If a filename or path contains spaces, put the complete path in quotes or escape each space using the syntax of the shell you are actually running. If the error continues, quoting may not be the issue: check the exact filename, extension, current directory, and how the command handles its arguments.
Why a space can make a valid path fail
In POSIX-style shells such as Bash, an unquoted space separates command-line words. A path like Quarterly Report.csv can therefore be treated as two arguments rather than one filename. Quoting the path or escaping the spaces keeps it together as one shell word. The POSIX Shell Command Language and the GNU Bash manual describe these quoting rules.

That only fixes how the shell parses the command. It does not create a file, correct a misspelling, or make a relative path point to a different folder.
Quote or escape the path in Bash and POSIX-style shells
Quote the complete path
For a literal filename that does not contain a single quote, enclose the whole path in single quotes:
#1 Best Overall
- Intel Core i5-1335U Processor (12M Cache, 12 Threads, up to 4.6 GHz) - 256GB Solid State Drive - 16GB DDR4 SDRAM
- 15.6" FHD (1920x1080) Non-Touch Anti-Glare Display - Intel UHD 620 Integrated Graphics - Stereo Speakers
- 720p HD Webcam with Privacy Shutter. Integrated Microphone - Intel Dual Band Wireless-AC (2x2) 8265, Bluetooth Version 4.2
- I/O Ports: 2x USB 3.0, 1x USB 3.1 Type-C 3.1, Headphone/Mic Combo Port, 4-in-1 Card Reader, HDMI, Kensington Mini-Lock Slot
- Linux Mint (Cinnamon) 64-Bit - Keyboard with Full NumberPad - Fast Charging
ls 'Quarterly Report.csv'
cat '/home/guest/My Documents/notes.txt'
Quoting the complete path is especially useful when directory names as well as the filename contain spaces. To reduce uncertainty about where a relative path starts, use an absolute path temporarily and confirm it with a listing command.
Escape each space
You can also put a backslash before each space in a POSIX-style shell:

- Intel Core i5-10210U (up to 4.2GHz) - 1TB PCIe NVMe + 1TB HDD - 32GB DDR4 SDRAM
- 17.3" HD+ (1600x900) Display, Intel UHD Graphics 620
- Built in HD 720p Webcam with Microphone - Bluetooth Version4.2
- I/O Ports: 2x USB 3.1 (Data Only), 1x USB 2.0, 1x HDMI, 1x Headphone/Microphone Combo Jack
- Linux Mint Cinnamon 64-Bit - 6-Row Keyboard w/ Full Numberpad
ls Quarterly Report.csv
Use one method consistently: either quote the path or escape its spaces. Single and double quotes are not interchangeable when a command includes variables or shell substitutions. Single quotes preserve the characters inside literally; double quotes still allow certain expansions. If your path uses variables, follow the quoting rules for the specific shell and command rather than copying a literal-path example unchanged.

Quote a path in PowerShell
In PowerShell, enclose a path containing spaces in quotes so it is passed as one argument. For example:

Microsoft’s PowerShell quoting rules explain that PowerShell processes the quoted string before passing it to an external command, removing the outer quote characters. If a native executable still rejects the path, check that program’s argument syntax and the PowerShell version in use; shell quoting and the receiving program’s argument handling are separate parts of the process.
Check the path if quoting does not fix it
- Identify the active shell. Bash, zsh, PowerShell, and other command interpreters can use different parsing rules. Use syntax for the shell running the command, not merely the terminal application.
- Quote or escape the complete path. Include any directory components with spaces, not just the final filename.
- Confirm the exact name. List the parent directory and check spelling, capitalization where relevant, and the file extension. A name such as
report.csvis not the same path asreport. - Check where the command is looking. A relative path is resolved from the current working location. In PowerShell,
.and..are relative path forms; a fully qualified path avoids relying on the current location. See Microsoft’s PowerShell path syntax documentation. - Check the command’s argument rules. If the target is an external program rather than a shell builtin or PowerShell cmdlet, verify how that program expects arguments and whether the shell has transformed the string.
- On Windows, inspect path form and naming. Check backslash separators and the drive/path form. A drive-qualified path without a following backslash can be relative to the current directory on that drive. Also check whether the actual name ends with a space or period: ordinary Windows shell and UI use does not permit those endings. Microsoft’s Windows filename and path documentation covers these constraints.
Quick examples by shell
| Shell | Example | Use when |
|---|---|---|
| Bash or POSIX-style shell | cat '/home/guest/My Documents/notes.txt' |
Pass a literal path containing spaces as one argument. |
| Bash or POSIX-style shell | ls Quarterly Report.csv |
Escape spaces in a literal filename. |
| PowerShell | Get-ChildItem 'C:ReportsQuarterly Report.csv' |
Pass a spaced path to a cmdlet; for native programs, check that program’s argument syntax if needed. |
These examples apply to the named shells and literal paths. There is no single quoting recipe established here for every shell, terminal, programming language, or external command.
