If a Nintendo Switch 2 game will not download or update, start by recording the full error message, then check the console’s internet connection, system software, and available storage—in that order. Retry after addressing any clear issue. If only one title still fails, use support for that specific error code or contact the game’s publisher rather than repeating generic resets.
1. Record what the console reports
Before retrying, write down the complete error code and wording shown on screen. The code can point to a more relevant fix than the general steps below. If no code appears, note whether the download never starts, pauses, or fails at about the same point each time.

Nintendo has an error-code directory, but its visible console choices do not include Switch 2. If the directory will not accept your code or does not give Switch 2 guidance, use the Nintendo Switch 2 support hub or contact Nintendo support for your region. Do not apply instructions for an original Switch code to Switch 2 unless Nintendo confirms they apply.

2. Check whether the internet problem is limited to the console
Open System Settings and check whether the console is connected to the internet. Nintendo describes internet access over wireless or wired connections; Switch 2 network setup is located under Internet in System Settings, as identified in its health and safety information.

- If other devices in your home also cannot get online, investigate the home internet connection first.
- If other devices work but the Switch 2 does not, follow Nintendo’s current Switch 2 network instructions for your region.
Nintendo’s available connection article covers the original Switch and points to a distinct Switch 2 page, so its detailed instructions should not be treated as Switch 2-specific. The evidence here does not establish changing DNS settings or buying network hardware as standard fixes.
3. Check for a Switch 2 system update
When the console is online, go to System Settings > System > System Update and follow Nintendo’s instructions if an update is offered. Nintendo’s update guidance says to update while the console is in normal condition. Stop if the system appears damaged or is not operating normally, and consult Nintendo support rather than forcing an update.

Storage is a likely cause when the console specifically says there is not enough room. Check the available console storage, then delete or archive software or data you no longer need using Nintendo’s current Switch 2 storage guidance. The Switch 2 support hub identifies microSD Express as the card type for expanding Switch 2 storage. An ordinary microSD card should not be assumed compatible.

- Explore a vast underground world—by smashing your way through it!
- A brand-new 3D platforming action adventure starring Donkey Kong and Pauline
- Bash through just about anything in groundbreaking exploration! Crash through walls and carve tunnels—the more you smash, the more areas open up to you
- Pair up with Pauline to use Bananza Transformations: smash through obstacles with the raw strength of Kong form, gallop with incredible speed as a Zebra, and more

A compatible microSD Express card is an optional way to address a storage constraint; it will not resolve a network, system-update, or title-specific problem. If considering a card, check that Switch 2 compatibility is explicit, choose capacity based on your available space and needs, and buy from a seller you trust.

After fixing a connection, installing an offered system update, or freeing space, retry the download once. Check whether the problem affects multiple titles or only one:

- Shape the world and build a cozy new life with Pokémon as a Ditto transformed to look like a human.
- Use other Pokémon’s moves, like Bulbasaur’s Leafage, to revitalize and navigate the world around you.
- Meet and befriend more Pokémon as you help nature flourish.
- Gather materials to create items and furniture, till the fields to grow delicious crops, build homes for the Pokémon you meet, and more—there’s so much to do!
- Experience a world with varied weather, real-time days and nights, and other surprises.
- Several titles fail: Recheck the console’s internet connection and the exact error. Use Nintendo’s current Switch 2 support for your region.
- One title fails: Consult Nintendo’s code-specific guidance or the game publisher’s support page. Software updates can be title-specific, so a generic console reset may not address the cause.
The available Switch 2 guidance does not establish one universal reset procedure for failed downloads. Avoid a factory reset unless Nintendo gives code-specific instructions and explains how to protect any data you need.
Quick Recap
Quick diagnostic checklist
- Write down the exact error code and message, or describe when the download stalls or fails.
- Check the connection in System Settings; determine whether other devices are offline too.
- With the console online and operating normally, check System Settings > System > System Update.
- If the console reports insufficient space, free storage or consider a compatible microSD Express card.
- Retry once. If the error remains, use Switch 2-specific Nintendo support or contact the publisher if only one game is affected.
