Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFirst find where the picture stops moving: in the OBS preview, in the feed sent to YouTube, or only for some viewers. Each points to a different fault. If the OBS preview is frozen, check Media Source playback settings and the file or decoder. If OBS is moving but YouTube reports a poor feed, investigate rendering, encoding, and the network indicators before changing the media source.
Locate the freeze before changing settings
Compare the same moment in three places: the Media Source in OBS, OBS’s output and status indicators, and the YouTube Live Control Room preview and stream-health messages. If possible, ask whether the problem affects all viewers or only some.

- The source is frozen in OBS preview: Start with whether playback ended, whether the source is hidden or being reactivated, the media file or decoder, and OBS resource pressure.
- OBS preview moves, but YouTube’s feed is poor or missing: Check OBS network status and YouTube’s stream-health messages. Rendering or encoding overload may also affect the output.
- The YouTube preview looks healthy, but some viewers report buffering: Viewer devices and internet connections differ. OBS notes buffering can occur without OBS dropped frames, so a viewer-only report does not by itself prove the source or ingest connection is failing.
These comparisons help narrow the fault; they do not guarantee a diagnosis in every case. OBS and YouTube describe distinct playback, performance, ingest, and viewer-buffering behaviors in their Media Sources, Stream Connection Troubleshooting, Encoding Performance Troubleshooting, Stream Buffering Troubleshooting, and YouTube encoder settings guidance.
Check the Media Source playback properties
In OBS, open the Media Source’s properties and change one setting at a time. OBS’s documented descriptions and defaults below are from its Media Sources article, dated 2022-01-11; labels or layout may differ in your installed version.

- 【Package Content & Note】 1x HD Audio Capture Card , 1x USB 3.0 to USB C Adapter (A-side 3.0, B-side 2.0), 1x user manual. Please note that you need to restart the OBS Studio software after the audio setup is complete, otherwise it will result in no sound output. When using an adapter, if the device is recognized as USB 2.0, try using the other side with the USB-C port. Simply flip the capture card and reconnect it to be recognized as USB 3.0
- Loop: Turn this on if a single clip should repeat when it reaches the end. OBS documents the default as off. A clip that has ended can look like a freeze if you expected it to repeat.
- Restart playback when source becomes active: This controls whether the file restarts when the source is in the current scene and becomes visible. OBS documents the default as on. Check it if the source is expected to resume from its previous position rather than start over when shown.
- Use hardware decoding when available: Test with the option both enabled and disabled. It is off by default and uses GPU decoding only when the file type and available hardware support it. OBS does not promise that switching it will fix a freeze; treat it as a controlled compatibility check.
- Close file when inactive: This unloads the media file while the source is hidden or off-scene, freeing memory. OBS warns it can take a short time to appear again when shown. If freezing follows scene changes, temporarily disable this setting and see whether the behavior changes.
- Show nothing when playback ends: Check this if the source goes blank or appears stuck at the last frame after a clip completes. The setting hides the source at the end rather than leaving the final frame visible.
After each change, observe a full playback cycle or the scene transition that normally triggers the symptom. Changing several properties together makes it harder to identify which one mattered.
Test a different playback path only when appropriate
If the source is a playlist or needs extended media support, OBS documents VLC Video as an alternative source type. VLC must be installed, and 64-bit OBS requires 64-bit VLC. VLC Video has Loop Playlist enabled by default and configurable visibility behavior.
Switching to VLC Video changes the playback path and adds a software dependency; it is a test, not an assured repair. Change only after checking the current Media Source properties, and note the original configuration so you can revert if the symptom persists or worsens.

Distinguish rendering or encoding overload from media playback
A Media Source can appear frozen while OBS is under resource pressure, but reducing output quality is not a direct remedy for a file that has simply ended or is hidden. Look for OBS indicators or log evidence of rendering lag or encoding overload. If those point to performance, OBS recommends reducing competing GPU work and simplifying the scene.
- Remove unnecessary sources and filters, then check whether rendering or encoding indicators improve.
- Use lower-resolution media when the output does not need the media’s original resolution.
- If the computer cannot sustain the chosen output, consider reducing output resolution or frame rate. OBS suggests trying 30 fps if 60 fps is not working.
Make one reduction at a time and weigh the resource savings against the output change. If the source remains frozen in the OBS preview while the system is not showing performance trouble, return to playback and file/decoder checks instead.
Investigate network drops only when OBS points to ingest trouble
OBS defines dropped frames as a connection that is unstable or cannot sustain the configured bitrate; excessive drops can disconnect the stream. This is a problem in the OBS-to-YouTube connection, not evidence that a source file frozen inside OBS needs a network fix.

- Compare the configured bitrate with stable upload capacity and lower it if the connection cannot sustain it.
- Check whether a VPN, security software, or network-management software is interfering with the connection.
- Try wired networking if the connection is unstable; Wi-Fi can be less reliable.
- Dynamic bitrate can lower quality to reduce drops, but OBS describes it as a fallback rather than a fix for the underlying network problem.
Use OBS’s connection troubleshooting guidance when its network indicators support this branch. A stable connection is necessary for ingest, but it will not correct playback that has ended or a decoder issue in the local preview.

Validate YouTube encoder settings and preflight the stream
YouTube recommends testing with audio and movement representative of the planned stream before going live, then monitoring stream health and messages. Its published encoder guidance lists RTMP/RTMPS; H.264, H.265, and AV1; up to 60 fps; constant bitrate (CBR); and a recommended keyframe interval of 2 seconds, not over 4 seconds. Bitrate recommendations vary by codec, resolution, and frame rate, so use YouTube’s current table for the exact combination rather than applying one bitrate to every stream.
Choose a bitrate the connection can sustain consistently. YouTube says it transcodes live video into different output formats, but that does not remove the need for a stable, correctly configured feed. The published guidance does not prescribe a special 24/7 bitrate or a guaranteed preflight duration. Encoder recommendations can change; check YouTube’s current live encoder settings table when configuring the stream.

Make a controlled change and verify the result
- Record where the freeze appears and what OBS or YouTube reports at that time.
- Check whether the clip reached its end, then inspect Loop, restart-on-activation, hardware decoding, close-file behavior, and end-of-playback visibility.
- Reproduce the usual scene change or playback interval after changing one setting. If possible, use a representative test before relying on the change in a continuous broadcast.
- If OBS indicates rendering lag or encoding overload, simplify the scene or reduce the resource demand; if it indicates dropped frames, investigate bitrate and the network path.
- Monitor OBS status and YouTube stream health during the test. If the OBS preview is healthy but only certain viewers report buffering, compare their devices and connections rather than changing source settings without further evidence.
For a 24/7 stream, account for operational trade-offs: closing an inactive file can add a reload delay when it reappears; lowering resolution or frame rate changes the output; VLC Video adds a VLC dependency; and changing encoder or network settings may interrupt the broadcast.
