Fix phpMyAdmin by identifying which connection hop is failing: browser to Nginx over HTTPS, Nginx to PHP-FPM over FastCGI, or PHP/phpMyAdmin to MySQL or MariaDB. A valid certificate proves only that the first hop works. A 502 usually points to PHP-FPM, while “mysqli missing,” socket error 2002, access-denied messages, and authentication-plugin errors each require a different check.

Test each layer in that order. Do not change database credentials while Nginx is still returning a 502, and do not troubleshoot certificates when phpMyAdmin already renders its login page.

Verify the Nginx HTTPS virtual host
Confirm DNS, port 443, and the intended server block
Resolve the hostname to the address of the Nginx machine, then confirm that firewalls and security groups allow TCP 443. The certificate must contain the exact hostname in its subject alternative names. A certificate for another name, an incomplete intermediate chain, or a request landing on the default virtual host can look like an application failure even when PHP and MySQL are healthy.

Inspect the active Nginx configuration rather than only the file you edited:
sudo nginx -t
sudo nginx -T | lessIn the HTTPS server block, check that listen 443 ssl (and, if used, HTTP/2 or HTTP/3 settings), server_name, certificate paths, and the phpMyAdmin root or alias are correct. If HTTP redirects to HTTPS, make sure the redirect points to the public hostname and does not repeatedly rewrite an already secure request.

Keep the public URL consistent behind a proxy
When a load balancer or reverse proxy terminates TLS before forwarding to Nginx, the application must still know the external HTTPS URL. Keep the external host and scheme consistent in forwarded headers and phpMyAdmin settings. The phpMyAdmin configuration option ForceSSL is deprecated; reverse-proxy deployments may require PmaAbsoluteUri so generated links and redirects use the correct public address. Do not force HTTPS in several independent layers without checking the resulting redirect chain.
Prove that PHP executes before testing MySQL
Create a temporary file in the same document root and location used by phpMyAdmin:

?>Request that file over HTTPS, then remove it. If it does not execute, the problem is still Nginx or PHP-FPM. A successful certificate check or static HTML response does not prove that PHP is being passed to FPM.
Repair the Nginx-to-PHP-FPM FastCGI path
Check the service and the configured endpoint
Use the service name and socket that match the installed PHP version. Examples:

sudo ss -lx | grep phpIf FPM listens on TCP instead, use its configured address, such as 127.0.0.1:9000, rather than a Unix socket. Do not copy a socket path from an old PHP version after upgrading packages. After correcting the configuration, run sudo nginx -t, reload Nginx, and restart or reload the matching PHP-FPM service.
Make sure the script filename resolves to phpMyAdmin
A missing or incorrect SCRIPT_FILENAME can produce “File not found” responses or an apparently blank page. The value must combine the real phpMyAdmin document root with $fastcgi_script_name. Check aliases carefully: an alias location often needs an explicit absolute path instead of a generic $document_root.

Running php -m checks the command-line binary. Nginx may call another PHP version whose FPM process lacks mysqli. Verify the loaded modules through the temporary HTTPS PHP file or FPM’s own information output, and look for mysqli in the loaded extensions. Install or enable the package for the specific PHP-FPM version, then reload FPM and Nginx. phpMyAdmin uses mysqli to connect to MySQL or MariaDB; having the extension in CLI PHP is not sufficient.
Work around HTTP/3 hostname issues
If hostname-dependent behavior fails only when HTTP/3 is enabled, add this parameter inside the PHP location or applicable server block:
fastcgi_param HTTP_HOST $host;A missing HTTP_HOST variable can cause incorrect absolute URLs or redirects in Nginx HTTP/3 deployments. Re-test over both HTTP/2 and HTTP/3 after reloading Nginx.
Verify the database endpoint in config.inc.php
Open phpMyAdmin’s config.inc.php and inspect the server entry actually selected by the installation. Host, port, socket, and authentication settings must describe one reachable endpoint. A Unix socket is a local filesystem path on the machine running PHP; it cannot reach a database on another server.

Use a local Unix socket deliberately
For a local MySQL or MariaDB service, determine the real socket instead of guessing:
mysql -NBe "SHOW VARIABLES LIKE 'socket';"
mysqladmin variables | grep socketThen configure the matching path:
$cfg['Servers'][$i]['host'] = 'localhost';
$cfg['Servers'][$i]['socket'] = '/run/mysqld/mysqld.sock';Paths vary by distribution and database package. If the service is stopped, the socket will be absent even when the path is correct. Check the database service and its log before changing phpMyAdmin.
Switch to explicit TCP when appropriate
Use TCP when MySQL listens on a network address, when the database is remote, or when socket discovery is unreliable:

$cfg['Servers'][$i]['socket'] = '';Replace the address and port with the database server’s actual listener. On some systems, localhost causes the client to prefer a Unix socket, while 127.0.0.1 forces TCP. Do not set a local socket path for a remote host.

