at both ends. Ask the other person whether your voice is faint, muffled, distorted, or cutting out. At the same time, listen for low, crackling, or intermittent caller audio. Try the call once normally and once on speakerphone.

During the call, raise the volume with the iPhone’s volume buttons and check the in-call audio destination. Switch between iPhone, speaker, and any connected Bluetooth device to see whether the problem follows one route. Apple describes these controls in its call audio routing guide. Check for a blocked microphone opening
Remove a case, film, or screen protector if it could cover an opening, then inspect the microphone openings for debris. Apple’s instruction is: “Remove any screen protectors, films or cases from your iPhone.” Use only gentle, dry cleaning; do not push anything into an opening.

Test the microphone outside a phone call
- Open Voice Memos and make a recording while speaking toward the bottom of the iPhone.
- Play it back and listen for the same muffling, distortion, or low volume.
- If the problem is specifically that callers cannot hear you on speakerphone, record a video while speaking toward the top of the phone. Repeat using both camera choices, then play the videos back.
These tests help separate a microphone or device problem from a cellular-call problem. If recordings sound unclear too, the microphone path is implicated; after removing obstructions, persistent problems may need service. Apple’s microphone troubleshooting steps describe these recording checks.
Check whether one app is affected
If the microphone works in calls and recordings but fails in only one app, check that app’s permission under Settings > Privacy & Security > Microphone. Make sure microphone access is enabled for the app.

Adjust volume while the call is active, then switch the destination between iPhone, speaker, and a connected Bluetooth device. Remove anything covering the receiver or speaker opening and check for visible dirt.

Do not use liquids or force debris further inside. Test speakerphone: if the sound remains static or crackly, try again later or from another location, since reception or the network can affect call audio. What should I check when iPhone calls are intermittent?
Compare a different location and check with the carrier
Try the same call from another location. A weak signal or local carrier problem can resemble a device fault. Check for iOS and carrier settings updates, then contact your carrier to ask whether your account is set up correctly, a local outage or billing block is affecting service, or the network shows call errors. Apple’s guidance for failed calls recommends these carrier-side checks.
Test Wi-Fi Calling if cellular coverage is weak
Wi-Fi Calling may help where cellular coverage is weak, but only if your carrier supports it and the Wi-Fi network works with the feature. To enable it, open Settings > Cellular, select the relevant line if you use multiple SIMs, tap Wi-Fi Calling, then turn on Wi-Fi Calling on This iPhone. If it will not activate, confirm carrier support, restart the iPhone, try a different Wi-Fi network, and then toggle Wi-Fi Calling. Reset Network Settings only as a later troubleshooting step: Apple says this erases saved Wi-Fi passwords, preferred networks, VPN settings, and APN settings.

When ambient noise is the issue, Voice Isolation can prioritize your voice and reduce background sound on supported calls. During a supported phone call, open Control Center, tap Phone Controls, and inspect Mic Mode. Apple lists Voice Isolation for phone calls on iOS 16.4 or later and Automatic Mic Mode on iOS 18 or later; supported devices include iPhone XR, iPhone XS models, and later. Availability can depend on the device, software, and call app. Mic Mode does not repair a blocked or damaged microphone or solve weak cellular coverage. Details are in Apple’s Mic Mode guidance.
