1. Turn on Game Filters and Photo Mode
NVIDIA’s release notes state that Game Filter defaults to off and can be enabled at Settings > Features > Overlay > Game Filters and Photo Mode. Open NVIDIA App, follow that path, and turn the feature on. Then return to the game and check whether its filter controls are available.
- Open NVIDIA App.
- Select Settings, then Features, then Overlay.
- Enable Game Filters and Photo Mode.
- Reopen or retest the game and check the overlay’s filter controls.
This is the first check when the overlay opens but filters are missing. It is not proof that the setting is the cause in every case: if it was already enabled, or enabling it changes nothing, continue to compatibility and version checks. NVIDIA documents the default and setting path in its NVIDIA App release highlights.
Pay attention to which part of the behavior changes. If the controls appear after enabling the setting, the disabled default likely explains why they were missing. If the overlay still opens but the controls remain unavailable, do not keep toggling the same option as though it guarantees support in every game. Move on to checking that game’s specific feature support. If the overlay itself remains unavailable, treat that as an overlay problem rather than assuming the filter toggle is the only relevant setting.
The setting is labeled for both Game Filters and Photo Mode, but those names do not mean that every game offers identical tools in both areas. Enabling the option makes the feature available where supported; it does not establish that a particular title supports every filter or Photo Mode function. 2. Check support for the exact game and feature
Support is not one all-or-nothing property. NVIDIA’s supported games page distinguishes feature support, including select Photo Mode-ready games and support for custom ReShade filters. A game may support some Photo Mode functions—such as screenshots, filters, and AI super resolution—without supporting every additional Photo Mode feature. Likewise, a game appearing in a general supported-games listing does not mean every filter works in it.
- Look up the exact game on NVIDIA’s supported-games page.
- Check the entry for the feature you need, rather than relying only on the game’s presence in the list.
- If you are trying to use a custom ReShade filter, look specifically for that support; do not assume it follows from ordinary filter or Photo Mode support.
The distinction helps narrow the symptom. If a filter control is unavailable only in one game, investigate that game’s listed feature support. If the overlay itself fails across games, a single game’s support listing is less likely to answer the broader overlay question.
Be precise about what you are checking. “Does this game support NVIDIA App?” is broader than the practical question, which might be “Does this game support the filter I want?”, “Does it support a Photo Mode feature?”, or “Does it allow custom ReShade filters?” The supported-games page separates some of these capabilities. A positive answer for one does not automatically answer the others.

NVIDIA notes that select Photo Mode-ready games may provide screenshots, filters, and AI super resolution while leaving additional Photo Mode features unavailable. So a partial set of controls can be consistent with the feature boundaries for that title; it does not necessarily mean the entire overlay has failed. Conversely, if the feature you are looking for is not listed for the game, repeatedly changing the global toggle is unlikely to establish that the unsupported feature is available.
The supported-games page is dynamic and may require JavaScript to display its full contents. If its list does not render as expected, avoid treating an incomplete view as definitive proof that a game or feature is unsupported. Check the page itself in a browser that can display it, and compare the specific game and capability rather than relying on a general search result or a broad game count.
3. Update NVIDIA App and the graphics driver
After checking the toggle and game compatibility, bring NVIDIA App and the graphics driver up to date, then retest. NVIDIA presents the App as a way to keep drivers current and publishes release highlights that include fixes for earlier overlay and filter problems. Updating is a reasonable compatibility check; it is not a guaranteed repair for every failure.
Use NVIDIA App’s available update flow to check the app and driver versions installed on your PC. The source material does not establish a single menu path for all update screens or every cause of an overlay failure, so do not treat one particular update control as a universal fix. After an update, retest the same game and the same feature that failed, so you can tell whether anything changed.

NVIDIA’s product page describes Freestyle as driver-level visual filtering and says it supports over 1200 games. This distinction matters when interpreting an update or a compatibility list. Freestyle being described as driver-level filtering does not mean every failure must be caused by the driver, nor does the broad game count guarantee that a particular feature will appear in a particular title. Use the specific symptom, the exact game-feature support, and the installed versions together rather than relying on one statement alone.

