These reversible checks often reveal whether alerts are disabled, delayed, quiet, or appearing on another device. Menu names can differ slightly by iOS 17 update, iPhone model, language, or management profile.
Identify what is happening to your notifications
“Notifications aren’t working” can describe several different problems. Match the symptom before changing settings: an alert that arrives only when you open an app may involve the app, its account, or its network connection; an alert in Notification Center with no sound points toward sound settings or routing, not a complete permission failure.

Try the quick, reversible checks
- Turn off Focus for a test. Open Control Center, tap Focus, and turn off the active profile. Then trigger a test notification. If it works, inspect that Focus’s allowed people and apps and its schedule before deciding whether to leave it off.
- Check Scheduled Summary. Go to Settings > Notifications > Scheduled Summary and turn it off temporarily. If the alert now arrives promptly, keep the feature on only if you want scheduled delivery; remove time-sensitive apps from its list.
- Check the affected app. Open Settings > Notifications > [app] and make sure Allow Notifications is on. Enable the destinations and alert types you expect.
- Check sound and mute state. If alerts are visible but silent, check the Ring/Silent switch or Action button, raise ringer and alert volume in Settings > Sounds & Haptics, and confirm the app’s Sounds option is enabled.
- Restart the iPhone. If the settings look right, a normal restart is a low-risk next step.
Check the app’s notification settings
iOS controls notifications separately for each app. Open Settings > Notifications > [app], turn on Allow Notifications, then select where alerts may appear: Lock Screen, Notification Center, and Banners. Turn on Sounds or Badges if you want them. Apple explains the per-app controls in its notification settings guide and iPhone User Guide.
Set Show Previews to Always or When Unlocked according to your privacy preference. Previews can expose message or other app content on the Lock Screen, so they are not required for notifications to arrive.

If an alert is present in Notification Center but there is no sound, iOS is delivering at least a visual notification. Focus, mute state, volume, the app’s sound selection, a connected audio device, or Watch routing is more likely than a disabled notification permission.

Check Focus profiles, schedules, and device sharing
Focus can silence or filter alerts from selected people and apps. To inspect it, go to Settings > Focus, open the profiles you use, and review People and Apps. Check Set a Schedule too: a time, location, or app-based schedule can turn a Focus back on after you disable it manually. Apple’s guides explain Focus allow and silence rules and Focus schedules.
If a Focus activated on another Apple device is affecting the iPhone, check Settings > Focus > Share Across Devices. Turning sharing off can stop a Focus on another linked device from changing the iPhone’s state, but it also means Focus settings will no longer be shared across those devices.
Driving Focus has restrictions that differ from other profiles; do not assume adding an app to an allowed list will override every Driving Focus restriction. Apple notes that apps cannot be allowed through Driving Focus in the same way as other Focus profiles. Check Apple’s notification and Focus guidance for the relevant behavior.
Stop notifications from being held in Scheduled Summary
Scheduled Summary groups selected app notifications for delivery at scheduled times instead of delivering each one immediately. Go to Settings > Notifications > Scheduled Summary and switch it off to test. If you want to retain summaries, leave the feature enabled and remove apps for which a delay is unacceptable. In an app’s notification settings, choose Immediate Delivery if that option is available. Make sure alerts are visible where you expect
Open Settings > Notifications > [app] and verify that the desired alert destinations are selected. To check the overall Lock Screen layout, use Settings > Notifications > Display As and choose Count, Stack, or List. These choices change how alerts are presented, not whether an app has permission to send them.
If Notification Center is unavailable while the phone is locked, open Settings > Face ID & Passcode or Settings > Touch ID & Passcode. Under Allow Access When Locked, enable Notification Center if you want to view it from the Lock Screen. Check app-specific settings and accounts
An iOS permission allows an app to show notifications it generates; it cannot make the app’s service generate one. In the app, check its notification preferences, quiet hours, categories, conversation or workspace settings, and whether you are signed into the correct account. Confirm the account has not been logged out or restricted. Another device may have marked a message as read or dismissed it, depending on how that service works. Check the service’s status if the problem appears to be on its side.

