If a payment fails on the Japanese Nintendo eShop, first check that your Nintendo Account’s country/region is Japan and that your payment method is eligible for that storefront. Then check your balance and family purchase restrictions. If you use a Japanese prepaid code, the account must be set to Japan. The exact steps depend on whether you’re using a Switch or Switch 2, and Nintendo’s general guidance does not identify why a particular bank declined a transaction.
1. Confirm your account is set to Japan
The eShop follows the country/region set on your Nintendo Account. Check the account’s country/region and make sure you’re opening the Japan eShop. Nintendo’s Switch eShop guidance says its Japan-specific instructions apply when the account country/region is Japan: Nintendo Switch eShop overview.

If your account is set to another country or region, a Japanese-market code may not redeem. Don’t change regions as a first troubleshooting step without checking the consequences for your account and purchases; the sources cited here establish the Japan requirement for Japanese codes, not a universal fix for every payment error.

Switch 2: foreign payment instruments are not accepted for Japan eShop top-ups
For adding balance to the Japan eShop on Switch 2, Nintendo lists credit card, PayPal, and prepaid card as methods. It says a credit card issued abroad, a PayPal account opened abroad, and a prepaid card sold abroad cannot be used there. See Nintendo’s Switch 2 balance-add instructions. This restriction is documented for Switch 2; don’t assume the page establishes identical rules for every other device.

Switch: use a supported console top-up route
Nintendo’s Switch instructions list credit card, prepaid card number, and PayPal for adding eShop balance from the console. A payment method can still fail even when it is listed, and the instructions do not explain an individual issuer’s decline reason. See Nintendo’s Switch balance-add instructions.
3. Add balance through the right route
On Switch, open Nintendo eShop, go to the account information screen, check the current balance, and choose the option to add balance. Nintendo documents credit card, prepaid card number, or PayPal for this console flow.
On the Nintendo Account website, Nintendo documents adding balance with a prepaid code; credit card and PayPal are not available through that web flow. Follow Nintendo’s balance-add instructions for the applicable route.

Balance belongs to a Nintendo Account, cannot be combined with the balance of another account, and is nonrefundable. Digital product purchases are also nonrefundable, so confirm the signed-in account before adding funds or buying: Nintendo’s purchase and balance guidance.
4. If a Japanese prepaid card or download code will not redeem
Check both the code’s market and the account country/region. Nintendo Support Japan states: 「日本国内向けに販売されているダウンロードカードやプリペイドカードの番号は、ニンテンドーアカウントの『国/地域』設定が『日本』になっていないと引き換えできません。」 In other words, codes sold for Japan require the Nintendo Account country/region to be Japan. See Nintendo’s Switch eShop purchase procedure.
A prepaid card can be a fallback when another supported payment route is unavailable, but verify that the specific card is for Japan before buying or entering its code. A foreign-sold prepaid card is specifically excluded for Switch 2 Japan eShop balance top-ups.

5. Check family purchase restrictions
A family group purchase restriction can block purchases made with existing balance and can also block credit-card balance additions. Nintendo says adding balance with a prepaid code is not blocked by that setting, but the resulting balance may still be unusable for a purchase if purchase restrictions apply. Review the family group settings and, if necessary, ask the family group administrator to check the restriction: Nintendo family group purchase restrictions.

Nintendo Switch Online automatic renewal
If a card or PayPal renewal payment fails, the renewal does not go through and automatic renewal is turned off. A balance-only renewal also fails and turns off renewal if the account does not have enough funds. Check the membership and renewal status after the payment error: Nintendo Switch Online renewal guidance.
Preorders
A preorder paid only with balance is automatically cancelled if the balance is insufficient when settlement occurs. If the preorder uses a card or PayPal, Nintendo may attempt to cover a shortfall; the preorder can be cancelled if that top-up fails, including when the card is expired or over its limit. Check the preorder status after a failed settlement: Nintendo preorder payment guidance.

7. If the payment still fails
Record the exact on-screen error code and note the console model, account country/region, payment type, and whether the transaction is a purchase, preorder, or renewal. Contact Nintendo Support with the code; contact the card issuer or PayPal as well if the method itself is being declined. Nintendo’s cited guidance explains supported methods and account restrictions, but it does not diagnose every error code or the issuer’s reason for rejecting a specific charge. Avoid repeating a transaction until you have confirmed its status, particularly for a preorder or renewal.
Outdated 3DS and Wii U payment advice
Instructions for Nintendo 3DS and Wii U are not current for card troubleshooting: Nintendo says credit cards and transit IC payments stopped being available in those systems’ eShops on 18 January 2022. That notice does not change the Switch and Switch 2 procedures above: Nintendo’s 3DS and Wii U payment notice.
