If Plex or Jellyfin cannot find media on your NAS, first check whether the share is mounted on the machine running the server. Then verify that the server’s service account can traverse the parent folders and read the files. If the server runs in a container, confirm the share is mapped into it and use the path visible inside the container—not just the NAS or host path—in the library settings.
Diagnose the problem in order
- Check the share from the server host. On the computer or NAS that runs Plex Media Server or Jellyfin, inspect the mounted folder and confirm the expected media directories and files are present. Seeing the share from another desktop does not prove the server process can access it. Plex requires the network resource to be mounted and available while Plex Media Server is running; Jellyfin’s storage documentation says SMB or NFS storage must be mounted directly to the operating system. Plex: Why is some of my content not found? · Jellyfin: Storage
- Confirm the mount is available when the server starts and scans. A manually mounted share may disappear after a restart or may not be ready when the server service starts. Arrange for the mount to persist and be available during server operation. The exact setup depends on the host operating system, NAS, and share protocol; Plex’s network-resource guidance describes platform-specific approaches but notes that the article has not been updated for its new support site. Plex: Why is some of my content not found?
- Check access for the server’s account. Identify which user or service identity runs Plex or Jellyfin, then check permissions on every parent directory as well as the media folder and files. The server needs to traverse directories and read media. Plex names
plex:plexas the usual default identity for NAS/Linux installations, but packages and other platforms can differ. Jellyfin’s Windows service guidance recommends grantingNETWORK SERVICEread and execute access to the media folder; parent paths must also permit folder listing. On Linux and in containers, use the configured service identity and UID/GID rather than assuming those examples apply. Plex: Why is some of my content not found? · Jellyfin: Storage · Jellyfin: Windows installation - If the server is containerized, inspect the volume mapping. Verify that the NAS share is mounted on the host, that the host directory is passed through to the container, and that the library points to the container-side path. For example, a host folder mounted at
/mnt/mediamight be exposed to a container at/media; configure the library with/mediaonly if that is the actual path inside your container. Jellyfin documents bind mounts for media, including read-only mounts, and warns that server paths must match paths available inside Docker. Jellyfin: Container installation · Jellyfin: Migration - Check whether the storage was unavailable during a scan or maintenance task. If the share drops offline during a Jellyfin scheduled task, items may be removed from the library. Plex also notes that scanning while a long copy is still underway can miss content; its support guidance suggests copying to a staging folder and moving completed files into the library location. Jellyfin: Storage · Plex: Scanning vs. Refreshing a Library
- If folders appear but particular titles do not, inspect the file types. Plex does not scan media inside archive files such as ZIP, RAR, GZIP, or TAR, and excludes certain disk-image formats, including ISO and IMG. An empty or incomplete library therefore does not by itself show that the NAS hardware has failed. Plex: Why is some of my content not found?
Separate missing files from missing automatic updates
If files already on the mounted share are readable but newly added files do not appear automatically, the issue may be change monitoring rather than access to the NAS. Jellyfin uses inotify for real-time changes on Linux; its documentation says NFS and rclone do not support inotify. TrueNAS SCALE’s Jellyfin guidance also identifies a real-time scanning limitation for SMB connections in the configuration it describes, and applies to SCALE 24.10.0 or higher. These caveats concern automatic detection; they do not establish that Jellyfin cannot read files already present on a mounted share. Jellyfin: Troubleshooting · TrueNAS SCALE: Jellyfin

Use the path the server can actually see
For a non-container installation, configure the library with the mounted path available to the host operating system. For a container installation, use the path inside the container. Jellyfin’s setup wizard allows multiple paths in one library; if an expected media folder is absent from the folder picker, its documentation points to permissions as a possible cause. Jellyfin: Libraries
There is no universal mount command or permission change for every NAS. The correct syntax and identity depend on the NAS, host OS, SMB or NFS configuration, server package, and container image. Confirm those details before changing mount settings or ACLs, and grant only the traversal, listing, and read access the server needs.
