How to Fix Non-Root SFTP Upload Errors in FileZilla

A successful FileZilla SFTP login does not guarantee upload access. Learn how to correct Linux permissions, Windows ACLs, OpenSSH chroot paths, starting directories, key mapping and umask behavior without granting root access.
Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

FileZilla can authenticate successfully and still be unable to upload because the SFTP server—not FileZilla—decides whether the account may create, replace, or rename files. Fix the server-side target directory, ownership or ACLs, and (when used) the chroot layout. Keep the account non-root: give it write and traverse permission only where uploads belong.

What a “permission denied” upload error actually means

FileZilla is the client application. After it opens an SFTP session, the server checks the authenticated username against the target path. A successful connection proves only that the host, port, credentials and authentication method were accepted. It does not prove that the account can write to the directory FileZilla is displaying.

The usual causes are a directory without write permission, a parent directory without execute (traverse) permission, an NTFS ACL that denies the account, or an OpenSSH chroot whose root and writable subdirectories are laid out incorrectly. A file can also upload successfully and then appear to have the wrong permissions because the SFTP server applies the account’s umask.

Do not solve any of these by making the account root or enabling root login. Correct the path and grant the smallest directory permission that meets the upload requirement.

Fast triage: identify which layer is failing

  1. Read FileZilla’s exact response. “Permission denied,” “Failure,” and “Could not start transfer” point to different stages. Expand the transfer log and note the remote path, operation (upload, overwrite, rename or chmod), and server response.
  2. Confirm the session is SFTP. In Site Manager choose the SFTP protocol, enter the intended host and port, and use the exact server username. Do not test an FTP or FTPS entry and assume it uses the same permissions.
  3. Confirm authentication separately from authorization. If you use a key, set Site Manager → Logon Type → Key file and select the matching private key. A “server refused our key” message normally means that the public key is absent from the account, belongs to another username, or is being read from the wrong key file. Fix that authentication problem before investigating directory permissions.
  4. Record the remote directory after login. The path shown in the Remote site pane is the path being tested. A user may be restricted to a chroot and therefore see a path that is different from the server’s physical path.
  5. Test a new filename. If creating a new file works but replacing an existing file fails, inspect the existing file’s ownership, ACL and read-only attributes. If both fail, inspect the directory and every parent directory.
  6. Ask the administrator to test from the server. On Linux, a directory listing and a temporary file creation performed as the SFTP account quickly distinguish a FileZilla issue from a server permission issue. On Windows, inspect the effective NTFS permissions and OpenSSH logs.
  7. Validate configuration before restarting services. For OpenSSH, run sshd -t with administrative privileges. Correct syntax errors first; otherwise a restart can leave the service unavailable.

Fix the FileZilla connection and remote path

Use the intended account and protocol

Open Site Manager and verify the host name, port, protocol and username. SFTP normally uses the SSH service port, but an administrator may have selected a different port. A connection made with an administrator’s saved entry can look healthy while the non-root account still lacks write access, so compare the username shown in the log with the account that owns the upload directory.

Check key-file mapping

For public-key authentication, the private key selected in Site Manager must correspond to a public key authorized for that same username. “Server refused our key” is not a directory-permission error. Have the administrator install the correct public key for the account, then reconnect and confirm the username in FileZilla’s status log.

Set the correct starting directory

If login succeeds but the account opens in an unexpected folder, an administrator can set an internal-SFTP starting directory:

ForceCommand internal-sftp -d /uploads

The -d option selects the starting directory; it does not change the chroot boundary. The directory must exist inside the account’s visible filesystem and have the permissions required for the account to list and write there. A starting-directory setting cannot grant access that the underlying ownership or ACL denies.

Linux and OpenSSH: repair ownership and directory permissions

Understand the permissions an upload needs

For a new file, the account needs write permission on the destination directory and execute permission on that directory. Execute permission on a directory means “may traverse and access entries,” not “may run files.” Every parent directory between the account’s starting point and the destination also needs execute permission. A parent that is readable but not executable can still produce “permission denied.”

To overwrite or delete a file, the important permission is usually on the containing directory. The existing file’s owner and mode can still matter for operations such as changing its mode, but granting broad write access to all files is rarely necessary. Check the complete path with an administrator using commands such as:

namei -l /srv/sftp/account/uploads
ls -ld /srv/sftp/account /srv/sftp/account/uploads
ls -l /srv/sftp/account/uploads

Adapt the paths to your server. The output should show the intended account or group with directory write and execute access, and each parent with execute (traverse) access.

Use a dedicated upload directory

Create a directory specifically for inbound files rather than making an entire home or application tree writable. One common pattern is:

sudo mkdir -p /srv/sftp/account/uploads
sudo chown account:uploaders /srv/sftp/account/uploads
sudo chmod 2770 /srv/sftp/account/uploads

The set-group-ID bit in 2770 makes new entries inherit the directory’s group on systems that support it. Use a different group or mode when your policy requires it. If only the account should write, assign ownership to that account and grant no write permission to unrelated users. If several named accounts need access, put them in a dedicated group and review membership before changing the mode.

