OBS’s “Encoding overloaded” warning usually means the computer cannot render or encode the current scene at its chosen settings; it is not the same as network dropped frames. Check OBS Stats and the session log first, then reduce scene and output workload before changing hardware. For an uninterrupted 24/7 coaching broadcast, also test recording, storage, power and connection over an extended period—fixing encoding overload alone does not guarantee continuous operation.
First identify what is failing
Open OBS’s Stats window while reproducing the problem, then save the log for that session. Note whether OBS reports encoding lag, rendering lag or dropped frames. Encoding/rendering problems point to local performance; dropped frames point to delivery between your computer and the ingest server. OBS says dropped frames are very unlikely to be caused by OBS itself and may relate to upload stability, routing, Wi-Fi, VPN or security software, or other network-path equipment. Before changing settings, record your operating system and OBS version, CPU and GPU, whether you stream and record simultaneously, the encoder selected for each output, canvas and output resolutions, frame rate, and which scenes, sources and filters are active. Note when the warning begins. Without this information, there is no defensible universal preset or hardware diagnosis for your coaching setup.

- Test a simple scene. Temporarily disable animated or browser overlays, heavy filters, high-resolution media or camera sources, and anything not needed for the coaching session. Some sources can continue using resources while hidden, and browser sources can be resource-intensive. If the simple scene performs better, restore components one at a time to find the load. OBS explains these steps in its encoding performance guide.
- Lower output resolution or frame rate. These reduce the pixels or frames OBS must process. If 60 fps is unstable, try 30 fps. Compare Stats and the resulting recording after each change; do not assume the machine can sustain a setting because it can display the preview.
- Check other GPU work. Close other GPU-intensive applications and retest. On Windows, try running OBS as administrator, as OBS recommends. Lowering the base canvas is more disruptive because sources may need repositioning; reserve it for cases where the system is starved for GPU resources.
- Change one or a small number of settings at a time. Keep a note of each test and compare the same scene and workload. This makes it easier to identify which change helped without sacrificing more picture quality than necessary.
Choose an encoder based on the bottleneck
Check which encoders OBS actually offers for your operating system and hardware. OBS documents NVIDIA NVENC, AMD AMF, Intel QSV and Apple VideoToolbox, with compatibility and generation caveats. Hardware encoding can move compression work away from the CPU, but it does not remove GPU work: OBS still uses the GPU to composite and render scenes. A hardware encoder therefore is not an automatic fix for GPU rendering lag. Older encoder generations may also deliver lower image quality at the same bitrate. Check the OBS hardware encoding guide and ensure drivers are appropriate for your platform.

OBS’s minimum system requirements establish compatibility, not guaranteed performance. The OBS Project states: “Having a compatible system does not guarantee that it is capable of streaming or recording using OBS Studio.” CPU demand varies with encoder, resolution, frame rate and scene complexity. The system requirements page and OBS Auto Configuration Wizard can help establish a starting point, but an extended test of your actual workload is still necessary.
If the symptom is dropped frames on YouTube Live
Use this branch only if your coaching stream is going to YouTube Live and OBS reports dropped frames rather than encoding or rendering lag. Test the connection separately from local encoding performance. Google recommends a speed test, a representative test stream with audio and movement, and monitoring stream health. Its current H.264 recommendations include 8 Mbps at 720p30 and 14 Mbps at 1080p30; these are video encoder bitrate settings, not required or guaranteed upload speeds. Check YouTube’s live encoder settings for the current table for your resolution and codec.

OBS gives 75% of total upload capacity as a general starting point for bitrate, not a guarantee of reliable delivery. Measure stable upload and leave headroom. If Wi-Fi is unstable, OBS recommends trying a wired connection. YouTube’s settings page also lists RTMP/RTMPS, H.264/H.265/AV1, CBR and a recommended two-second keyframe interval not exceeding four seconds. Follow the current platform guidance for the actual encoder and resolution rather than treating any one bitrate as universal.

A short successful test does not establish that a particular PC, connection, power supply or storage volume can run indefinitely. Run an extended test with representative coaching audio, movement, scenes and simultaneous recording if that is your intended setup. Check that the recording file is valid and that storage remains available; review the OBS log after an interruption. Add a UPS, redundant connection or more storage only when your actual power, network or capacity situation demonstrates that need. None is a direct documented cure for encoding overload.

India is not itself a diagnosis: the available OBS and YouTube guidance does not establish a country-wide Indian internet or power cause for encoding overload. If the problem appears to be delivery or continuity rather than encoding, assess your own ISP, wired or Wi-Fi setup, measured upload and power conditions.
