The right fix depends on what is failing: Zoom permissions, a camera or microphone being used by another app, the wrong device selected, an outdated app, or a network restriction. Start with the quick checks below, then follow the section for your symptom. If a meeting is about to start, try the Zoom Web App as a fallback.

Try these quick fixes first

  1. Quit Zoom completely: Choose zoom.us → Quit Zoom from the menu bar, or press Command-Q. Closing a meeting window alone may leave Zoom running.
  2. Close competing apps: Quit FaceTime, Photo Booth, Teams, browser tabs, OBS, and other software that may be using the camera or microphone.
  3. Restart the Mac: This can release a device held by another process and clear a temporary app problem.
  4. Check permissions: Open Apple menu → System Settings → Privacy & Security and check Zoom’s access to the camera, microphone, or screen recording as needed.
  5. Test outside Zoom: Try the camera in Photo Booth or FaceTime and test the microphone in another app. If a device fails everywhere, the problem may be with macOS, the device, or its connection rather than Zoom.
  6. Try another network: If joining or signing in fails, test a different Wi-Fi network or a phone hotspot, if permitted.

After changing a privacy permission, quit and reopen Zoom. If these checks do not match your problem, use the symptom-specific steps below.

Fix Zoom permissions on your Mac

For the desktop app, open Apple menu → System Settings → Privacy & Security, then open the relevant category and enable Zoom. Depending on the feature, the categories include Camera, Microphone, Screen & System Audio Recording, Files and Folders, and Accessibility. Zoom may need administrator approval on a managed Mac. See Zoom’s macOS permission guidance.

  • Camera and microphone: Needed for video and audio input.
  • Screen & System Audio Recording: Needed to share your screen. Restart Zoom after enabling it if sharing still fails.
  • Accessibility: Relevant to remote-control features; it is not normally needed just to attend a meeting.
  • Files and Folders: May be requested for features that access files or folders.

Permission is granted to a particular app. Enabling Chrome or Safari does not enable the separate Zoom desktop app, and enabling Zoom does not enable a browser. If you are using the browser version, allow the browser itself in macOS privacy settings. Older macOS releases may call the Apple menu settings area System Preferences rather than System Settings; labels can also vary by version.

Fix a Zoom camera that is black, missing, or frozen

  1. Close other camera users: Quit FaceTime, Photo Booth, video-call apps, browser tabs, and recording software, then reopen Zoom.
  2. Select the camera in Zoom: Open Zoom → Settings → Video and choose the intended camera. Look for a live preview.
  3. Check macOS access: Go to System Settings → Privacy & Security → Camera and enable Zoom. If you changed the setting while Zoom was open, quit and reopen it.
  4. Test another app: Check the camera in Photo Booth or FaceTime. Zoom recommends this test, along with closing other camera-using programs and restarting when video fails; its guidance also recommends reinstalling if video continues to freeze or crash. Read Zoom’s camera troubleshooting steps.
  5. Restart the Mac: If the camera still will not appear, restart and check again.
  6. Reinstall only if needed: If the camera works in other apps but Zoom still fails after permissions and device selection are checked, use the official reinstall steps below.

If the camera fails in every app, investigate the Mac or the camera rather than repeatedly reinstalling Zoom. For an external webcam, check its power, USB connection, and any required vendor software. An iPhone used as Continuity Camera, or a virtual camera such as one supplied by OBS, may also be selected instead of the built-in camera. A camera that works outside Zoom points toward a Zoom selection, permission, conflict, or installation issue, but does not prove which one is responsible.

Fix a microphone or speaker that does not work

If others cannot hear you

  1. Open System Settings → Privacy & Security → Microphone and enable Zoom.
  2. In Zoom, open Settings → Audio and select the intended microphone.
  3. Use Zoom’s microphone test and watch for its input indicator to move as you speak.
  4. Check that you are not muted and that the Mac’s input level is not turned down.
  5. Reconnect a USB or Bluetooth microphone, close other apps using it, and test it in another app.

If you cannot hear other people

  1. Confirm you have joined meeting audio.
  2. In Zoom → Settings → Audio, select the intended speaker or headphones and use Zoom’s audio test.
  3. Raise the Mac’s output volume and check that the meeting is not muted.
  4. Reconnect Bluetooth headphones or try the built-in speakers or another headset.

Zoom’s audio guidance covers device selection, microphone permission, testing, and restarting or reinstalling when needed. See Zoom’s audio troubleshooting guidance. Do not apply Windows audio-driver instructions mechanically to a Mac; built-in Mac audio usually does not call for installing Windows-style drivers.

Fix Zoom screen sharing

  1. For the desktop app, open System Settings → Privacy & Security → Screen & System Audio Recording and enable Zoom.
  2. Quit and reopen Zoom, then try sharing again.
  3. If you are using the Web App, enable the browser you are using—such as Safari, Chrome, Firefox, or Edge—in the same macOS permission category, then restart the browser.
  4. If remote control is the feature that fails, check Privacy & Security → Accessibility as well.

