Then wake the phone, check that it is scanning, remove anything covering your face, improve the lighting, and hold the phone upright about 40 cm away. If recognition still fails after those checks, clean the top of the screen or enroll your face again.
1. Confirm your Pixel supports Face Unlock and it is set up
Google lists Face Unlock on Pixel 7 and later, including Pixel Fold and Pixel Tablet. Availability and menu names may vary by model and software version. Check Google’s Face Unlock instructions if you are unsure whether your device supports it.

On your device, open Settings > Security & privacy > Device unlock > Face and Fingerprint Unlock (the exact labels may differ). Confirm that a face is enrolled and that unlocking the device with Face Unlock is enabled. If Settings offers Add face, complete enrollment first. Google’s setup guidance covers the available settings.
2. If Face Unlock does not activate or scan
Wake the screen by tapping it, then look for an animation or ring around the camera. If Face Unlock does not start scanning, check that Tap to check phone and Lift to check phone are enabled. Their settings locations can vary by software version; search for those labels in Settings if you cannot find them. Google distinguishes activation problems from face-recognition failures.

3. If the phone scans but does not recognise you
Remove coverings and adjust the light
Take off sunglasses and any face covering, then try in sufficient light. Very bright direct sunlight can also interfere, so move into shade if needed. Google notes: “When there isn’t sufficient light or when you have a face covering or sunglasses, Face Unlock might not work.” See Google’s recognition troubleshooting guidance.
Hold the phone in a consistent position
Hold the phone vertically, directly in front of your face, at about 40 cm away. Google recommends this position for face recognition.

Clean the top of the screen
Wipe the top of the screen with a soft, dry cloth, then try again. Google does not require a specialty cleaning product. Follow Google’s cleaning advice.
4. Re-enroll if your appearance has changed significantly
If your appearance has changed substantially, delete the existing face model before adding a new one. During enrollment, use your typical appearance and a familiar place where you normally use the phone. For example, if you usually wear glasses or a headscarf, enroll with them on. Google’s instructions explain how to remove and add a face model.
5. Use your PIN, pattern, or password when needed
If Face Unlock still does not work, swipe up and enter the device’s PIN, pattern, or password. Google says Face Unlock may be declined for additional security in some situations, so a failed face check does not necessarily mean the feature is broken. See Google’s Face Unlock security guidance.

Google says the face model is stored securely on the device and processed there; it is used for Face Unlock rather than shared with other Google services or apps. Google also cautions that Face Unlock may be less secure than a strong PIN, pattern, or password. Someone who looks very similar to you, such as an identical sibling, might unlock the phone, and another person may be able to unlock it if the phone is held up to your face. Keep the device in a safe place and use its documented lockdown option when you need to disable face recognition temporarily. Google explains the privacy and security details.
