How to Fix Nintendo eShop Download and Purchase Errors

The fix for a Nintendo eShop error depends on its exact code, the failed action, console model, and account region. Start with Nintendo’s matching support guidance, then check service status, connection, storage, account history, or code-region compatibility as appropriate.
Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The right fix depends on what failed: opening the eShop, completing a purchase, redeeming a code, starting or continuing a download, or finding a game you already bought. First record the exact error code and message, then follow the Nintendo Support instructions for that code and your console, account region, and situation. Nintendo Switch and Switch 2 support steps can differ; there is no single fix for every eShop error.

Start with the exact error code

Write down the complete error code and message exactly as displayed before changing settings. Search Nintendo Support for that code, and use its instructions rather than borrowing a remedy from a different error. Codes can point to different causes: an eShop connection issue is not the same as a maintenance notice, a declined purchase, or a region mismatch on a download code.

As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.

  1. Record the code and message. Include whether the problem occurred while opening the eShop, paying, redeeming a code, downloading, or redownloading.
  2. Note the console and account region. Identify whether you use Nintendo Switch or Switch 2, and the country/region set for the Nintendo Account involved. Keep the region in mind when reading support instructions.
  3. Open the matching Nintendo Support error-code page. Follow that page’s steps for the exact code and console. If the page’s guidance does not resolve the issue, use Nintendo Support rather than trying unrelated fixes.

When searching, include the code as well as a short description such as “unable to communicate with the server” or “download stuck or will not progress.” A symptom-only search can return guidance for a different failure.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

It also helps to note what happened immediately before the error: whether you were opening the store, confirming payment, entering a code, or waiting for a download. These details separate an unsuccessful transaction from a successful purchase that has not yet been downloaded. If the message changes after a retry, record the new message too; do not assume it has the same cause as the first one.

Check whether Nintendo eShop service is available

For a server communication error, check Nintendo’s network status information before troubleshooting your home network. Service maintenance can prevent an otherwise valid action from completing, and changing console settings will not resolve an active service interruption.

Error 2813-9200 during download-code redemption

Nintendo identifies error 2813-9200 during download-code redemption as a sign that eShop server maintenance is ongoing. Check network status and try redeeming the code after maintenance ends. If no maintenance notice is posted but the communication error remains, follow the instructions for that code and wait before trying again.

If the status page shows no interruption

A clear service-status page does not by itself prove that the issue is on your console or internet connection. Use the exact error-code guidance, and retry only as that guidance recommends. If Nintendo still reports a communication error, allow time and check the status again rather than repeatedly changing unrelated settings.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Status information is a check at the time you encounter the error, not a permanent diagnosis. If the same code appears later, check again because availability can change. A maintenance-related redemption problem and a local connection problem may look similar at first, but the matching code instructions and current status help distinguish them.

If the eShop will not connect or a download cannot communicate

Nintendo’s guidance for error 2137-8056 includes checking service status, improving Wi-Fi conditions, testing connection changes, and contacting Nintendo Support if the issue persists. Treat network changes as tests, not guaranteed fixes: a change is useful only if you check whether the connection works afterward.

  1. Check Nintendo service status. If service maintenance is underway, wait until it ends before continuing with local network troubleshooting.
  2. Review the local Wi-Fi conditions. Check that the console can reach the internet and consider whether its wireless signal or surroundings could be affecting the connection. Improve the conditions if practical.
  3. Make one network or console change at a time. This makes it easier to tell whether that specific change affected the error.
  4. Test the connection after each change. Nintendo Support says: “Test your connection after any changes are made to the console or network environment to determine if the change resolves your issue.”
  5. Return to the code-specific steps if the error remains. If those steps do not solve it, contact Nintendo Support with the code, what you were doing, and the changes you tested.

A server communication message does not establish that your internet provider, router, or console is at fault. Use the error page and the result of each connection test to decide what to do next.

