A notice or warning may leave a page usable but signal code that will fail after a PHP or WordPress update. A fatal PHP error stops execution and may appear to visitors as WordPress’s “critical error” screen. The same evidence-led workflow handles both, with Recovery Mode or filesystem access providing a route back into the site when wp-admin is unavailable.

Protect the site before changing anything
Do not begin by editing a plugin file on the live site. WordPress Developer Resources states: “Before making any modifications to your website, verify that you have either utilized a staging environment or taken an appropriate backup of your site.” Create a current backup that you can restore, or reproduce the problem on staging. Include the database and the site files in the backup so that a configuration change or rollback can be undone.
Write down the symptom before you alter the environment. Note whether the message appears on every page, one template, wp-admin, a form submission, a REST or AJAX request, or a scheduled task. Scope matters: a warning limited to one request usually points to the code used by that request, while a failure across the whole site suggests a shared plugin, theme, PHP runtime, memory setting or core-file problem.

Use the symptom to set an initial priority
| What you see | What it means for triage | First safe move |
|---|---|---|
| Notice or deprecated message | The request often continues, but code is outdated or non-ideal and may break after a future PHP or WordPress change. | Log the complete entry, identify its owner and plan an update or code correction. |
| Warning | A runtime operation failed or returned an unexpected value; a page may show missing data or degraded behavior. | Use the file path, line number and request context to locate the component, then test an update or temporary deactivation. |
| Fatal error or “critical error” | PHP stopped execution. The affected request cannot finish until the failing code is bypassed or corrected. | Use Recovery Mode, the fatal-error email or link, or filesystem access to disable the suspected component. |
Enable WordPress logging without displaying errors publicly
For diagnosis, turn on logging but keep messages out of the public response. In wp-config.php, set these constants before the line that says WordPress should stop editing the file:
define( 'WP_DEBUG', true );
define( 'WP_DEBUG_LOG', true );
define( 'WP_DEBUG_DISPLAY', false );
WP_DEBUG enables WordPress debugging. WP_DEBUG_LOG records PHP errors in wp-content/debug.log by default, or in a configured log path. WP_DEBUG_DISPLAY set to false prevents the messages from being printed in pages sent to visitors. This combination gives you evidence without exposing file paths, code details or other internals in the browser.
Check the configuration carefully
- Keep each constant defined once. Duplicate definitions can make it unclear which value is active.
- Preserve the punctuation and quotation marks in the example. A syntax mistake in
wp-config.phpcan create a new fatal error before WordPress loads. - Do not use a cropped browser screenshot as your only record. The complete log entry is needed to see the error class, path, line and surrounding context.
- Use the logging configuration only while investigating on production. Once verification is complete, return
WP_DEBUGtofalse, as described in the cleanup section below.
Reproduce the problem and read the complete log entry
After enabling logging, repeat the exact action that causes the message. Open the affected front-end URL, the relevant admin screen, the form submission, or the REST/AJAX request. If the issue is intermittent, record the time and the action so that you can match it to the server and WordPress logs.
For each entry, capture all of the following:
- Error class: notice, deprecated, warning or fatal.
- Exact message: preserve the wording, including function names, class names and argument details.
- File path: note whether the path is inside a plugin directory, the active theme, custom code, WordPress core or another server location.
- Line number: treat it as a starting point, not automatic proof that the line alone is defective; the bad value may have originated earlier.
- Request: identify the page, admin action, REST/AJAX call or scheduled task that triggered it.
- Sequence or stack context: when available, keep the surrounding entries because they show which component called the failing code.
The path and line number are often the quickest route to ownership. A directory named for a plugin points you toward that plugin’s maintainer; a theme directory points toward the active theme; a custom-code directory indicates code maintained by your team; a core path calls for a core-file check rather than an immediate plugin change.
Why the full entry matters
A message such as “undefined variable” without its path and line cannot distinguish a theme template from a plugin callback. Likewise, a screenshot that cuts off the request or preceding stack entries can lead you to deactivate the wrong component. Keep the original text in a case record so another administrator or developer can reproduce the same diagnosis.
Classify the likely root cause
WordPress identifies plugin conflicts, theme compatibility problems, an incompatible PHP version, memory limits and corrupted WordPress files as common causes. Treat these as hypotheses to test against the log rather than as reasons to make several changes at once.