Record the original values, change either the socket or the TCP host/port, reload the affected service, and reproduce the error. Simultaneously changing host, port, credentials, and SSL settings hides the cause and makes rollback difficult.
Resolve credentials, grants, and authentication plugins
Test the same account from the server
Use the MySQL client from the Nginx/PHP host with the same host name, username, and endpoint that phpMyAdmin uses. For TCP:
mysql -h 127.0.0.1 -P 3306 -u dbuser -pFor a socket, specify the exact path:
mysql --socket=/run/mysqld/mysqld.sock -u dbuser -pIf this test fails, phpMyAdmin cannot succeed with the same parameters. Verify the password without placing it in shell history, and confirm that the account is allowed from the host presented by the client.

Check the account’s host component
MySQL accounts are identified by both user and host, such as 'dbuser'@'localhost' and 'dbuser'@'127.0.0.1'. They can have different passwords, grants, or authentication plugins. An account that works through a socket may be rejected over TCP, and the reverse can also occur. Inspect the matching account row and its grants with an administrative account before altering anything.
Handle unsupported authentication methods
An authentication-plugin error means the server requested a method that the client libraries used by PHP-FPM do not support. Confirm which PHP-FPM version and MySQL client libraries are loaded, then choose a compatible, supported authentication configuration. Do not “fix” the message by weakening authentication blindly; coordinate any account-plugin change with the database version and application requirements.
Keep browser HTTPS separate from MySQL SSL
HTTPS from the browser normally terminates at Nginx or a proxy. It does not automatically encrypt the separate PHP-to-MySQL connection. For a remote database, configure MySQL SSL in phpMyAdmin’s server definition when the database requires or recommends it.

$cfg['Servers'][$i]['ssl_verify'] = true;Use only the files and settings supplied by the database administrator. The CA establishes which server certificates are trusted; a client certificate and key may be required for mutual authentication. Encryption alone does not authenticate the server. Setting ssl_verify to false disables server-certificate verification, so treat it as a narrowly documented exception rather than a general connection fix.
A browser certificate error belongs to the Nginx/proxy layer. A MySQL CA, client-key, or verification error belongs to the database connection layer. Fix the layer named by the error instead of replacing the unrelated certificate.
Read logs in the order the request travels
- Browser network and security panel: record the exact TLS, redirect, status-code, and hostname error.
- Nginx access and error logs: look for the selected virtual host, upstream connection failures, permission errors, and FastCGI messages.
- PHP-FPM service log: check startup failures, missing extensions, worker crashes, and permission problems.
- phpMyAdmin or PHP application output: capture the complete mysqli, socket, credential, or SSL message.
- MySQL or MariaDB log: check listener state, rejected authentication, TLS negotiation, and server-side errors at the same timestamp.
phpMyAdmin’s syslog setting is not the same file as the Nginx or Apache web-server log. Follow the configured paths for the services on your operating system, and correlate timestamps rather than reading only the last line.

When the page returns 502
- Run
sudo nginx -tand inspect the Nginx error log for the upstream path. - Check that the matching PHP-FPM service is running and that its socket or TCP listener exists.
- Compare
fastcgi_passwith the live PHP version; remove stale version numbers. - Verify
SCRIPT_FILENAMEagainst the actual phpMyAdmin file. - Request the temporary PHP test file, then reload Nginx and FPM after the correction.
When phpMyAdmin reports mysqli missing
- Identify the PHP version used by the FPM pool serving the HTTPS virtual host.
- Install or enable that version’s mysqli extension.
- Confirm mysqli through a web-served PHP check, not only
php -m. - Reload PHP-FPM and Nginx, then remove the diagnostic file.
When error 2002 mentions a socket
- Check that MySQL or MariaDB is running and inspect its configured socket.
- Compare that path with
$cfg['Servers'][$i]['socket']. - Ensure the PHP process can access the socket.
- If the database listens on TCP, clear the socket setting and use its hostname and port explicitly.
When the message says access denied
- Test the account with the same endpoint from the server’s MySQL client.
- Check the exact
'user'@'host'row, password, grants, and authentication plugin. - Use the host form that matches phpMyAdmin: socket/localhost and TCP/127.0.0.1 can select different accounts.
- Only after credentials work should you investigate phpMyAdmin-specific configuration.
When HTTPS redirects back to HTTP
- Inspect every proxy and Nginx redirect, including forwarded scheme headers.
- Confirm the public hostname and scheme used by the reverse proxy.
- Remove deprecated ForceSSL settings and configure the canonical absolute URI only where the proxy topology requires it.
- If the issue occurs only with HTTP/3, add
fastcgi_param HTTP_HOST $host;and retest.
Choose the smallest safe deployment change
The right fix depends on where the failure occurs and who owns that layer. A self-managed VPS lets you correct an FPM socket, package, or database account directly, but you must maintain service units, certificates, permissions, and monitoring. Managed hosting may hide those files and require the provider to repair PHP-FPM or database listeners; provide the exact timestamp, URL, status code, and error text instead of repeatedly changing application settings. A TLS certificate service can help with a genuine hostname or chain problem, while it cannot repair wrong database credentials, a stopped FPM pool, or a missing extension.

