First identify which sign-in flow is failing: logging into ChatGPT, using ChatGPT to sign in to another site, or connecting a provider account through a ChatGPT workspace app. Each flow has a different callback owner and configuration. A redirect URI mismatch is not a universal ChatGPT login problem, and there is no single callback URL that applies to every setup.
Identify the failing sign-in flow
Choose the matching case before changing settings:
- Signing into ChatGPT: You are trying to access your ChatGPT account. Start with the account, browser, network, or managed-SSO checks below.
- Signing into an external website with ChatGPT: The website developer owns the callback endpoint and must process the authorization response. OpenAI documents this integration using Authorization Code with PKCE and OpenID Connect. See OpenAI Developers: On your website – Sign in with ChatGPT.
- Connecting a provider account through a ChatGPT workspace app template: The template displays a callback URL that the workspace administrator registers with the external provider. See OpenAI Help Center: ChatGPT app templates.
Sign in with ChatGPT provides identity information—name, email, and profile picture if present—to a supported external application. Access to additional data or actions is a separate authorization question and may require a distinct flow or administrator approval. See OpenAI Help Center: Sign in with ChatGPT.

Fix a developer-owned redirect or callback
Match the registered redirect URI exactly
Compare the URI in the actual authorization request with the callback registered for that client and environment. Check the scheme (https or http), hostname, path, and any callback identifier. For example, /callback and /auth/callback are different paths. Use the same redirect URI again when exchanging the authorization code; do not substitute a value from another environment or attempt.

OpenAI’s documented loopback sign-in flow uses 127.0.0.1; localhost is not interchangeable in that flow. A later attempt may use another available port, but the exact URI selected—including its port—must remain consistent throughout that attempt. Start the local callback listener before opening the browser. Follow the flow-specific instructions in OpenAI Developers: Registration and sign-in – Sign in with ChatGPT.

- FAST & CONVENIENT LOGIN: Plug in your Security Key C NFC via USB-C and tap it, or tap it against your phone (NFC) to authenticate. No batteries, no internet connection, and no extra fees required.
- TRUSTED PASSKEY TECHNOLOGY: Uses the latest passkey standards (FIDO2/WebAuthn & FIDO U2F) but does not support One-Time Passwords. For complex needs, check out the YubiKey 5 Series.
- BUILT TO LAST: Made from tough, waterproof, and crush-resistant materials. Manufactured in Sweden and programmed in the USA with the highest security standards.
Keep state and PKCE values tied to one attempt
Generate fresh state and PKCE values for every authorization attempt and retain them with that attempt’s redirect URI and verifier. When the browser returns, validate the state against the pending transaction before accepting the response. If the returned state is missing, expired, reused, or different, stop and restart sign-in rather than processing an unverified callback.
Check the response for an OAuth error before attempting code exchange. If the user denied authorization, do not try to redeem an authorization code. When a code is present, use the original redirect URI and the matching PKCE verifier for that transaction. The OAuth framework’s authorization response behavior is described in RFC 6749.

- POWERFUL SECURITY KEY: The YubiKey 5C NFC is the most versatile physical passkey, protecting your digital life from phishing attacks. It ensures only you can access your accounts
- WORKS WITH 1000+ ACCOUNTS: Compatible with popular accounts like Google, Microsoft, and Apple. A single YubiKey 5C NFC secures 100+ of your favorite accounts, including email, password managers, and more
- FAST & CONVENIENT LOGIN: Plug in your YubiKey 5C NFC via USB and tap it, or tap it against your phone (NFC), to authenticate. No batteries, no internet connection, and no extra fees required
- MOST SECURE PASSKEY: Supports FIDO2/WebAuthn, FIDO U2F, Yubico OTP, OATH-TOTP/HOTP, Smart card (PIV), and OpenPGP. That means it’s versatile, working almost anywhere you need it
- PRIMARY & SPARE KEYS: Just like having a spare house key, we recommend buying two YubiKeys - one for daily use and one as a spare. That way you’ll never get locked out of your accounts
Compare the whole request-to-token path
For a Redirect URI mismatch, compare the actual authorization request, registered client configuration, callback request, and token exchange rather than editing values at random. Also confirm the client ID and any required client configuration. Keep confidential client secrets on the backend, and do not expose secrets or authorization codes in public logs, support posts, or browser-facing error messages.
OpenAI’s website integration guidance says: “Clear temporary browser state on success and failure, and show an actionable sign-in error without exposing credentials.” — OpenAI Developers, On your website – Sign in with ChatGPT.

Fix a ChatGPT workspace app-template callback
- In ChatGPT, open Workspace settings and go to the relevant app-template configuration.
- Copy the callback URL displayed for that provider setup exactly as shown.
- Open the external provider’s OAuth application settings and add that value to its redirect URI or callback allowlist. Do not guess a generic ChatGPT callback URL.
- Check that the provider app is published and enabled in the workspace, the user is in the intended workspace and has the required role, and provider-side permissions allow the requested action.
- Verify the provider or tenant hostname, OAuth client ID, client secret, and requested scopes. Keep the secret private.
OpenAI Help Center’s troubleshooting guidance identifies the key check this way: “The callback URL was copied exactly into the provider configuration.” — ChatGPT app templates.
If connection or callback succeeds but a later data request or action fails, investigate scopes, provider permissions, app installation, and workspace access. Changing the callback repeatedly will not grant authorization the connected account does not have.

Recover when you cannot sign into ChatGPT
An ordinary ChatGPT account-login failure does not by itself indicate a redirect URI problem. Try the checks that match the error:
- “Wrong authentication method” or account confusion: Sign in using the identity method associated with the account, and confirm you have selected the intended account.
- “Something went wrong” or a browser loop: Try a private window or clean browser profile. Check whether cookie restrictions, privacy or script-blocking extensions, or stale browser session data are interfering.
- Network-related failure: Check whether a VPN, proxy, firewall, or other network filter is blocking sign-in. If the issue appears service-wide, check OpenAI’s status page and use the current support route in the Help Center’s Why can’t I log in to ChatGPT? guidance.
- Managed organization or SSO account: Confirm the intended tenant and product, the identity provider’s email claim and user assignment, workspace invitation or membership, and the organization’s sign-in policy. An identity-provider account that does not match workspace membership will not be fixed by repeating a generic sign-in attempt.
For invalid_state during SSO, retry in a new private session. If it persists, ask the administrator to verify identity-provider assignment and workspace membership or synchronization using OpenAI’s Troubleshooting SSO, workspace access, and domain verification guidance.

Use the error stage to choose the next check
| Where it fails | Most relevant checks |
|---|---|
| Before returning to the app | Account or identity method, provider permissions, workspace access, SSO assignment, or authorization denial. |
