If your NVIDIA SHIELD TV remote will not respond or SHIELD cannot get online, start with the low-risk checks: confirm the remote has power, retry pairing using the method for your remote generation, and check whether SHIELD is connected by Ethernet. Use a phone as a temporary remote only if it can join the same network as SHIELD. Save a factory reset for last because it erases device data and settings.
Fix a SHIELD remote that will not respond or connect
First identify which remote you have. NVIDIA has offered different SHIELD Remote variants, and their power and pairing steps are not interchangeable. The replaceable-battery model uses two CR2032 cells. A distinct rechargeable model with a headphone jack has no replaceable batteries and no IR transmitter. If the remote still connects, its battery state is shown under SHIELD accessories. See NVIDIA’s SHIELD Remote guide.

Check power before troubleshooting pairing
- For the replaceable-cell remote, check that both CR2032 batteries are installed correctly and have charge.
- For the rechargeable headphone-jack remote, charge it rather than looking for replaceable batteries.
- If the remote has power but will not control SHIELD, continue with pairing.
Pair the remote again
Pairing instructions can vary by SHIELD and remote generation. Follow the on-screen menu when its labels differ from these manufacturer instructions.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
- On SHIELD, hold the NVIDIA button for three seconds to enter connection mode, or open Settings > SHIELD accessories > Connect an accessory.
- Press Select on the remote. NVIDIA’s newer pairing instructions say to hold Select until the remote’s light flashes.
- If the remote was previously paired with another SHIELD, try holding Back and Home together for three seconds. NVIDIA’s newer instructions describe holding Home and Back for a previously paired remote.
- Wait for pairing to complete. NVIDIA says the voice-search button stops flashing when the connection succeeds.

If pairing still fails
- Charge the remote if it is rechargeable, then restart SHIELD and retry pairing.
- If the remote remains listed but will not connect, open Settings > SHIELD accessories > Forget all accessories and confirm with OK. Then repeat pairing. This removes paired accessories, so you may need to reconnect them.
- If these steps do not work, contact NVIDIA support before buying a replacement. If the remote is damaged or must be replaced, check that the replacement matches your SHIELD generation and remote variant.
Fix a SHIELD TV that will not connect to Wi-Fi
Start by checking whether SHIELD is connected to the router with Ethernet. NVIDIA says an Ethernet connection automatically disables Wi-Fi, so a missing Wi-Fi connection while SHIELD is wired does not by itself indicate a wireless fault.
The Wi-Fi network appears, but SHIELD will not join
- Check that the password is correct.
- Restart SHIELD and try again.
- Check whether other devices can connect to the same network. If they also have trouble, the issue may be with the router or network; NVIDIA recommends checking router firmware when the router has general connection problems.
- On a business, hotel, or school network, ask the administrator whether SHIELD is allowed to connect.
The Wi-Fi network does not appear
Check whether the network name (SSID) is hidden. If it is, add it manually through Network Settings > Wi-Fi > Add new network, entering the network name and required security details. Menu wording can vary by SHIELD software version. NVIDIA’s troubleshooting steps are in Troubleshooting SHIELD.

Fix a SHIELD TV that will not connect to Ethernet
Check the physical connection from SHIELD to the router or wall port: confirm the cable is seated at both ends and inspect SHIELD’s network status for the Ethernet icon. If the icon does not appear, verify the cable path and the port you are using. The available symptoms alone do not identify a particular cable or router fault, so avoid replacing equipment until you have checked the connection and whether the port provides network access.
When Ethernet is connected, SHIELD automatically disables Wi-Fi. If you want to use wireless instead, disconnect Ethernet and check the Wi-Fi connection again.

Use a phone or TV remote as a temporary control
NVIDIA SHIELD TV app
The SHIELD TV app can provide controls such as D-pad navigation, Select, Back, and Home. It is useful when the physical remote is unavailable, but the phone must be able to reach SHIELD on the same network.
- Connect the phone to the same network as SHIELD.
- Open the SHIELD TV app and select the SHIELD it discovers.
- Enter the six-digit code displayed on the TV to complete setup.
See NVIDIA’s SHIELD TV Remote App instructions. If SHIELD is offline or the phone cannot reach its network, the app may not be a usable workaround.

A factory reset is not a first-line fix for a remote-only problem. NVIDIA warns that resetting SHIELD erases personal device data and settings, and you will need to reinstall apps and games. Its reset guide estimates 50–70 minutes for a SHIELD reset and up to two hours for a SHIELD Pro reset.
