Crashes, No Sound, or Screen Glitches?
Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minutePC Slower Than It Used to Be?
A free scan shows the junk files, broken settings and background clutter dragging Windows down - then fixes them in one click.Free scan · Windows 10 & 11Start with OBS Stats: an “Encoding overloaded!” warning points to frames OBS cannot encode in time; it does not, by itself, mean your budget PC needs an upgrade. First distinguish encoding pressure from GPU rendering load and network drops, then reduce the work your existing PC has to do before changing hardware.
Identify which frames are being lost
OBS handles more than encoding: it also composites sources into a scene, while your connection carries the finished stream to the platform. These are different bottlenecks, so a bitrate change will not fix a saturated CPU encoder, and a new encoder setting will not fix an unstable connection.

- Encoding overload: OBS reports “Encoding overloaded!” or the encoding-lag counter rises. The encoder is missing frame deadlines. An OBS forum explanation describes the warning as appearing when more than 0.1% of frames are skipped; treat that figure as forum guidance, not wording from OBS’s official troubleshooting page. At 60 FPS, each frame has about 16.6667 milliseconds to be processed, as the same 2023 forum discussion explains. OBS Project forum discussion.
- Rendering lag: the rendering-lag counter rises, often when OBS cannot composite the scene in time because the game or other apps are using too much GPU capacity. A hardware encoder can reduce CPU work but does not remove this GPU load.
- Network drops: the network “Dropped frames” counter rises, often alongside a yellow or red connection indicator. OBS says this means the connection to the streaming service is unstable or cannot sustain the selected bitrate. Check the network counter and connection before lowering the encoder workload. OBS Help Portal.
Open View → Stats in OBS and note which counter increases while the problem occurs. Save a log from Help → Log Files after reproducing the issue; the log and the Stats window help distinguish a CPU limit, GPU contention, and network trouble.

After each change, run a short recording or test stream using the same game and scene. Change one setting at a time so you can tell what helped and avoid sacrificing quality unnecessarily.

- On Windows, run OBS as administrator. Close OBS, right-click its shortcut, and select Run as administrator. OBS recommends this as a quick troubleshooting step because it can ask Windows to reserve GPU capacity for OBS. It is not a guaranteed fix. OBS Encoding Performance Troubleshooting.
- Free up GPU capacity. Close GPU-heavy apps you do not need, reduce demanding in-game graphics settings, and cap the game’s frame rate. OBS suggests matching the cap to your monitor’s refresh rate or, if the problem remains, OBS’s target frame rate. Enabling V-Sync is another option. Uncapped game rendering can leave too little GPU capacity for OBS to composite its scene. OBS’s troubleshooting guide.
- Lower output resolution or frame rate. In OBS, open Settings → Video and reduce Output (Scaled) Resolution. If streaming at 60 FPS is unstable, try 30 FPS. Both resolution and frame rate affect the work OBS must do. Lowering them reduces detail or motion smoothness, so compare a short test at the new settings before committing.
- Simplify scenes and sources. Remove sources, filters, or high-resolution media you do not need. Use images and media sized appropriately for how they appear in the scene; sources can still consume resources even when their content is scaled down later. If Stats point to rendering pressure, simplify the demanding scene first. OBS’s troubleshooting guide.
- Try a hardware encoder already supported by your PC. If x264 is straining a modest CPU, test an installed hardware encoder: NVENC on supported NVIDIA hardware, AMF on supported AMD hardware, or QSV on compatible Intel graphics. OBS generally recommends hardware encoding for performance because it moves encoding work from the CPU to a specialised component. If your PC has a discrete NVIDIA or AMD GPU, OBS advises using the primary graphics adapter’s encoder. Install current drivers from the relevant hardware manufacturer; these encoders are not software plug-ins you can download for unsupported hardware. OBS Hardware Encoding.
- Recheck Stats and the log. If the warning persists, note the counters and share the OBS log through official community support for diagnosis. Do not buy a GPU, reinstall Windows, edit the registry, add third-party encoder DLLs, or buy a capture card based on the warning alone.
Choose an encoder that fits the bottleneck
Encoder choice depends on what your hardware supports and what the Stats counters show. Hardware encoding often frees CPU capacity, but if the GPU is already overloaded by the game or scene, moving encoding to that GPU may not solve the rendering bottleneck. Test the options actually available in your OBS installation rather than assuming a particular encoder will work on every PC.
| Encoder | When to test it | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| x264 | When you want to use CPU encoding and the CPU has capacity left. | If CPU encoding pressure is driving the warning, test a hardware encoder supported by your system. Quality at a given bitrate depends on settings and hardware. |
| NVENC | On supported NVIDIA hardware, particularly if x264 is saturating the CPU. | Use the current manufacturer driver and consider whether game load is already competing for GPU resources. |
| AMF | On supported AMD hardware. | Check driver status and GPU/rendering pressure; hardware encoding does not eliminate scene-compositing work. |
| QSV | On compatible Intel graphics. | Confirm the installed hardware and current drivers support it, then test against your actual stream workload. |
Hardware encoders can trade some image quality at a given bitrate, especially on older generations. Compare a short recording or test stream at the same resolution, frame rate, and bitrate; encoder labels alone do not establish which will look best on your PC.

Set resolution, frame rate, and bitrate for separate constraints
For an encoding or rendering bottleneck, reduce the PC’s workload by lowering output resolution or FPS. Bitrate primarily concerns the connection’s capacity and the platform’s current limits; reducing it is not a stand-alone fix for a CPU or GPU bottleneck.

It notes that fast-moving games are harder to compress and can look blocky at a given bitrate, making a lower resolution a reasonable trade-off. The guide gives 1280×720 at 60 FPS and 6,000 Kbps as an example for Fortnite; this is NVIDIA’s example, not a universal setting for Indian connections or every streaming platform. NVIDIA also bases its bitrate table on about 75% of measured upload speed as a planning rule of thumb to leave bandwidth for the game and other apps—not as an OBS requirement. Check your platform’s current requirements and measure your own connection before choosing a bitrate. NVIDIA NVENC OBS Guide.

When to consider spending money
There is no reliable rupee budget or universal replacement recommendation without your PC’s processor, graphics hardware, target resolution and FPS, game, platform, and OBS Stats or log. Work through the free checks first. Consider an upgrade only after the evidence identifies a specific limitation and you have confirmed which encoder or workload your existing hardware cannot handle. A capture card is relevant to a separate capture-PC workflow, not a general fix for a single-PC encoder warning.
Or let it run in the cloud
If your goal is to keep a prerecorded video playing as a 24/7 YouTube livestream, rather than stream gameplay from your PC, StreamNeo is a different option: upload your video or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key, and go live. It loops the uploaded videos from the cloud, so nothing has to stay on at home. Every slot streams your upload as made, up to 4K 60fps, at one flat price per slot; StreamNeo automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream. Check copyright and platform rules before going live
Whether you stream gameplay yourself or loop prerecorded material, confirm that you have the rights to the video, music, and other material you broadcast, and follow the current rules of your streaming platform. Reusing material without permission can create copyright problems; permission to use a track or clip should not be assumed simply because it is available online. Before launching a continuous stream, review the copyright safety checklist and the platform’s current live-stream requirements.