4. Interpret historical fixes carefully
NVIDIA’s release notes record earlier issues involving filters stopping in named games, a Photo Mode-ready filter not showing all supported games, and styles not persisting after a driver update. Those entries show that software-version defects have occurred; they do not show that a current installation has the same bug or that an old fix applies to every present-day failure.

If updating does not help, compare the behavior you see with the release notes for the versions involved, but do not infer a match from a similar symptom alone. The notes are version-specific and historical. They are useful context for why version matters, not a substitute for confirming the game, feature, app build, and driver build on the affected PC.
For example, a past note about styles not persisting after a driver update is relevant context if the observed symptom is a style that fails to remain selected. It is not evidence that every present-day persistence problem has the same cause. Similarly, a historical issue involving a filter stopping in a named game does not establish that a different game, or a current build, is affected. The practical use of release notes is to check whether versions and symptoms line up, not to assume they do.
The release highlights include a statement in the NVIDIA App 11.0.1 section that Game Filter defaults to off and gives the setting path used above. The statement is a direct instruction for the toggle check. Historical bug entries elsewhere in release notes should be read in their own version context; do not mix a documented default with an assumption that a particular older defect remains active.
5. If the problem remains, record details before troubleshooting further
There is no single documented repair procedure that covers every combination of overlay, filter, game, and driver. Before seeking more targeted help, write down the details that distinguish those cases:

- The exact game and whether the issue occurs in one game or more than one.
- The symptom: overlay will not open, filter controls are absent, a filter is unavailable, a filter will not apply, or a style does not persist.
- The NVIDIA App version and graphics driver version.
- The GPU and Windows version.
- Whether Game Filters and Photo Mode is enabled, and whether the game’s listing shows support for the particular feature.
These details matter because the same phrase—“filters not working”—can refer to an off setting, a feature-compatibility limit, or a version-specific defect. Without them, a precise machine-specific diagnosis is not established.
It can also help to report the sequence you tested: whether the overlay opened, whether the feature toggle was on, whether the game listing showed the requested capability, whether the app and driver were updated, and what happened on the next test. Keep the result specific. “The overlay opens in one game, but custom ReShade filters are unavailable there” is more informative than “NVIDIA is broken,” because it identifies the feature boundary and the scope of the failure.

If the issue happens in only one title, include that fact; if it happens in multiple titles, include those titles too. Likewise, state whether the problem is consistent or whether the filter appeared once and then disappeared. Do not infer a particular cause from those observations alone, but they give someone helping you the details needed to check game support and version-specific behavior.

If you are still using GeForce Experience, NVIDIA’s migration guidance tells remaining users to upgrade to NVIDIA App to retain features such as NVIDIA Overlay and ShadowPlay. Follow NVIDIA’s upgrade guidance rather than assuming instructions for NVIDIA App map exactly to the older application.
This is a separate branch of troubleshooting: first establish which application you are using. The setting path in this article is for NVIDIA App. If you remain on GeForce Experience, do not look for that exact NVIDIA App path in the older interface and conclude that the feature is absent. NVIDIA’s guidance is to upgrade if you want to retain features such as the overlay and ShadowPlay through NVIDIA App.
What NVIDIA App’s overlay and filters do
NVIDIA describes NVIDIA App as including an in-game overlay with recording and performance-monitoring tools. Its Freestyle feature provides game visual filters, including RTX Dynamic Vibrance and RTX HDR. These are related capabilities, but the overlay, filters, and Photo Mode are not interchangeable: check the particular function that fails and its support for the game in question.
Freestyle’s stated support for over 1200 games is broad, but it should not be read as a promise that every supported title exposes every tool. NVIDIA’s compatibility page separates some feature support, including custom ReShade filters and limited Photo Mode capabilities. That distinction is why checking the game-feature combination is more useful than asking only whether a title appears somewhere on the list.
The overlay is the in-game layer that brings together functions such as recording and performance monitoring; Game Filters and Photo Mode are features available through that environment. This is why “overlay not opening” and “filter unavailable” need different checks. If the overlay does not open, start with app and driver currency and capture the exact behavior. If it opens but the filter tools are absent, check the Game Filters toggle and support for that game and feature. If the filter controls are present but a particular effect is not, verify the particular capability rather than assuming all filters are universal.
