Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →If your TV sends no sound to a soundbar or receiver over optical, check the cable path and selected inputs first, then set the TV’s digital audio output to PCM and test another source. These reversible checks help distinguish a settings or compatibility issue from a bad cable or device.
1. Check the optical connection
Trace the cable from the TV’s labeled DIGITAL AUDIO OUT or OPTICAL jack to the soundbar or receiver’s DIGITAL AUDIO IN or OPTICAL jack. Optical connections are directional: the TV’s output must connect to the audio device’s input.

- Make sure both ends are fully seated and remove any protective caps.
- Inspect the cable and connectors for visible damage or a loose fit.
- Confirm the soundbar or receiver is powered on and connected to the input used by the cable.
Samsung’s soundbar troubleshooting guidance also recommends checking that the connected source matches the selected port.

2. Select optical output on the TV and optical input on the audio device
In the TV’s Sound settings, choose an option such as Optical, Optical Digital, Digital Audio Out, or external wired speakers. Then use the soundbar or receiver’s input control to select Optical, D.IN, or the name assigned to its optical jack. The exact labels and menu path depend on the model and software version.
#1 Best Overall
- Optical digital audio cable: Perfect for equipment with a TOSLINK interface (OPT In / OPT Out or S/PDIF In / S/PDIF Out). TOSLINK connector to TOSLINK connector (F05 connector)
- Versatile: Ideal for transmitting crystal-clear digital audio from your TV, video game console (PS3/PS4/Xbox One), DVD/Blu-ray player, or TV streaming box to a soundbar, amplifier/amp, stereo/Hi-Fi system, D/A converter, and more
- High-End: This metal-free fiber optic audio cable, featuring a fully flexible PVC jacket, is entirely immune to electrical interference. Each cable undergoes multi-stage testing during manufacturing to ensure maximum product quality and durability
- 24K gold-plated connectors: Corrosion resistant gold plating keeps connectors clean. And because these cables are fiber optic, they provide 100 % signal transmission with 0 % loss
- No risk: 36 months manufacturer warranty
For example, LG’s optical-connection instructions show different Sound Out paths for different webOS generations. Sony also notes that certain Bravia series have a separate optical-output enable setting; that option is not universal. Check the manual or support page for your TV and audio device rather than relying on a generic menu sequence.
3. Try PCM as a compatibility test
Find the TV’s Digital Audio Out, Digital Sound Out, or similarly named setting and switch it to PCM, then test again. A soundbar or receiver may not decode the compressed format currently being sent. Sony’s wired-audio troubleshooting guidance recommends PCM when the connected device may not support the current format.

- Please REMOVE the end protective caps before using the cable.
- IN THE BOX: 6-foot digital optical audio Toslink cable.
- CLEAR AUDIO: Multi-channel, fiber-optic digital audio output; corrosion resistant gold-plated connectors and buffer tubing for optimal signal transfer.
- DURABLE: Lightweight, flexible cable with a rugged PVC exterior and removable rubber tips that protect the cable when not plugged in; remove before using.
- CONNECTS DEVICES: Quickly connects a sound bar, CD player, Blu-Ray player, game console, or other device to an audio system or TV.
PCM is a troubleshooting choice, not a universally best setting. Available formats and menu wording vary by TV, source, and receiving device; use the model-specific documentation to understand the options.

4. Test another source or program
Try a built-in TV app, a broadcast, or another connected source. If sound works for one but not another, the issue may be tied to that source or its audio format rather than the optical connection itself.

Sony says the optical port is designed to output sound when the content contains digital audio such as PCM or Dolby Digital, and that output availability depends on the content. Its explanation appears on a support page for the XR-65X93L; behavior and settings can differ on other models. Do not assume every app, channel, or connected device sends audio in the same way.
5. Isolate the cable, TV, and soundbar or receiver
If the settings and source checks do not restore sound, test the parts of the signal path with known-working equipment where possible:

- Try a known-working optical cable between the TV and audio device.
- Connect another optical source to the soundbar or receiver to check whether its optical input works.
- Connect the TV to another known-working optical receiver to check the TV output.
These cross-tests help locate the failure without assuming the TV is defective. If the existing cable is damaged, replace it; if you cannot borrow a known-good cable for testing, an optical digital audio cable is the direct replacement to consider. Samsung advises contacting support if its soundbar remains silent after troubleshooting, and Sony lists cable condition, compatibility, and device operation among possible causes.
6. Contact support with the test results
