To fix numbering in Word, use the list controls rather than typing over a displayed number: choose Set Numbering Value to correct one item, Restart at 1 to begin a new sequence, and Numbering to continue a sequence across a break. If an item is at the wrong outline level, use Change List Level.
Choose the right fix for the numbering problem
| What you want | Use this command |
|---|---|
| Correct one number without changing the intended sequence | Set Numbering Value |
| Start a separate list at 1 | Restart at 1 |
| Continue the earlier sequence after a break | Numbering to continue it, or enter the intended next number |
| Move an item to the correct outline level | Change List Level |
| Repair numbered headings or custom outline numbering | Use a multilevel-list template or configure one in desktop Word |
Fix a single incorrect number
- Double-click the list numbers.
- Right-click the number that is wrong.
- Choose Set Numbering Value.
- Enter the intended value in the dialog and apply it.
This changes the number through Word’s list controls. Microsoft Support cautions: “If Word loses track of what you’ve done, problems can pop up when you want to make other list changes later.” Avoid manually typing over the displayed numeral. Microsoft’s numbered-list guidance

Restart a list at 1
- Double-click the list numbers.
- Right-click the first number that should begin the new sequence.
- Choose Restart at 1.
Use this when the later items are a separate list, not when they should continue the earlier sequence. Microsoft Support

Continue numbering across a break
If two separated sections belong to one sequence, select the later list and choose Numbering so Word continues the numbering, or supply the intended next number. If that section is meant to be independent, use Restart at 1 instead. Microsoft’s instructions for continuing a list

Repair numbered headings or a custom multilevel list
For numbered headings
Apply Word’s built-in Heading styles, then select a multilevel-list template. This ties numbering to heading hierarchy—for example, top-level headings numbered 1, 2, 3 and the next level numbered 1.1, 1.2, 1.3—rather than treating headings as unrelated list items. - Select the level to configure.
- Link the level to the relevant style, set its starting number, and choose whether it restarts after another level.

Stop Word from turning typed numbers into a list
To disable automatic recognition for future typing in the documented Windows desktop interface, open File > Options > Proofing > AutoCorrect Options > AutoFormat As You Type, then clear Automatic numbered lists. This setting prevents Word from automatically formatting newly typed numbered lists; it does not repair a numbering sequence already in the document. Microsoft Support’s AutoFormat instructions

Microsoft’s relevant support articles identify support across Microsoft 365 and multiple perpetual releases, including Word 2016, 2019, 2021, and 2024. The advanced multilevel-list procedure and the AutoCorrect path above are specifically documented for Windows desktop Word. Word for the web supports standard list formatting, but not advanced list customization. Exact control names and paths may differ in Word for Mac, localized interfaces, or releases not specified in Microsoft’s instructions.
