Fix intermittent Playwright screenshot failures by identifying what changes between captures—usually the rendering environment or genuinely dynamic page content—before loosening the image comparison. Keep baseline generation and test runs on the same rendering setup, inspect repeated-run diffs, and only then apply targeted styling or justified tolerance changes.
Confirm the test is using Playwright’s screenshot assertion
For visual regression checks in Playwright Test, use expect(page).toHaveScreenshot(). On first use, Playwright generates a reference image rather than validating an approved design. Review that image and commit it as the baseline only after confirming it is correct.
import { test, expect } from '@playwright/test';
test('home page visual appearance', async ({ page }) => {
await page.goto('https://example.com');
await expect(page).toHaveScreenshot();
});
When a test fails, inspect the actual image, expected baseline, and diff artifact. A changed screenshot is evidence of a difference, not by itself evidence that the page or test is wrong.
Why screenshot tests pass locally but fail in CI
Rendering can vary with the host operating system, browser version and settings, hardware, power source, headless mode, and other runtime conditions. Playwright recommends generating and comparing baselines in the same environment. A baseline made on one setup may not match a capture made on another, even when the application code is unchanged. Playwright’s visual comparisons guide explains the environment caveat.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
- Compare the local and CI operating systems and browser versions.
- Check that both runs use the same Playwright project and browser configuration, including headless settings where relevant.
- Keep baseline creation and comparison on the same setup where practical. If you intentionally test multiple environments, maintain the appropriate project-specific baselines.
Snapshot names can include browser or platform information, and configured project identity can affect which baseline is selected. Verify that CI is comparing against the baseline for the project actually running, rather than accepting a different environment’s image as interchangeable.
Use the built-in screenshot stabilization before adding delays
toHaveScreenshot() waits until two consecutive screenshots are identical, then compares the last capture with the expected image. Its default animation handling disables CSS animations, transitions, and Web Animations; finite animations are fast-forwarded and infinite ones are temporarily canceled. These behaviors are documented in the PageAssertions API.
Because the assertion already waits for a stable capture and handles animations by default, a fixed sleep is not the best first response to a failure. It may simply make the test slower without removing the cause. If page content is still changing because of JavaScript-driven state or external content, make that state deterministic in the test when possible. If the changing region is intentionally outside the visual contract, use a narrow screenshot stylesheet treatment instead.

Repeat the test and inspect what changes
Use repeated runs to determine whether the failure is reproducible and whether the same area changes each time. Playwright’s repeatEach option is intended to help debug flaky tests; retries can also expose intermittent behavior. Preserve and compare the actual, baseline, and diff images rather than treating a later passing attempt as proof that the screenshot check is reliable.
import { defineConfig } from '@playwright/test';
export default defineConfig({
repeatEach: 5,
});
Use this temporarily to investigate, or retain an appropriate repeat count if it serves a deliberate purpose. Do not confuse diagnostic repetition with a fix: retries can reveal flakiness, but they do not make an unstable visual assertion deterministic. Playwright’s test retries documentation also notes that retries default to zero and describes flaky-test handling.
Handle only volatile regions that are outside the visual contract
If repeated diffs point to content that is expected to change but is not what the test is meant to validate, use stylePath to hide or neutralize that specific region for the screenshot. It can be set on an individual assertion or in project-wide screenshot options. Keep the treatment narrow: hiding a large area can conceal a real layout or content regression.

await expect(page).toHaveScreenshot({
stylePath: './tests/screenshot.css',
});
/* tests/screenshot.css */
.test-only-volatile-region {
visibility: hidden !important;
}
Use a selector that identifies only the volatile, nonessential element. Do not apply a broad rule such as hiding all images, text, or overlays unless those elements genuinely fall outside the test’s purpose. The visual comparisons documentation covers screenshot-specific styling and configuration.
Adjust screenshot comparison tolerance only after reviewing the diff
Playwright provides maxDiffPixels, maxDiffPixelRatio, and the per-pixel color threshold to control how much difference is accepted. These options can be useful when you have identified small, acceptable rendering noise. They should not be a blanket response to an unexplained failure: more tolerance can also allow a genuine visual regression to pass.

Keep flaky-test status visible in CI
Retries are off by default. If you enable them, use CI’s flaky-test reporting deliberately: Playwright supports failOnFlakyTests so tests classified as flaky can still make the CI run fail. That keeps a retry-pass from silently masking an unreliable visual check. Consult the retry configuration documentation for the setting and its availability in your installed Playwright version.
Choose a fix based on the evidence
| Observed evidence | Best next step | Trade-off |
|---|---|---|
| Local and CI use different operating systems, browsers, or rendering settings | Align the environments or create and compare baselines for the intended project environment. | Consistency may require using a common execution setup. |
| The same nonessential dynamic region changes while the rest of the page is stable | Make the page state deterministic, or narrowly neutralize that region with stylePath. |
Broad hiding can remove meaningful UI from visual coverage. |
| The diff shows understood, accepted pixel-level noise | Set a reviewed pixel or color threshold appropriate to the assertion. | Greater tolerance can admit real changes. |
| Failures are inconsistent across repeated runs | Use repeatEach, preserve artifacts, and inspect the changing area; configure retries and flaky reporting as needed. |
Repeats and retries help diagnose or expose flakiness, but do not resolve its cause by themselves. |
Troubleshoot common failure patterns
The test fails only in CI
Compare CI and local operating system, browser version, headless mode, project configuration, and baseline identity. If those differ, align the setup or use baselines generated for the environment being tested.
The failure points to a changing banner, timestamp, or other dynamic region
Check whether the element is part of the visual contract. If it is, control the underlying test state. If it is not, apply a targeted stylePath rule and confirm the remaining diff still catches meaningful changes.

The test fails after waiting for a screenshot
toHaveScreenshot() already waits for two matching consecutive captures and suppresses animations by default. Investigate changing application state, external content, or environment differences before adding a longer timeout or fixed sleep.
Increasing tolerance makes the failure disappear
Review the diff to establish whether the difference is harmless rendering noise. If the cause is unknown or the change affects meaningful UI, revert the broad tolerance and diagnose the source instead.
A retry passes, but the test still fails intermittently
Treat the test as flaky rather than fixed. Repeat it to collect consistent artifacts, investigate the region or setup that changes, and consider failOnFlakyTests so CI continues to surface the issue.