Plugin conflict or outdated plugin
If the path names a plugin, first check whether a compatible release is available. Update it in the protected environment and reproduce the original request. If no compatible release exists, deactivate that plugin temporarily and test again. A warning that disappears when the plugin is inactive is strong evidence of ownership, but keep the plugin disabled until you have a supported update, a corrected build or a replacement.
Theme compatibility problem
A theme path, especially one reached while rendering a particular template, points to theme code or a theme extension. Test the current theme’s compatible release in staging. If the site can be switched safely for diagnosis, use a known-good theme only long enough to determine whether the message follows the theme; do not make an untested theme change on the public site.
Custom code
If the path leads to a site-specific include, snippet or custom module, record the change that introduced it and compare the failing call with the PHP and WordPress APIs supported by the site. Correct the code in a development or staging copy, then test the full request path. Editing a live file makes rollback and attribution harder.
PHP-version incompatibility
Compare the server’s PHP version with the requirements of the current WordPress core, theme and plugins. A component may rely on behavior removed or changed by the running PHP version. Do not assume that switching PHP alone is the fix: the failing component may need an update, replacement or code correction. Record the version before and after any controlled test so that the result is reproducible.
Memory limit
A memory-related entry indicates that the request exceeded an available limit. Determine which request fails and whether one component is consuming the memory. Raising a limit without addressing a runaway or incompatible component can hide the symptom and leave the underlying failure in place, so test the component and the runtime together.
Corrupted WordPress files
If the path points to core files and the same files differ from the expected WordPress installation, restore clean core files from a trusted, matching release in staging and retest. Do not overwrite the site’s content or configuration while replacing core files. A core-file repair is not a substitute for updating a plugin or theme named in the actual stack context.

Isolate one component at a time
Once you have a likely owner, make the smallest reversible change that can confirm it. Updating, deactivating, rolling back or changing a configuration value all alter the test conditions; doing several together prevents you from knowing which action worked.
- Record the baseline. Save the complete log entry, the URL or action that triggers it, the active plugin and theme versions, the PHP version and the current configuration.
- Update the named component in staging. Use a release that states compatibility with the site’s WordPress and PHP versions. Reproduce the same request and compare the log.
- Deactivate only the suspected component if an update is not available. Retest the original request and a nearby feature that depends on the component.
- Reactivate and test another hypothesis if the message remains. Do not leave unrelated components disabled as a diagnostic shortcut.
- Confirm the owner before deploying. The error should disappear, move, or change in a way that matches the hypothesis; otherwise continue with the next component or runtime check.
When wp-admin is unavailable
WordPress Recovery Mode automatically activates when WordPress detects a fatal PHP error during a regular page load. Recovery Mode was introduced in WordPress 5.2. If WordPress sends a fatal-error email, follow its Recovery Mode link and use the protected session to deactivate or update the component identified in the error.
Free tools Windows power users keep installed
One-click scans. No signup required.
If no email or link is available, use filesystem access to rename the suspected plugin directory so WordPress cannot load it, then test whether control returns. This is a temporary diagnostic action: record the original directory name, change only the suspected directory, and restore the name after the test if it is not the cause. A theme-related fatal may require switching or disabling the affected theme through the same controlled filesystem approach.
Handle each PHP message type correctly
Notice and deprecated messages
These messages commonly identify outdated or non-ideal code rather than an immediate outage. Do not ignore them indefinitely. Use the path and line to locate the owner, check for a compatible update and schedule a code correction before a future PHP or WordPress change turns the notice into a warning or fatal error.
Warnings
A warning can produce missing data or degraded behavior even when the page loads. Check the values passed into the function named in the message, the request that supplied them and the component that owns the file. Update, configure or replace that component in staging, then verify the page and the related form, REST/AJAX call or scheduled task.
Fatal errors and critical errors
A fatal error stops execution, so restoring access takes priority over polishing the message. Use Recovery Mode, the fatal-error email or filesystem access to bypass the suspected plugin or theme. Once the site is reachable, preserve the original log entry and fix the owner in staging rather than repeatedly disabling components on production.

