What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Start by checking which OBS counter is increasing: network Dropped Frames points to the connection or configured bitrate; Rendering Lag or Encoding Lag points to local GPU or encoding load. These are different faults, so do not lower quality or replace equipment until the OBS stats identify the branch. If viewers report buffering while OBS shows no dropped frames, troubleshoot playback and bitrate compatibility separately.
Identify what OBS means by “dropping frames”
Open OBS’s Stats window while the stream is running and watch the counters as the problem occurs. The exact labels and available details can vary with OBS version. Record the platform, operating system, OBS version, output resolution and frame rate, configured bitrate, and which counter rises; those details are needed before recommending exact settings for a continuous stream.

| What you observe | Likely branch | What to investigate |
|---|---|---|
| Dropped Frames (Network) rises | Connection between the streaming computer and the platform’s remote ingest server, or a bitrate the connection cannot sustain | Wired connection, network interference, OBS network options, bitrate stability |
| Rendering Lag or Encoding Lag rises | OBS cannot render or encode fast enough, often because of GPU workload or scene complexity | GPU load, scene sources and filters, output resolution and frame rate |
| OBS counters remain stable, but viewers report buffering | Viewer playback, network or device differences, or a bitrate that is difficult for some viewers | Platform bitrate guidance, audience reach and whether the platform offers transcoding |
OBS describes connection-related dropped frames as a network issue between the computer and the remote stream ingest server, or a configured bitrate the connection cannot keep up with. Too many dropped frames can disconnect the stream. Rendering and encoding overload are separate problems; use the counter that is actually changing rather than treating every choppy stream as a network fault. See OBS’s stream connection troubleshooting guide and encoding performance guidance.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsIf the network dropped-frames counter is rising
Test the connection before changing stream quality
- Use Ethernet if possible. OBS recommends a wired connection for streaming stability. If the computer is on Wi-Fi, connect it to the router with Ethernet and observe whether the dropped-frames counter still rises. A cable is a diagnostic step, not a guarantee that every network fault is fixed.
- Check whether other network activity coincides with the drops. Uploads, backups, downloads, or other users’ heavy traffic can compete with a live stream. Pause nonessential traffic during a test and compare the OBS counter.
- Review the configured bitrate against the connection you can sustain. A connection may have adequate download speed but inadequate or inconsistent upload capacity. If reducing bitrate makes drops less frequent, that indicates the connection may not reliably sustain the original setting; it does not prove the underlying fault is repaired. Make a controlled change and check both stability and the resulting image quality.
Check software and drivers that can interfere
OBS lists VPNs, security software, bundled network-management software, and outdated network drivers among possible causes of connection trouble. Temporarily test without a VPN if your security needs and network policy allow it. Review firewall or security-software rules for OBS rather than disabling protection indefinitely. Check for network-driver updates from the computer or network-adapter manufacturer, and test network-management utilities one at a time so you can identify whether a change matters.

Use OBS network options as diagnostics
In OBS, open Settings > Advanced > Network. OBS documents options including network optimizations, TCP pacing, Bind to IP, IP family selection, and Dynamic Bitrate. Availability and labels can depend on the operating system and OBS version. Start from the existing defaults, change one relevant option at a time, and test; these options are not guaranteed fixes. Bind to IP is normally left at its default unless you have a specific interface-selection problem.
Dynamic Bitrate can lower the streaming bitrate when congestion occurs, which may reduce dropped frames temporarily. OBS warns that this does not solve the root cause and reduces video quality. Treat it as a fallback when you cannot resolve the connection issue, not as proof that the network is healthy or as a substitute for checking the connection. OBS explains the limitation in its connection troubleshooting guide.

Isolate faulty hardware or escalate
A modem, router, network cable, network card, or another network device may be faulty. OBS recommends testing or replacing a suspected component to confirm the fault. Swap one item at a time where practical; do not buy a router or cable just because frames are dropping. If the issue persists on a stable wired connection after software and local network checks, contact your internet service provider and share the times of the interruptions and the OBS stats or logs.

OBS uses GPU resources to compose and render scenes, and complex scenes can add load. For a 24/7 animation stream, inspect the actual scene collection: media and browser sources, animated overlays, filters, and other effects may contribute, but the title alone does not establish which sources you use.

- On Windows, try running OBS as administrator when the evidence points to GPU rendering overload. OBS recommends this in applicable GPU-overload cases; it is not a remedy for network drops.
- Reduce competing GPU work. Close or limit games, video editors, browser tabs, and other applications that are using the GPU, then check the lag counters again.
- Simplify the scene that is active. Disable unnecessary sources and filters for a controlled test. If browser sources or expensive effects are present, reduce or remove them temporarily and compare the counters.
- Reduce output demands only if the counters support it. Lowering output resolution or frame rate can ease rendering or encoding workload but changes the stream’s quality or motion. OBS suggests trying 30 fps if 60 fps is not working; that is a troubleshooting example, not a universal preset. Make one change at a time and verify the result.
Use OBS’s encoding performance troubleshooting guide for its full workload-reduction guidance. Avoid changing resolution, frame rate, bitrate, and scene design all at once: you will not know which change addressed the measured bottleneck.
If viewers report buffering but OBS shows no drops
Viewer buffering does not necessarily mean the broadcaster is dropping frames. Viewers connect from different locations and use different devices and internet connections. OBS advises considering the stream bitrate and the platform’s recommendations; a bitrate that works for the broadcaster may still be difficult for part of the audience. Reducing bitrate may help compatibility, but may require a trade-off in resolution, image quality, or frame rate.

Whether the streaming platform provides transcoding—alternate playback qualities for viewers—is relevant to audience reach, but the platform is not specified here. Check that platform’s current live-stream recommendations and playback options before changing OBS output. OBS distinguishes this case in its stream buffering troubleshooting guide.

When a problem recurs, note its time and duration and capture the OBS Stats window and relevant logs. Record whether the stream disconnected, whether network dropped frames or rendering/encoding lag increased, and whether viewers reported buffering despite stable OBS counters. These observations help distinguish a recurring connection issue from scene load or audience playback trouble.
