If PC speakers have no sound, first select them as Windows’ output device, then check volume, power, and connections. For static or crackling, test Windows audio enhancements and format settings one at a time. If audio is delayed, start by identifying whether the speakers connect by Bluetooth or cable—and whether the delay affects one app or all playback—because the right checks depend on those details.
PC speakers have no sound: check output and connections first
A speaker can be plugged in and powered on without being the output Windows is currently using. Check the selected output before changing drivers or other settings.

- Select the speakers: Open the sound output list from the taskbar sound icon and choose the actual speakers. Menu labels can vary by Windows version and device.
- Check volume and mute: Raise Windows system volume and the speaker’s physical volume control. Open Volume Mixer and check that the affected app is not muted or turned down.
- Check the physical connection: Confirm the speaker is powered on, reseat its cable, and make sure it is connected to the correct audio jack. Unplug headphones temporarily to check whether they are redirecting sound.
- If the speakers use USB: Try another USB port.
Microsoft’s Windows sound troubleshooting guide covers output selection and basic audio checks. Its guidance applies to Windows 10 and Windows 11; labels and settings can differ. Microsoft ended Windows 10 support on October 14, 2025.
If Windows still does not play sound
Try the following in order, testing sound after each change so you can tell what helped:

- Turn off audio enhancements for the selected output and test again. Microsoft notes that enhancements can sometimes cause audio issues.
- Run the Windows audio troubleshooter.
- Restart the PC.
- Update or reinstall the audio driver. If Windows’ general steps do not resolve the problem, get the driver from the PC or sound-card manufacturer for your exact model and Windows version.

If the speakers are missing from Sound settings
- Open Device Manager and expand Sound, video and game controllers.
- If the audio device is disabled, enable it. If necessary, show hidden devices and scan for hardware changes.
- If Windows still does not detect the output, install the latest driver for the exact PC or sound card from its manufacturer, then restart.
A missing output can be related to a driver that is missing, outdated, disabled, or loading incorrectly. Microsoft recommends getting the latest driver from the PC or sound-card maker; avoid unrelated driver-updater sites. See Microsoft’s missing-output troubleshooting steps.

PC speakers are making static, crackling, or distorted sound
“Static” describes what you hear, not a single confirmed cause. Microsoft lists audio enhancements, unsupported formats, driver problems, and stopped audio services among possible factors in distorted or crackling sound. Change one setting at a time and retest.
- Turn off enhancements: Disable audio enhancements for the speaker output, then play audio again.
- Try another default format: In the output device’s audio settings, select a different available default format and retest. The exact choices vary by device.
- Update or reinstall the driver: Use Windows’ driver troubleshooting steps, then check the PC or sound-card manufacturer’s support page for the exact model if needed.
- Restart audio services: Restart Windows Audio and Windows Audio Endpoint Builder, then test again.
Microsoft’s sound troubleshooting article says, “Sometimes having audio enhancements on can result in audio issues.” Its separate guidance covers distorted or crackling sound.

If the sound remains distorted, recheck speaker power, cable seating, and the selected jack. If practical, test the speaker with another audio source to help distinguish a speaker or connection issue from a Windows setting. Replace a detachable cable only if inspection shows it is damaged, and match the connector type to the speaker.

There is no single latency fix established for every PC speaker setup. First identify the connection type—Bluetooth, 3.5 mm analog, or USB—and whether the delay occurs in one application or across all playback. A delay limited to one app points to a different troubleshooting path than a delay heard everywhere, but the available guidance does not establish a universal cause for either case.

If the speakers connect by Bluetooth
These are Bluetooth connection and sound-quality checks, not guaranteed latency cures. Test after each step:

- Select the Bluetooth speakers as the Windows audio output.
- In the Bluetooth device’s audio format settings, try 2 channels, 16 bit, 48000 Hz, if that option is available.
- Remove the Bluetooth device from Windows and pair it again.
- Turn Bluetooth off and back on, then reconnect the speakers.
- Check for an updated Bluetooth driver and restart the PC.

The available Windows guidance does not establish a wired-audio, latency-specific procedure. Note whether the connection is USB or 3.5 mm, which Windows version you use, the speaker model, and the affected app; those details are needed before recommending more specific steps.