Troubleshoot Messages separately
For Apple’s Messages app, open Settings > Notifications > Messages and confirm Allow Notifications and the alert destinations you want. Then open the affected conversation, tap the contact or group at the top, and check whether Hide Alerts is on. Also look for messages sorted into unknown-sender or spam categories. Apple recommends checking conversation alerts and filtered messages when Messages notifications are missing. See Apple’s guidance.
If Messages notifications are still absent, check that iMessage or SMS service is working and test both Wi-Fi and cellular data. A service, account, or carrier problem may not be corrected by changing notification settings.
Understand Apple Watch notification routing
Apple’s normal behavior is generally to alert on either the iPhone or Apple Watch, not both at once. When the iPhone is unlocked, alerts normally appear on it. When the iPhone is locked or asleep, an alert may go to a connected, unlocked Watch. The exact behavior depends on device state and configuration; an alert on the Watch does not by itself mean the iPhone has failed. Apple documents this behavior in its notification guidance and Apple Watch notification support article.
- Open the Watch app on the iPhone.
- Tap My Watch > Notifications.
- Select the affected app and choose Mirror my iPhone, Allow Notifications, or the relevant custom option.
- Check that the Watch is unlocked and connected. If it is disconnected, notifications may appear on the iPhone instead.
Third-party Watch notifications also require the paired iPhone to have a network connection. If the alert is arriving on the Watch but not the iPhone, test while the iPhone is unlocked and inspect the Watch’s connection before changing iPhone permissions.

Test Wi-Fi, cellular, and filtering software
Internet-based apps generally need a working Wi-Fi or cellular connection for their services to send push notifications. A connection alone does not guarantee delivery: the app’s server, account, or notification preferences can still be responsible.
- Open Safari and load a website to verify that the phone can reach the internet.
- Switch from Wi-Fi to cellular data, or from cellular to Wi-Fi, and test again.
- Turn Airplane Mode on briefly, then off, and retest.
- If the issue affects multiple internet-based apps, temporarily disconnect a VPN, firewall, content filter, or security tool that could be interfering with connections. On a managed work or school phone, consult the administrator before changing these settings.
- If both Wi-Fi and cellular tests point to a connection problem, contact the relevant carrier or network provider.
Use Reset Network Settings only when the symptoms point to a network configuration problem, not as a general notification remedy. The path is Settings > General > Transfer or Reset iPhone > Reset > Reset Network Settings. It removes saved Wi-Fi networks and passwords and can affect cellular, VPN, and APN settings, so you will need to reconnect afterward. It may also disrupt managed or enterprise configurations. Update, restart, or reinstall in a measured order
Update the affected app and iOS
“iOS 17” covers multiple minor releases, and a phone still on an older release may have fixes available. Go to Settings > General > Software Update and install an available compatible update. If the iPhone supports a newer major iOS release, using the latest compatible Apple software is generally preferable to staying on an old release. To update the app, open the App Store, tap your account picture, and install its available update. Apple recommends updating software when an app behaves unexpectedly. On most recent iPhones, press and hold either volume button and the side button, drag the power-off slider, wait about 30 seconds, then press and hold the side button until the Apple logo appears. A force restart is for a frozen or unusually unresponsive phone, not the routine first response to one app’s notification problem: quickly press and release Volume Up, quickly press and release Volume Down, then hold the Side button until the Apple logo appears. Apple gives the force-restart sequence for iPhone 8 and later in its restart guidance.

Reinstall only if one app is still affected
For a single persistently failing app, first update it, force-close and reopen it, restart the phone, and check the app’s account and notification settings. Delete and redownload it only after confirming that important data is backed up or synced and that you can sign back in; deleting an app can remove locally stored data. If it still fails, Apple advises contacting the app developer. Apple’s app support guidance.
Use Reset All Settings only as a last software step
Consider this only if several apps are affected, Focus, sound, visibility, and network checks are correct, and restarting and updating have not helped. It does not erase photos, messages, apps, documents, or app data, but it resets many preferences and requires substantial setup afterward.
- Open Settings.
- Tap General > Transfer or Reset iPhone > Reset.
- Tap Reset All Settings, enter the passcode, and confirm.
The reset restores notification and sound settings, Wi-Fi passwords, VPN configurations, privacy and location preferences, Apple Pay cards, and Apple Watch pairings, among other settings. Do not choose Erase All Content and Settings: that is a different, destructive option. Apple explains what the reset changes in its Reset All Settings guidance.
