First, check whether OBS is actually reporting dropped frames. If its dropped-frame counter is rising, focus on the connection between your computer and the streaming service’s ingest server, or on a bitrate your connection cannot sustain. If the counter stays clear, the cause may instead be rendering or encoding strain—or buffering on viewers’ devices. Those symptoms need different fixes.
For a 24/7 kirtan stream, work through the checks below in order, then run a monitored test before relying on the setup continuously. There is no single bitrate or OBS setting that guarantees an uninterrupted broadcast: the right settings depend on your platform, network, computer, and stream content.

1. Confirm what kind of frames are being lost
During a representative stream attempt, check OBS’s dropped-frame counter and inspect the log afterward. OBS’s official Stream Connection Troubleshooting guide, dated September 30, 2024, explains that network dropped frames point to an unstable connection to the remote server or a bitrate the connection cannot sustain. OBS may drop frames to compensate; too many can disconnect the stream.

OBS says, “It is extremely unlikely for OBS Studio to cause dropped frames,” in the context of network drops. That does not rule out a separate rendering or encoding performance problem, which OBS addresses in its performance guide. Nor does a clean OBS counter rule out buffering for viewers: their devices and internet connections differ.

- Rendering or encoding lag appears in OBS: reduce the workload as described in section 3.
- OBS reports no drops, but viewers buffer: check viewer-side conditions and the platform’s guidance, as described in section 4.
2. Fix network-related dropped frames
Change one thing at a time and compare the counter and log during a similar stream attempt. This helps identify the cause instead of masking it with several simultaneous changes.
Try another ingest server
In OBS, open Settings → Stream and try a different ingest server if your streaming service offers a server selection. A server change can help reveal whether the chosen route or server is part of the problem; it cannot guarantee a stable connection.
Lower the video bitrate to fit stable upload
In Settings → Output, reduce the video bitrate and test again. Base it on your stable upload speed, not just the upload speed advertised in your internet plan, and stay within the streaming service’s current limits. OBS calls 75% of total upload speed a “good starting point”; treat that as a rule of thumb, not a guaranteed safe rate for every network or service. Leave room for normal upload variation and other traffic on the connection.

A lower bitrate can improve stability when the connection cannot sustain the previous setting, but it reduces the data available for picture quality. If the stream remains unstable at a bitrate suitable for your content, investigate the network path rather than continuing to lower it without checking the cause.
Test the connection path
- If you are on Wi-Fi, test Ethernet. OBS recommends a wired connection for streaming because Wi-Fi can be unstable. Ethernet will not resolve congestion or faults farther along the route to the ingest server.
- Check competing traffic. Other devices or applications using the connection can leave less stable upload capacity for OBS. Test with unnecessary traffic paused.
- Check VPNs and security software. They can interfere with a stream connection. If you temporarily disable protection for diagnosis, restore it afterward; do not leave security software disabled as a fix.
- Review network-prioritization utilities. Bundled “optimization” tools may deprioritize OBS traffic. Check their settings rather than assuming they improve streaming.
- Inspect the physical and local network. Check the modem, router, cables, network adapter, switches, and extenders between the computer and router. Update network drivers where appropriate.
- Compare services only as a diagnostic. OBS suggests trying another streaming service to help determine whether the issue may be service-related. That comparison does not repair an unstable connection to the original service.
Windows-only options to test cautiously
OBS lists Network Optimizations and TCP pacing as options some Windows users report helping. Treat them as experiments, not assured fixes. OBS also advises leaving Bind to IP at Default; if needed, try IPv4 Only, then return to the IPv4/IPv6 default if it makes no difference. These options are not general fixes for every operating system or network.
OBS’s Dynamically change bitrate to manage congestion (Beta) option can lower bitrate when the connection cannot keep up. It may reduce drops, but OBS cautions that it does not fix the root cause and lowers video quality while active. Use it as a mitigation, not a substitute for stable connectivity.

When local checks do not resolve it
If the counter still rises after you have tested a suitable bitrate, another ingest server, and the local network path, contact your internet service provider. Keep notes on the times of the drops, the OBS log, the server tested, and whether Ethernet changed the result; those details can help narrow down the problem.

If OBS indicates rendering or encoding lag rather than network drops, lowering bitrate alone may not address the cause. OBS uses GPU resources to composite and render scenes. Its performance troubleshooting guide recommends reducing output resolution, lowering frame rate—for example, from 60 to 30 if 60 is not working—and simplifying scenes.
- Reduce output resolution or frame rate and test whether the performance warning clears.
- Simplify the scene; remove sources you do not need for the kirtan broadcast.
- Reduce filters and browser sources where possible.
- Close other GPU-heavy programs while OBS is running.
- On Windows, running OBS as administrator may help with GPU overload in some cases.
These steps target rendering and encoding workload. If OBS’s network dropped-frame counter is rising, work through the network checks as well.

4. Distinguish creator-side drops from viewer buffering
Viewers can buffer even when OBS reports no dropped frames, because their devices and internet connections vary. Check the OBS counter before changing encoder or network settings. If OBS shows no drops, ask affected viewers whether the problem occurs on another device or connection, and consult the streaming platform’s current playback recommendations.
If buffering affects a broad audience, lowering bitrate or output quality may improve access for viewers with slower connections, but it is a quality trade-off. Choose settings for the audience and platform rather than treating every playback complaint as proof that OBS is dropping frames.

OBS’s overview guide recommends testing before going live and describes configuring Automatic Reconnect. Reconnect behavior is a recovery measure, not an uptime guarantee. A 24/7 broadcast can still be interrupted by the computer, power, ISP, network equipment, or streaming platform; the cited OBS guides do not establish a 24/7 reliability design or guarantee continuous availability.

- Run a monitored test with the intended scenes, audio, bitrate, and ingest server before starting the continuous broadcast.
- Confirm Automatic Reconnect is configured and understand how you will restart OBS or the stream if reconnect does not restore it.
- Where practical, use a stable wired connection and keep a record of logs and interruptions.
- Check the chosen platform’s current bitrate, resolution, and keyframe requirements. Do not assume one platform’s settings apply to another.
For streams using platform transcoding, OBS’s transcoding guide says that a consistent keyframe interval within the platform’s recommendation helps quality options transition smoothly, and that YouTube transcodes all streams. Follow the current recommendation for your platform rather than relying on a universal keyframe or bitrate value.
