First determine whether Playwright is timing out while waiting for fonts or completing the screenshot with fallback typography. For a timeout, inspect the font set and the specific face after the app reaches the state that uses it; for a completed but visually different image, check the font request and compare the browser and operating-system environment with the baseline. A stable screenshot can still show the wrong font.
Tell a font-readiness timeout from a fallback-font screenshot
Read the screenshot call log and classify the failure before changing timeouts or browser settings.

- Capture times out at “waiting for fonts to load”: investigate readiness. The document may be complete while the font set remains in the
loadingstate, or an expected face may be in error. - Capture completes, but letter shapes or line wrapping differ: investigate whether the intended face loaded and whether CI and baseline environments render it alike.
A current report describes a document whose readyState was complete while document.fonts.status remained loading. Document completion and font readiness are distinct signals. The report also describes its specific reproduction and unresolved limitations.

Wait for the application or component that inserts the relevant text, then inspect the browser’s font set. Checking too early can miss a face that is requested only after the target UI appears.

import { test, expect } from '@playwright/test';
test('page uses the expected web font', async ({ page }) => {
await page.goto('https://example.com');
// Replace this with a locator for the UI that triggers the target text/font.
await page.locator('[data-testid="headline"]').waitFor();
const fontState = await page.evaluate(async () => {
const before = document.fonts.status;
await document.fonts.ready;
const afterReady = document.fonts.status;
// Match the actual family, weight, style, and size used by the target text.
const loadedFaces = await document.fonts.load('400 16px "Your Family"');
return {

afterReady,

};
});
console.log('Font diagnostics:', fontState);
expect(fontState.faces).toContainEqual(expect.objectContaining({
family: 'Your Family',
weight: '400',
status: 'loaded'
}));
await expect(page).toHaveScreenshot();
});
Replace the example URL, selector, family, and weight with the page’s real values. If the page uses italic text, a different weight, or a different size, use a matching CSS font shorthand in document.fonts.load(). That call requests the face; it does not by itself prove the desired text is using it. Inspect the returned faces and, when necessary, the element’s computed font-family, font-weight, and font-style. MDN documents when FontFaceSet.ready resolves and how FontFaceSet.load() requests matching faces.
What the diagnostics tell you
document.fonts.statusreports the font set’s overall state, not whether every particular face you care about succeeded.- The entries in
document.fontsexpose each face’s family, weight, style, and status. Look for the exact variant used by the target content. document.fonts.readyis useful as a diagnostic wait, but do not treat its resolution alone as proof that the expected face was applied.document.fonts.load()lets you explicitly request a face. Confirm the matching entry reportsloaded, then investigate the rendered element and request if the screenshot still looks wrong.
Check the font declaration and network request
If the expected face is missing, stuck in loading, or in error, inspect the request and CSS rather than increasing the screenshot timeout and assuming the font eventually loaded.

- THE PERFECT VIEW: The 178/178 degree extra wide viewing angle prevents the shifting of colors when viewed from an offset angle, so you always get consistent colors
- Open the browser network log and find the font request. Confirm it is actually made and returns successfully in CI.
- Check the browser console and network errors for blocked requests, origin-policy problems, or an incorrect font path.
- Compare the CSS family, weight, style, and character subset requested by the page with the corresponding
@font-facedeclaration and available file. - Repeat the check after the target component is visible, particularly if the app loads its font or text lazily.
A failed or blocked request can leave the browser rendering a fallback face. The current WebKit report records an error face alongside a font set stuck in loading, but it does not establish why that site’s font state became stuck. Treat the network and face state in your own run as the evidence for your fix.
Make local and CI screenshot environments comparable
Visual output can vary even when application code and test assertions are unchanged. Microsoft Playwright’s visual-comparisons documentation states: “Browser rendering can vary based on the host OS, version, settings, hardware, power source (battery vs. power adapter), headless mode, and other factors.” It advises running tests in the same environment used to generate the baseline. See Playwright’s visual-comparisons guidance.

- Clear visuals. Fluid motion: A 144Hz refresh rate and 1ms MPRT deliver smooth, tear‑free motion across work, gaming, and streaming for clearer, more fluid viewing.
- Eye comfort: TÜV Rheinland 3‑star* certification reduces harmful blue light while preserving stunning color quality without compromise. *TÜV Rheinland 3-star eye comfort certification.
- Wide viewing angle: Get consistent views across a wide 178° /178° viewing angle.
- In-Plane Switching (IPS): See excellent color accuracy and consistency across wide viewing angles with In-plane Switching (IPS) technology.
- Ultra-thin bezels: Maximize your viewing experience with thin bezels.
For a local-versus-CI mismatch, compare these axes one at a time:
- Playwright package version and the browser installation associated with it.
- Browser engine and project: Chromium, Firefox, or WebKit.
- Operating system and container image.
- Headless mode and other relevant browser settings.
- Font response, requested face, and per-face status.
- The environment in which the screenshot baseline was generated.
Pin a compatible Playwright package and browser installation, and use the same OS/container and browser project for baseline generation and CI where practical. Playwright’s CI guidance covers its official Linux Docker image and installing browser dependencies with the CLI; it also suggests using one worker in CI when stability is the priority. Reducing workers may help stabilize a suite, but it does not repair a missing or failed font.

Isolate WebKit or platform-specific behavior
If the failure occurs in WebKit on Linux, compare the same test and Playwright version with another supported engine, then test WebKit on macOS if Safari fidelity matters. Change one axis at a time so you can tell whether the difference tracks with the engine or platform.
Playwright’s browser documentation explains that its WebKit build comes from current upstream WebKit and that macOS is closer to Safari behavior than Linux. An engine or OS comparison can localize a problem; it does not prove that switching engines fixes the underlying font issue.

What the current Linux WebKit report establishes
An issue opened September 29, 2026 describes a clean-container reproduction on Linux/amd64 with Playwright 1.63.0, bundled WebKit 26.6, and Ubuntu 24.04: the page reached document.readyState === 'complete', while document.fonts.status stayed loading and the screenshot timed out waiting for fonts. The reporter says a matching 1.60.0 control completed, but intermediate versions have not been bisected. The responsible WebKit change is unknown, and the behavior has not been reduced to a minimal offline page. This is a version-specific report with an unresolved root cause, not proof of a regression affecting all Playwright users. Details are in the issue report.
Do not confuse a stable screenshot with a correct font
toHaveScreenshot() waits for two consecutive screenshots to match. If the browser consistently renders a fallback font, those images can still match. Keep an explicit check for the required face when the font is part of the visual contract; screenshot stability alone does not verify font correctness. Playwright explains screenshot assertions and environment-sensitive rendering in its visual-comparisons documentation.
Use the font-wait bypass only to diagnose
The issue reporter says PW_TEST_SCREENSHOT_NO_FONTS_READY=1 allowed one capture, but did not fix the font state: a later ordinary capture timed out again. Skipping the wait may produce an image before the intended face is ready, so it is not a correctness fix for visual comparisons. Prefer logging font-set and per-face states, then fixing the request or investigating a specific, reproducible browser/version problem.