Do not blindly run recursive ownership or mode changes over an application directory. A command such as chown -R can break a service or expose files that were never meant to be uploaded. Change only the upload path, and preserve ownership needed by the application that consumes the files.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Use ACLs when group modes are not enough

On a server that uses POSIX ACLs, an administrator can grant a named account or group access to one directory without changing the owner:

sudo setfacl -m u:account:rwx /srv/sftp/account/uploads
sudo setfacl -m d:u:account:rwx /srv/sftp/account/uploads

The default ACL affects newly created children. Check the resulting effective permissions with getfacl; an ACL mask can reduce the rights shown by the user entry. Remove an ACL that was added for testing once the correct group-based policy is in place.

OpenSSH chroot: the directory layout that avoids upload failures

A chroot changes what the SFTP account can see. The chroot root is the account’s apparent filesystem root, not necessarily the server’s real root. OpenSSH requires the chroot directory itself to be controlled by the system and not writable by the restricted user. Making that root writable commonly causes a chroot startup failure or creates an unsafe layout.

Place a writable child directory inside the controlled root:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
/srv/sftp/account/ # chroot root: administrator-owned, not user-writable
└── uploads/ # writable by the SFTP account or upload group

The account logs in and may see / as the chroot root; the physical /srv/sftp/account path is hidden. Give write permission to /uploads, not to the chroot root. If the account is forced to start in /uploads, that path is interpreted inside the chroot.

Check the OpenSSH match block

An administrator should review the account’s Match User or Match Group block in sshd_config. A typical pattern is:

Match User account
    ChrootDirectory /srv/sftp/account
    ForceCommand internal-sftp -d /uploads
    X11Forwarding no
    AllowTcpForwarding no

The exact settings depend on the server’s security policy. After editing, validate with sshd -t, then reload or restart the SSH service according to the operating system. Check the service status and logs immediately; a syntax error or an ownership violation can prevent the account from starting an SFTP session.

Windows OpenSSH: repair NTFS ACLs and chroot settings

Windows OpenSSH uses NTFS ACLs rather than Linux mode bits. A user can appear to have access through one group while a deny entry, inheritance rule or missing traverse permission blocks the operation. Check the effective permissions on the chroot root, the writable child directory and every parent directory.

Keep the chroot root controlled

Microsoft’s SFTP troubleshooting guidance requires a writable directory within the chroot while users do not have write permission on the chroot directory itself. Keep ownership and full control for SYSTEM and Administrators on the chroot root, then grant the SFTP account or its dedicated group Modify (or the narrower rights your policy requires) on the child upload directory.

Inspect and repair ACLs with icacls

An administrator can inspect permissions with:

icacls "C:SFTPaccount"
icacls "C:SFTPaccountuploads"

Grant access to the intended account or group on the upload directory, preserving SYSTEM and Administrators on the chroot root. A controlled example is:

icacls "C:SFTPaccountuploads" /grant "SftpUploaders:(OI)(CI)M"

(OI)(CI) applies inheritance to files and subdirectories, and M means Modify. Replace the group and path with your own values, and use a narrower permission set when users must only create files. Avoid broad grants such as Everyone:Full Control. After changes, reconnect and verify that the account can create, read and—only if required—replace a test file.

Validate configuration and review logs

Run sshd -t to validate the OpenSSH configuration. Then inspect the OpenSSH service log and Windows Event Viewer for chroot, authentication and authorization errors. A configuration that parses correctly can still fail at session start if the chroot path is not local, the required directory is missing, or ACLs do not meet OpenSSH’s requirements.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Why the upload succeeds but the file mode is wrong

Upload authorization and the permissions assigned to the new file are separate decisions. The SFTP server applies the remote account’s umask when creating a file. Red Hat documents a default SFTP creation mode of 0644 before umask restriction (Red Hat, 2026). The resulting mode may therefore be more restrictive than a user expects.

First decide who must read, modify or execute the uploaded files. Then have the administrator inspect the server’s SFTP settings and any account-specific umask. Red Hat documents server-side controls including -m and -u; changing them affects every file created under that configuration and can either expose data or prevent a downstream process from reading it.

Do not use a permissive umask as a substitute for directory ownership. If the transfer itself fails, fix the directory and ACL first. If the transfer works but an application cannot consume the file, compare the resulting mode, group ownership and application account rather than granting root access.