Choose a fix with a deliberate decision matrix
Before applying a change, compare the dimensions below. The safest fix is not always the fastest one; it is the one that resolves the error while keeping the change reversible and the verification broad enough for the site’s traffic.
| Decision axis | Questions to answer | How it affects the fix |
|---|---|---|
| Severity | Is it a notice, warning or fatal? | Prioritize a fatal access-restoration path; schedule and correct nonfatal messages before they escalate. |
| Scope | One request, one page, wp-admin, or the entire site? | Narrow scope favors the component used by that request; site-wide scope raises the priority of shared code and runtime checks. |
| Owner | Plugin, theme, custom code, WordPress core or host? | Direct the update, replacement or support request to the party that controls the failing code. |
| Reversibility | Can you undo a configuration toggle, update, deactivation, rollback or code edit? | Prefer a reversible staging test before an irreversible production edit. |
| Environment | Are you testing on staging or production? | Use staging for code, PHP and component changes; limit production to controlled deployment and observation. |
| Verification coverage | Have you tested front end, admin, forms, REST/AJAX and scheduled tasks? | A fix is incomplete if it clears one page but breaks another request path. |
Check the PHP runtime and server logs
WordPress’s debugging guidance recommends comparing the site’s PHP version and server error log with the requirements of the installed core, theme and plugins. The server log can reveal failures that do not appear in the WordPress log or can show the request immediately before a WordPress error.
- Record the PHP version currently used by the affected site.
- Record the WordPress core, active theme and relevant plugin versions.
- Compare those versions with each component’s stated requirements and compatibility information.
- Review the server error log for the same timestamp and request.
- Make one controlled runtime or component change on staging and reproduce the original failure.
- Keep the change only if it resolves the error without introducing failures in other tested paths.
A PHP change can expose incompatible code, while a plugin update can require a different PHP version. Treat the runtime and the failing component as related variables and document both; changing PHP blindly can trade one error for another.
Use deeper debugging tools only in a safe environment
For a straightforward plugin or theme conflict, the log and controlled isolation steps are usually enough. When the call path remains unclear, WordPress documents additional tools:
Recommended Free Tools
- Debugging plugins: useful for inspecting hooks and runtime behavior during diagnosis. Use them on local or staging environments, not as a reason to expose diagnostics publicly.
- PHPUnit: supports repeatable automated tests for custom code and integrations. A test that reproduces the failing input helps prevent regressions after the fix.
- WP-CLI plugin test scaffolding: provides a structured way to create tests around plugin behavior instead of relying only on manual clicks.
- Xdebug: enables step debugging when the log identifies a complex call path but not the state that caused it.
These tools belong on local or staging environments. Keep production focused on logging, controlled reproduction and service restoration; move breakpoints, test scaffolding and experimental code away from visitor traffic.
Verify the fix across the whole site
Clearing the original message on one URL is not sufficient. On staging, repeat the exact action that first failed and then run a coverage checklist:
Best Value
- Load the affected front-end page and at least one representative page using the same template or component.
- Open the relevant wp-admin screen and save a change if that was part of the original workflow.
- Submit the affected forms and confirm validation, processing and confirmation behavior.
- Exercise REST and AJAX features that use the repaired code.
- Run or observe scheduled tasks that depend on the component.
- Review the new log for the original message and for new warnings created by the change.
- Check that the site remains usable with the suspected component enabled in its final configuration.
Keep the original error text and the successful retest results together. That record makes a later recurrence easier to distinguish from a new, unrelated failure.
Deploy the correction and clean up debugging
- Take a fresh backup or confirm the staging snapshot that contains the tested fix.
- Deploy the smallest tested change: the compatible update, corrected code, replacement component, configuration adjustment or core-file repair.
- Repeat the front-end, wp-admin, form, REST/AJAX and scheduled-task checks on production.
- Confirm that the public response contains no PHP warnings or paths while
WP_DEBUG_DISPLAYremains disabled. - Set
WP_DEBUGback tofalseon production after verification. Preserve the relevant logs according to the site’s operational and retention policy, and remove temporary diagnostic settings or tools that are no longer needed.
Leaving production debugging enabled after the investigation can expose implementation details and generate unnecessary log volume. The finished state is a working site, a documented root cause and a repeatable test—not merely a hidden message.

The log file is empty or does not change
Verify that all three constants are present with the intended values, that the failing request is being reproduced after the change and that the configured log path is the one you are checking. If the failure occurs before WordPress can initialize, use the server error log and the fatal-error email or Recovery Mode path. A syntax error in wp-config.php can also prevent the logging configuration from taking effect.
The warning disappears but the feature is broken
Silencing output is not the same as fixing the runtime problem. Re-run the form, REST/AJAX request or scheduled task that depends on the code and inspect its result, not just the page’s appearance. Restore the component if necessary and continue with an update, replacement or code correction.
Deactivating one plugin changes nothing
Confirm that the request actually uses that plugin and that the deactivation took effect in the environment being tested. If the path names another component, restore the first plugin and isolate the next one. Keep one change per test so that the eventual owner is clear.
The site fails only after a PHP change
Match the new PHP version against the requirements of every component named in the log. Roll back only as a controlled staging comparison, then update or replace incompatible code rather than assuming the older runtime is a permanent solution.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsOnly a scheduled task or background request fails
Use the request context and timestamp from the log, then verify the associated cron, REST or AJAX path separately. A clean front-end page does not prove that background processing works; include that path in staging and production verification.
What a successful repair looks like
You have a defensible repair when the original request completes, the responsible owner is identified, the underlying component or runtime condition is corrected, and the same feature works across front end, administration and background interfaces that depend on it. The log remains available for the retention period your operation requires, but public pages do not display PHP internals and production debugging is disabled.
The most reliable habit is to treat every warning as evidence: protect the site, capture the complete entry, change one variable, test broadly and clean up after deployment. That process resolves today’s message while reducing the chance that an outdated component becomes tomorrow’s critical error.
