Check access and network logs before changing a timeout; use a readiness wait only when the page loads but the UI appears late.
Identify the Percy timeout you actually have
Percy describes a page timeout as the page remaining in the loading state for more than 30 seconds during asset discovery. Its troubleshooting guide suggests checking slow assets, increasing the page-load timeout, considering more CI resources, or removing a troublesome asset from the rendered DOM when that is appropriate. The documented example sets PERCY_PAGE_LOAD_TIMEOUT to 60000 milliseconds; treat that as an example to test, not a guaranteed fix or a setting that is necessarily identical across Percy SDK versions. BrowserStack’s Percy page-timeout guide
| What you see | What it suggests | First check |
|---|---|---|
| Page-load timeout or “page loading failed” | Percy could not load the page or complete the page-loading stage. | Reachability, authentication, slow assets, and page-load timeout. |
| Network-idle timeout | The page did not reach the expected period with no network requests during discovery. | Pending, repeated, or long-lived requests and the relevant network-idle setting. |
| Blank or stuck-loading capture | The captured page may be inaccessible, not ready, or affected by JavaScript behavior. | Page access, JavaScript configuration, and application readiness before capture. |
| Snapshot misses a late element | The page may have loaded, but the desired UI state was not ready when Percy captured it. | Wait for a stable selector or, if necessary, a deliberate fixed delay. |
Percy classifies page-load and network-idle failures separately; a longer wait for one stage does not necessarily resolve a problem in the other. See the Percy snapshot-failure classifications and configuration reference.
Work through the failure in evidence order
- Read the exact failure label. Distinguish a page-load timeout, network-idle timeout, blank/loading capture, and an element that appears after the snapshot. Use the corresponding row above rather than changing several settings at once.
- Verify Percy can access the URL. Confirm the tested URL is reachable from the capture environment, not merely from your local browser. For protected pages, configure the required cookies or basic authorization. A timeout setting cannot fix missing access.
- Inspect Percy’s network logs. Look for requests that are slow, failed, repeated, or left pending. Percy calls out SVG and video assets as possible causes of slow page discovery. For a network-idle failure, focus on requests that keep the page from becoming quiet, including third-party tracking or analytics requests. The timeout guide and failure guidance describe these checks.
- Wait for the state the test needs. If navigation succeeds but application rendering is asynchronous, wait for a stable completion element with
waitForSelector. UsewaitForTimeoutonly when a fixed delay is the practical readiness signal and its duration is understood. These controls address capture timing; they do not make an unreachable page reachable or settle a request that never finishes. Consult the documentation for your installed CLI or SDK: Percy CLI snapshot options and Percy core package. - Account for lazy-loaded content. If content is loaded only as it enters the viewport, bring it into view or scroll through the page before the snapshot. Percy’s troubleshooting guidance suggests scrolling to the bottom for lazy-loaded pages.
- Change only the setting that matches the evidence. For a page-load timeout, evaluate
PERCY_PAGE_LOAD_TIMEOUTand CI resources. For network-idle, inspect pending requests and the network-idle configuration. Avoid changing unrelated timeout settings without evidence. - Investigate blank or stuck-loading output. Percy’s troubleshooting page says that if a blank or loading capture occurs with
enable-javascript: true, tryenable-javascript: false. Check the syntax supported by the SDK in use, and make sure the application is ready before the snapshot call. - Rerun with debug output. Percy CLI debug mode can help inspect asset discovery. After each change, rerun the failing case and compare the failure label and network evidence; confirm that the change addressed the failing stage rather than merely shifting the symptom.
Tune page-load timeouts and CI resources carefully
For a genuine page-load timeout, Percy documents increasing PERCY_PAGE_LOAD_TIMEOUT; its example value is 60000. Apply the variable in the environment used to run the Percy CLI, then rerun the failing snapshot. Verify the accepted variable and behavior against your installed Percy version, because the documentation’s example is not a promise that every SDK or version uses the same configuration path.

If the page is genuinely slow under CI, evaluate whether the runner has enough resources and whether excessive parallel work is contributing. More CI capacity can address resource pressure, but it will not fix an invalid URL, missing credentials, or an asset request that never resolves. Increasing the timeout also lengthens the time spent waiting on a slow or hung page, so use network evidence to decide whether a specific asset or page behavior should instead be corrected.
Fix network-idle failures at the request level
A network-idle failure is about the absence of requests for the configured quiet period, not simply the overall page-load duration. Use Percy’s network logs to find recurring polls, trackers, analytics, streaming or otherwise long-lived requests. If a request is unnecessary for the visual state under test, consider an appropriate test or page-level change; if the setting itself is too short for the page’s legitimate behavior, review the relevant network-idle configuration in the Percy configuration reference.
Do not use a longer page-load timeout as a substitute for diagnosing requests that prevent network quiet. Likewise, a network-idle adjustment will not address a page Percy cannot load because the URL or authentication is wrong.

Choose readiness waits and DOM changes by scope
Prefer a semantic readiness condition
When the page has loaded but a meaningful component is rendered asynchronously, wait for that component with waitForSelector. A selector tied to the completed UI state is generally more stable than sleeping for an arbitrary duration. Use waitForTimeout only when no dependable state signal exists; a fixed wait can be too short on a slow run and unnecessarily long on a fast one. The available API and call syntax depend on the Percy package and version, so use its matching CLI documentation or core package documentation.

Transform the DOM only when omitting content is safe
If a specific asset blocks capture and is not needed in the visual comparison, Percy’s domTransformation can remove troublesome content from the rendered DOM. Keep the change narrow: removing content changes what the snapshot represents. It is not an appropriate workaround when the missing asset is part of the UI being validated. See Percy’s timeout guidance.
Troubleshoot common symptoms
| Symptom | Likely cause to check | Next action |
|---|---|---|
| Page remains loading and Percy reports a page timeout | Slow or unresolved assets, insufficient CI resources, or a page that is not completing load. | Review network logs; check SVG and video requests; evaluate CI capacity; then test the documented page-load timeout change. |
| “Page loading failed” | Percy cannot reach the URL or the page requires authentication. | Test access from the capture environment and configure required cookies or basic authorization. |
| Network-idle timeout despite visible content | Requests continue or remain pending after the needed UI is visible. | Identify the unsettled request and review network-idle configuration, rather than blindly raising page-load timeout. |
| Capture is blank or stuck when JavaScript is enabled | JavaScript behavior or application readiness may be involved. | Check the app’s readiness; if enable-javascript: true is set, try false using syntax supported by your SDK. |
| Late content is missing | Capture occurred before asynchronous or lazy-loaded content appeared. | Wait for a selector, use a justified delay, or scroll to trigger lazy loading before capture. |
| One asset repeatedly stalls discovery | A slow SVG, video, or other problematic resource may be holding up discovery. | Check the request evidence; if the asset is safe to omit from the snapshot, consider a narrow DOM transformation. |
| Timeout changes have no effect | The changed setting may target a different stage, or its syntax may not match the installed version. | Reclassify from the exact error and confirm the option or environment variable in the version-specific Percy docs. |

Frequently Asked Questions
Does increasing a Percy timeout guarantee the snapshot will succeed?
No. A longer timeout only gives the relevant stage more time; it cannot fix inaccessible pages, missing authentication, or requests that never settle.
Should I use a fixed wait or wait for a selector?
Use a selector tied to the completed UI when one is available. A fixed delay is a fallback when there is no reliable readiness signal.