Use FileZilla’s detailed errors and server logs

FileZilla’s transfer queue and message log often reveal whether the failed operation was STOR (upload), overwrite, rename or a permission-changing request. Capture the complete response, including the remote path, before asking an administrator to change permissions. A failed CHMOD after a successful upload is a different problem from a failed upload.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

On Windows OpenSSH, review the service logs and Event Viewer after validating the configuration. On FileZilla Pro Enterprise Server, behavior settings can re-enable detailed errors for failed permission changes; enable that detail when the visible message is only “Failure.” Server-side logs are authoritative because they show the account and path that the operating system evaluated.

Choosing the right deployment and isolation model

Choice Permission model Isolation and layout Administrative trade-off
Native Linux/OpenSSH POSIX owner, group, mode bits and optional ACLs Chroot requires a system-controlled root and writable child directory Fine-grained command-line control, but administrators must maintain ownership, groups and logs
Windows OpenSSH NTFS ACLs, inheritance and effective permissions Chroot must be local; SYSTEM and Administrators retain control of the root while the user writes inside it Graphical and command-line ACL tools are available, but inherited denies can be difficult to diagnose
Chrooted account Normal platform permissions inside a restricted filesystem view Higher isolation; the root is not writable and upload directories must be created inside it Safer exposure boundary, with additional path and ownership rules
Non-chrooted account Normal platform permissions over the account’s visible filesystem No chroot layout requirement; directory permissions still apply Simpler to administer, but a path mistake can expose more of the server
Self-managed SFTP You control users, groups, ACLs, chroot and logging Any layout that meets the operating system and OpenSSH rules Maximum control and responsibility for patching, backups and incident response
Managed SFTP hosting Depends on the provider’s exposed user and directory controls Provider-defined isolation and paths Less server maintenance; verify that administrators can set the upload directory, ACLs, keys and logs you require

Least-privilege implementation checklist

  • Create a dedicated account for file transfer; do not share a root or administrator credential.
  • Use a dedicated upload directory rather than making a home, web root or application directory broadly writable.
  • Grant write and execute on the upload directory and execute (traverse) on required parents.
  • For chrooted users, keep the chroot root owned and controlled by the system; put writable storage in a child directory.
  • On Windows, preserve SYSTEM and Administrators control of the chroot root and grant the intended account or group access only to the child directory.
  • Use groups or narrowly scoped ACLs when several accounts need the same drop location.
  • Review overwrite, delete, rename and chmod rights separately; “can upload” does not automatically mean “can change every existing file.”
  • Validate sshd_config with sshd -t before reloading the service.
  • Record the final remote path in the account documentation so operators do not upload to a similarly named directory.
  • Test with a harmless filename, verify ownership and mode, then remove the test file according to policy.

Symptom-to-fix troubleshooting table

Symptom Likely cause Next check
Connection succeeds, every upload returns permission denied Destination or parent lacks write/execute permission; Windows ACL denies access Inspect the complete path as the SFTP account and review Linux mode/ACL or NTFS effective permissions
New files upload, but overwrite fails Existing file ownership, read-only state or directory policy differs Check the existing file and containing directory; test rename and delete separately
Login fails after enabling chroot Chroot root is missing, not local, writable by the user or incorrectly owned Check ownership/ACLs, path existence and OpenSSH logs; validate with sshd -t
User sees the wrong folder Default home or SFTP starting directory is not the intended upload path Set ForceCommand internal-sftp -d /uploads and ensure that directory exists inside the visible root
“Server refused our key” Public key is missing, mapped to another username or private key selection is wrong Verify Site Manager → Logon Type → Key file and the account’s authorized key
Upload works but another process cannot read the file Umask, group ownership or ACL produces a restrictive mode Inspect the resulting mode and group; adjust server-side umask or ACL deliberately
FileZilla reports only “Failure” after transfer A follow-up chmod or permission-change request failed Enable detailed errors where available and inspect server logs for the specific operation

When you cannot change the server

If you do not administer the host, you cannot reliably fix a denied upload from FileZilla alone. Send the host administrator the exact username, remote path, timestamp, operation and full FileZilla response. Ask them to verify the destination’s ownership or ACL, every parent directory’s traverse permission, the chroot layout, the account’s starting directory and the relevant logs.

A managed SFTP service can be an alternative when your team cannot edit OpenSSH configuration, filesystem ownership or Windows ACLs. Before moving data, confirm that the service exposes the controls you need: per-user keys, a defined upload directory, overwrite policy, audit logs, retention and a way to separate users. A service that hides those controls may simply move the same permission problem behind a different interface.

Final verification before declaring the fix complete

  1. Reconnect with the non-root username and the intended key.
  2. Confirm the Remote site path is the approved upload directory.
  3. Upload a new test file.
  4. If required, overwrite, rename and delete a test file to verify the exact operations your workflow needs.
  5. On the server, confirm owner, group, ACL and resulting mode; check that the downstream application can read the file.
  6. Review logs for authentication, chroot or permission warnings, then remove test data.

Once these checks pass, leave the account non-root and keep the writable boundary limited to the directory used for transfers.
