For a Pokémon game on Nintendo Switch, first match the fix to the problem: close any software that may be pausing a download, refresh download progress, and check for updates. For crashes or freezes, update the console and game, then check the title for corrupt data before considering a delete-and-redownload. Mobile steps depend on the specific app; Pokémon Café ReMix has its own compatibility, storage, and connection checks.
Start by identifying the platform and problem
These steps differ between Nintendo Switch and mobile, and a crash is not the same as a stalled download or an in-game message requiring a newer version. Note the game title, platform, exact error wording, and any error code before changing settings. Nintendo provides an error-code lookup; use the support page for your region if its address differs.

- Crash or freeze: the game closes, stops responding, or locks up.
- Stalled download: an initial download or update has stopped progressing.
- Missing update: the game or an online feature says a newer version is required.
Fix a stalled Nintendo Switch download
Nintendo notes that some games pause other downloads while they are being played. Save and close the running software, make sure the console is connected to the internet, then refresh the download status.
- Press HOME and save your progress, then highlight the running software, press X, and choose Close.
- Confirm the Switch can connect to the internet.
- Open your user page from the HOME Menu, select User Settings, then choose Update Download Progress.
- If progress remains stuck, restart the console and let it reconnect online without launching software that may pause the download.
A slow connection can make a download take longer; restarting is not a guaranteed fix. Nintendo’s full instructions are on its stuck-download troubleshooting page.

Install a missing Switch game update
For Pokémon Scarlet and Pokémon Violet, Nintendo documents this manual update path. Other games may have different title-specific requirements, so check the relevant support page rather than assuming the same version or instructions apply.
- Connect the Switch to the internet.
- On the HOME Menu, highlight the game’s icon without starting it.
- Press + or –, select Software Update, then choose Via the Internet.
Automatic updates depend on internet access and the console’s Software Auto-Updates setting. Nintendo says the latest update is required for online features in Scarlet and Violet, and players need the same game version to play together. Its Scarlet and Violet update page lists title-specific instructions and version history.

Troubleshoot a crash or freeze on Switch
Work from checks that do not remove the game toward more disruptive steps. Nintendo’s general guidance for downloaded software recommends checking for a system update, updating the title, checking its data for corruption, and deleting and redownloading the software if needed.

- Check for an update for the affected game. Highlight its HOME-menu icon, press + or –, and choose Software Update.
- Check the game for corrupt data: open System Settings > Data Management > Manage Software, select the affected title, then choose Check for Corrupt Data.
- If Nintendo’s checks do not resolve the issue, follow its instructions to delete and redownload the affected software. Consult Nintendo’s downloaded-software troubleshooting guide for the applicable steps.
- After confirming the console is up to date, restart it if a save-data problem remains, as described in Nintendo’s corrupted save-data guidance.
Deleting and redownloading software is not the same as erasing save data; do not erase a save as a routine reinstall step. Nintendo says a backed-up save can be downloaded only for supported games when the user has an active Nintendo Switch Online membership and a cloud save backup. The Scarlet and Violet update history records a past fix for a crash on the screen used to pair with a Pokémon GO account. That example shows why a title-specific patch may matter; it does not identify the cause of other crashes.

Check storage before retrying a large update
Low available space can prevent an update from downloading. For Scarlet and Violet version 3.0.1, Nintendo’s UK support page specified approximately 5.2 GB of available space in system memory or on a microSD card. That figure applies to that update, not to Pokémon updates generally. A compatible microSD card can add capacity if storage is the issue; it will not repair a connection problem, a game bug, or corrupted save data.
Troubleshoot Pokémon Café ReMix on mobile
Pokémon Support’s guidance is specifically for Café ReMix, not every Pokémon mobile app. Check the game’s troubleshooting page and try these checks:

- Confirm that the device meets the app’s recommended specifications.
- Ensure there is enough free storage for the app download and save data.
- Close other running apps, check that the internet connection is strong and stable, and restart the device.
- Keep in mind that meeting iOS or Android requirements does not guarantee compatibility on every device, and tablet functionality is not guaranteed.
