How to Fix OBS Audio Clipping in a 24/7 Fireplace Live Stream

Find the first stage where fireplace audio distorts, correct its gain, then use OBS filters only for peaks that remain and verify with a recording.
Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

To stop clipping in an OBS fireplace stream, find the first point in the audio chain where the crackle or distortion appears and lower the level there. Check the source and device gain before changing OBS filters; a compressor can reduce peaks, and a limiter at the end of the filter chain can catch remaining peaks. Neither can repair audio that was already distorted upstream.

Find which audio source is clipping

In OBS, identify the mixer channel carrying the fireplace sound. It may be a microphone or other live device, a media source, desktop or application audio, or audio routed through external hardware. Adjust only the channel carrying the problem sound.

The right first check depends on the source. For a microphone or other live input, check the device and any interface or mixer. For a media source, listen to the file or playback application before OBS. If the source is already distorted there, changing an OBS filter will not restore clean audio.

Listen and meter before changing settings

Play representative audio, including both quiet ambience and loud crackles. Listen at the source or device monitor if available, then monitor the audio OBS receives. OBS’s Audio Mixer Guide explains mixer sources, monitoring, and peak hold, which can help reveal recent loud peaks.

  • If the sound is distorted before it reaches OBS, lower the source’s playback or input level, or inspect the recording or hardware path.
  • If it sounds clean upstream but distorted at a later point, investigate the gain or processing at that stage.
  • If the OBS meter reaches the digital ceiling, reduce the level before the final output. OBS identifies 0 dBFS as the digital maximum; audio above it in the final recording or stream clips. Internal floating-point processing does not make an over-maximum final output safe. See OBS’s Audio Mixer Technical Details.

Fix the earliest overloaded stage you can identify. A downstream fader or limiter cannot make a clipped source clean again.

Lower gain in stages

  1. Check hardware controls. If you use a microphone, interface, mixer, or other device with a gain control, check its physical level first. Device behavior varies; consult the manufacturer’s documentation or software where needed.
  2. Check operating-system and application levels. Confirm that the device level and the playback application or media-source level are not set excessively high.
  3. Adjust the OBS fader. Once upstream levels are reasonable, lower the relevant OBS mixer fader if you still need to balance the source. Make small changes and listen again.
  4. Recheck each point. After each change, listen at the next available monitor point and watch the OBS meter and peak indicator. This helps distinguish an overloaded source from a later-stage problem.

There is no single suitable peak target for every fireplace recording. OBS’s technical guide discusses -9 dBFS as a permitted-maximum-level reference in its meter discussion; that is not a fireplace-specific target or a destination-platform rule. Keep peaks below the digital ceiling and judge the sound with monitoring and a recording.

Use filters for the problem they solve

Open the affected source’s filters in OBS and add processing only if listening and metering show a reason. OBS’s Filters Guide lists audio filter types; the Compressor Filter and Limiter Filter pages describe their controls and documented defaults.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
Filter What it does How to use it here
Compressor Reduces levels above its threshold; OBS says it is typically placed near the beginning of a filter chain. Consider it when occasional louder crackles rise much higher than the ambience. Listen for changes to the fire’s natural dynamics rather than copying defaults blindly.
Limiter Prevents a signal from exceeding its threshold; OBS says it should be the last filter in the chain. Use it as a final peak-safety stage after correcting excessive upstream gain. It cannot undo distortion already present in the source or earlier stages.
Gain Raises or lowers a signal. Use only after diagnosis. Adding gain can make clipping worse.
Noise suppression or noise gate Processes or reduces quieter sounds. These are not clipping fixes. They can damage or chop off quiet fire ambience, so avoid them unless there is a specific need and careful listening confirms the result.

OBS documents compressor defaults of a 10:1 ratio, -18 dB threshold, 6 ms attack, 60 ms release, and 0 dB output gain. Its limiter defaults are a -6 dB threshold and 60 ms release. These are filter defaults, not recommended fireplace settings or guaranteed fixes. Set controls for the actual source and monitor the result.

Verify the stream audio before leaving it running

  1. Run a representative segment long enough to include quiet ambience, loud crackles, and any transitions in the source.
  2. Record it in OBS and listen back. A live monitor alone may not reveal how the final recording sounds; OBS recommends recording a normal session and reviewing it.
  3. Check left and right channels if the fireplace audio is stereo.
  4. Confirm that audio monitoring is not routed back into the stream, which can create a feedback loop.
  5. For a 24/7 stream, observe the source over enough time to encounter its natural peaks before treating the setup as verified. No fixed monitoring interval or unattended-stream audio target is established by the cited OBS guidance.

Common causes and fixes

  • The source file or device already crackles: Lower its playback or input level and inspect the recording or hardware path. OBS processing cannot restore audio that was already clipped.
  • The source sounds clean, but OBS output distorts: Check levels between the source and final output, including operating-system, application, and OBS levels. Reduce the earliest excessive level you find.
  • Brief crackles clip while the rest sounds fine: Monitor and record the loudest moments. A compressor may reduce peaks; a last-in-chain limiter can catch remaining peaks, but neither replaces correcting upstream overload.
  • The fire ambience becomes thin, chopped, or unnatural: Review any noise suppression or gate and remove it if it is cutting off quiet detail without solving a real problem.
  • The recording sounds different from the monitored signal: Listen to the recording itself and check the routing and filters applied to the recorded or streamed signal.
  • Hardware gain is unclear or inaccessible: Check the device manual or its vendor software; OBS notes that device controls and behavior differ.