Requirements and pitfalls checklist
- phpMyAdmin needs a web server such as Nginx and a PHP runtime; a certificate alone does not execute PHP.
- The PHP-FPM SAPI serving the HTTPS site must load
mysqli, even if the CLI binary does. - Keep the phpMyAdmin root, alias, and
SCRIPT_FILENAMEconsistent; an alias can make a generic$document_rootpoint to the wrong file. - Use a socket only for a database on the PHP host. A remote database requires a hostname or address and port.
- Remember that
localhostand127.0.0.1can select different MySQL account rows. - Protect
config.inc.php, database passwords, CA files, client certificates, and private keys with restrictive permissions. - Delete temporary PHP diagnostics immediately; they can disclose version and configuration details.
- Do not disable MySQL certificate verification simply to make a connection succeed. Document any exception and restore verification when the trust chain is corrected.
- When HTTP/3 is involved, test HTTP/2 as a control and add the explicit
HTTP_HOSTFastCGI parameter if hostname behavior differs.
A repeatable verification runbook
- Record the complete browser message, URL, timestamp, and response code.
- Confirm DNS, TCP 443, certificate hostname, and the selected Nginx server block.
- Run
nginx -t, inspect the active configuration, and verify that a temporary PHP file executes through the same location. - Check the FPM service, live socket or listener, extension set, and FastCGI filename mapping.
- Read
config.inc.phpas one endpoint definition: host, port, socket, credentials, and any MySQL SSL files. - Reproduce the connection with the MySQL client using the identical host form and account.
- Compare Nginx, FPM, phpMyAdmin, and database log entries at the same timestamp.
- Change one variable, reload only the affected service, retest, and retain the new exact error for the next decision.
Frequently Asked Questions
Does a valid HTTPS certificate prove that phpMyAdmin can connect to MySQL?
No. It proves only that the browser reached the Nginx or proxy TLS endpoint. PHP-FPM still has to execute the application, and the PHP runtime must reach MySQL or MariaDB with the correct endpoint and credentials.
Why does phpMyAdmin fail when the command-line PHP shows mysqli?
The CLI and PHP-FPM can be different PHP versions or have different loaded modules. Check mysqli through the FPM runtime serving the Nginx site, install it for that version, and reload FPM and Nginx.

Many MySQL clients prefer a Unix socket for localhost but use TCP for 127.0.0.1. Those paths can match different account grants, passwords, or socket locations. Configure the endpoint deliberately and test it with the same MySQL client syntax.
What does socket error 2002 mean?
The client could not reach the local MySQL socket. Check that the database service is running, find its actual socket path, compare it with phpMyAdmin’s socket setting, and switch to an explicit TCP host and port when appropriate.
Do I need MySQL SSL when phpMyAdmin already uses HTTPS?
HTTPS protects the browser-to-Nginx hop. MySQL SSL is a separate PHP-to-database setting and may be required for a remote database. Configure the CA, client certificate, key, and verification options supplied by the database administrator.
What should I do if HTTPS keeps redirecting to HTTP?
Check every proxy and Nginx redirect, forwarded scheme headers, and the public hostname. ForceSSL is deprecated; a reverse-proxy installation may need PmaAbsoluteUri. If the problem appears only with HTTP/3, pass HTTP_HOST explicitly to FastCGI.

Can a hosting provider or certificate service fix every phpMyAdmin connection error?
No. Providers can help with infrastructure they manage, and certificate services address genuine TLS name or chain problems. Neither automatically fixes a dead PHP-FPM socket, missing mysqli extension, wrong database host, or invalid account grant.
