How to Fix Opera Running Slow, Freezing, or Crashing

A practical, low-risk-to-high-impact guide to troubleshooting Opera performance problems, targeted graphics issues, recovery choices, and persistent crashes.

If Opera is slow, freezing, or crashing, start with reversible checks: restart it, install any available update, close tabs you do not need, and temporarily disable extensions. Clear browsing data selectively. Use recovery or a clean installation only after backing up your profile, because Opera’s reset options can delete different amounts of personal data.

Start with a restart and an update

Restarting Opera resolves many crashes, according to Opera’s crashes and issues guidance. If the problem remains, open the Opera menu and look for Update & Recovery. Install an available update, then relaunch the browser to complete it. Opera says it downloads updates automatically when one becomes available; the menu wording can vary by operating system.

Check tabs and extensions

Close tabs you are not using and see whether Opera becomes more responsive. Next, temporarily disable extensions, particularly ones you installed recently or rarely use. If performance improves, re-enable extensions one at a time and observe whether the issue returns; this can help isolate a cause without assuming in advance which extension is responsible.

Opera notes that some extensions can use substantial processing power and recommends keeping only those you use regularly. Its customization guidance explains the resource concern. Opera also lists removing unused extensions and closing tabs among its speed suggestions in the FAQ.

Clear only the browsing data you mean to remove

Opera includes clearing browsing data among its troubleshooting suggestions, but choose the data types and time range deliberately. Deleting cookies can sign you out of websites or remove saved site state; clearing cached files may mean pages need to download those files again. Avoid selecting everything by default if you only intend to remove a particular kind of data.

On Opera for iOS, the settings page says accumulated cookies and cached data may slow the browser and describes a Clear browsing data control. Desktop labels and available options can differ by release and platform.

For video or graphics trouble, test hardware acceleration

If the issue is specifically poor or blank video playback, check that your graphics drivers are current and test whether changing hardware acceleration affects that symptom. Opera’s FAQ gives the path Settings > Browser > System for enabling or disabling hardware acceleration; availability and labels may vary by platform or release. Compare the same playback task with acceleration on and off, changing one setting at a time.

This is a targeted diagnostic for video or graphics behavior, not an established general cure for every slow, freezing, or crashing browser session. Opera’s cited guidance does not promise a particular performance improvement.

Choose recovery based on what you can afford to reset

If the basic checks do not help, Opera’s recovery choices are under Update & Recovery > Recover. Back up important information before proceeding. The two choices differ significantly:

Recovery choice What it resets or removes Personal data retained Setup afterward
Keep my data and only reset Opera settings Resets settings and search engine, removes pinned tabs, disables extensions, and clears temporary data such as cookies. Bookmarks, history, and saved passwords remain. Review settings, restore pinned tabs if needed, and re-enable extensions selectively.
Reset my data and Opera Resets Opera and also removes extensions, bookmarks, history, and saved passwords. The listed bookmarks, history, and saved passwords are not retained. More setup is required; restore data only from a backup you trust.

Opera describes these options in its recovery instructions. If you are unsure which data is synchronized or backed up, verify that before choosing the full reset.

Back up before a clean installation

A clean installation is a higher-impact step. Opera’s procedure is to uninstall the browser, delete its profile data, download the latest version, and install it again. Deleting profile data can remove local browser information, so do not begin until you have backed up anything you need.

  1. Find the profile location: enter opera:about/ in Opera’s address bar and note the profile and data folder paths shown.
  2. Back up the profile files: copy the relevant files to a safe location before uninstalling or deleting profile data. Opera recommends making a backup in its clean-install guidance.
  3. Uninstall Opera and remove the profile data: follow the clean-install procedure for your operating system, taking care to delete only the intended profile folder.
  4. Download and install Opera again: use the current installer for your platform.
  5. Restore cautiously: if the clean installation works, return backed-up files selectively. If restoring a file brings the crash back, remove browsing data or isolate the problematic file rather than restoring everything at once.

Report crashes that continue

If Opera shows a crash dialog, submit a report and describe what you were doing immediately before the freeze or crash. For a persistent problem, Opera’s support guidance also discusses filing a bug report and attaching a compressed profile folder to help reproduce the issue.

A profile may contain sensitive information. Consider the privacy implications before attaching it. Opera says users can remove files, but removing a file needed to reproduce the problem may prevent the company from identifying the cause.