These are separate permissions for the desktop app and browser. Screen sharing can also be restricted by a work or school administrator. If you can share a window but not the entire screen, check the available share choices and whether an organizational policy limits access. A particular protected window or application may not share normally. Zoom explains the required macOS permissions in its permission guide.

Zoom will not open, crashes, freezes, or runs slowly

  1. Force-quit and restart: Quit Zoom with Command-Q. If it is unresponsive, use Apple menu → Force Quit, select Zoom, and choose Force Quit. Restart the Mac.
  2. Check compatibility: Confirm the macOS version meets Zoom’s current requirements before trying to install a newer release.
  3. Update Zoom: Get the installer from Zoom’s official Download Center. If more than one copy of Zoom is on the Mac, make sure you update the copy you actually open.
  4. Isolate conflicts: If the failure persists, consider whether a login item, security tool, virtual camera, or audio utility is interfering. On a managed Mac, ask IT before changing security controls.
  5. Uninstall and reinstall: If a restart and update do not help, uninstall Zoom, restart the Mac, then reinstall from the official Download Center. Reinstalling can address a damaged app installation, but it cannot fix a hardware failure or a network block.

Zoom provides separate installers for Apple Silicon and Intel Macs, and notes that macOS security settings may affect app installation. To identify your Mac, choose Apple menu → About This Mac: an Apple M-series chip indicates Apple Silicon; an Intel processor indicates Intel. Select the matching installer and follow Zoom’s macOS installation instructions. If macOS asks you to approve an app from an identified developer, use the system prompt only if you downloaded Zoom from the official source.

Zoom cannot connect, sign in, or join a meeting

  1. Use the Web App as a test: If the browser version works but the desktop app does not, the issue may be specific to the app, its permissions, or its installation. If both fail, the account or network may be involved.
  2. Try a different network: Test another Wi-Fi network or a phone hotspot. If Zoom works there but not on the original network, a VPN, proxy, firewall, captive portal, or network policy may be involved.
  3. Check organizational controls: On a company or school Mac, contact the administrator before changing VPN, firewall, proxy, or endpoint-protection settings. Do not leave security software disabled as a troubleshooting shortcut.
  4. Check date and time: Incorrect system time can interfere with secure connections. Confirm the Mac’s date and time are set correctly.

For the specific error “Unable to establish secure connection to Zoom,” Zoom’s macOS procedure is to open zoom.us → Uninstall Zoom from the menu bar, confirm removal of the app and its components, restart the Mac, then reinstall from the official Download Center. If it persists, Zoom also advises reviewing calendar and contact integration settings in the web portal. See Zoom’s instructions for this error. This procedure is specific to that message; other connection failures may need network or administrator troubleshooting.

Check whether your Mac and Zoom version are supported

Zoom’s system-requirements page lists macOS 10.15 or later for the desktop app. It also says Zoom Workplace app 6.7.7 was the last version available for operating systems below macOS 10.15, so an older Mac may be unable to run a current release. Check Zoom’s system requirements for the current compatibility details.

The operating-system requirement is different from Zoom’s minimum-client-version policy. In the version table retrieved for this article, Zoom listed macOS minimum client 6.0.2, prompted version 7.0.6, and fast-track version 7.1.5, with the table marked July 20/August 3, 2026. Those dated enforcement values are not a recommendation to install a particular release; Zoom can change them. Check the live minimum client version table rather than relying on these figures later.

When the problem is not Zoom

  • Camera or microphone fails in multiple apps: Restart the Mac, check device connections and macOS settings, and contact Apple or the peripheral maker if it still fails.
  • Zoom works on another network: Ask the network owner or administrator about firewall, proxy, VPN, or other access restrictions.
  • Privacy controls are locked: A company or school may manage permissions. The administrator may need to approve the change.
  • Only the desktop app fails: Check its permissions, version, and installation; try the browser version to keep the meeting moving.

For Mac-wide hardware or macOS support, use Apple Support. Replacing a camera or buying a Zoom plan will not resolve a permission setting, incompatible macOS version, or blocked network.

Join the meeting while you troubleshoot

  • Try the Zoom Web App in a supported browser; its camera, microphone, and screen-sharing access must be granted to that browser in macOS. Zoom lists browser permission guidance for Chrome, Firefox, Safari, and Edge.
  • If the invitation offers phone dial-in, join audio by phone while using the Mac for the meeting, where available.
  • Use another headset, camera, phone, or computer if the Mac’s device is failing across apps.
  • If the meeting is blocked by an account or organization policy, tell the host and contact the account or device administrator.

The Web App is a practical diagnostic and emergency alternative, not a guarantee: it can still be affected by browser permissions, network restrictions, account access, and differences in browser features.