Keep the troubleshooting proportional to the evidence. A connection-related code makes service status and Wi-Fi conditions relevant; it does not establish that a particular device or provider caused the problem. If a test does not change the result, note that and move on to the exact Nintendo instructions rather than repeating the same change or applying a fix meant for a different code.

If a download is paused or stuck

A download that appears stalled may be paused because software is running. Nintendo notes that some software pauses downloads while it is being played. Check internet access, close the running software, and refresh the download progress before assuming the download has failed.

  1. Confirm that the console has internet access. If it does not, use the connection troubleshooting for the displayed error code.
  2. Close the software currently running. A game or other software can pause a download while you use it.
  3. Refresh the download progress. On the console, open User Settings and check Update Download Progress.
  4. Restart the console if needed. Nintendo lists restarting as a next step if checking the connection, closing software, and refreshing progress do not help.
  5. Check available storage. If the download still will not proceed, make sure the console has enough free space, including for any update data.

Download time varies with the internet environment, so a slow transfer is not by itself proof of an error. If progress does not resume after these steps, check the code-specific Nintendo guidance rather than treating every slow download as a network fault.

The order matters: a download paused while software is running is different from a download that cannot communicate with Nintendo’s servers or one that cannot fit in available storage. Closing the software and using the progress-refresh option are the first targeted checks for a pause. If those do not help, the displayed code, connection test, and available space point to the next appropriate branch.

Check storage before retrying a download

Nintendo says downloads need sufficient free space in system memory or on a microSD card. Update data may need more capacity than expected, so having room for a game does not necessarily mean there is enough room for its update.

  • If storage is sufficient: continue with the error-specific connection or download steps; buying additional storage will not fix a service, account, payment, or network error.
  • If storage is insufficient: clear space or use a compatible microSD card. Verify compatibility for your specific Switch model before buying one; the guidance here does not establish a particular brand, capacity, or maximum.
  • If the download is slow but storage is available: consider the internet environment and allow for transfer time rather than assuming more storage will help.

Storage is a conditional fix, not a general eShop remedy. A card is relevant only when the console lacks enough room for the download or its update. Before spending money, check whether clearing space addresses the shortfall and confirm compatibility for the particular console model; do not choose a card based on an assumed universal capacity or brand recommendation.

Samsung microSD Express Card – 256GB for Nintendo Switch™ 2
  • Nintendo Switch 2 uses a new standard of expandable memory card called microSD Express (sold separately). This kind of memory card is needed for faster access speeds and to ensure games will run smoothly.
  • Please note: Nintendo Switch 2 is only compatible with microSD Express cards. If the microSD cards you have used for Nintendo Switch do not support microSD Express standards, you cannot use them with Nintendo Switch 2.

If you paid but the game or add-on is missing

Do not buy the same item again until you verify which Nintendo Account made the purchase and whether the transaction completed. Nintendo says purchases are associated with the account that made them. Check the purchase email or that account’s purchase history, then use the current redownload route for your region and console.

Use Virtual Game Cards for the current Japanese support flow

Nintendo’s Japanese support guidance says that, since April 30, 2025, purchased games and add-ons are redownloaded from Virtual Game Cards rather than from Nintendo eShop. This is a dated change in Nintendo Japan’s guidance; confirm the applicable instructions in the official support flow for your region and console model instead of assuming every region has identical steps.

When purchase history does not show the item

Check that you are looking at the Nintendo Account used at checkout, not simply the account currently active on the console. Compare the account’s purchase history with the confirmation email. If the records do not establish that the purchase completed, or the item remains unavailable after following the relevant redownload instructions, contact Nintendo Support before paying again.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Think of purchase verification and redownloading as separate checks. A confirmation email or purchase-history entry helps establish which account made the purchase; the applicable redownload route is a further step and can differ by region and console model. If you find no record, do not treat the game’s absence from the console as proof that you should immediately pay again. Resolve the transaction status with Nintendo or the relevant provider first.

If a purchase is rejected

First distinguish a purchase failure from a download problem. If payment was not completed, there may be no purchased title to redownload. Check the exact payment error and any account restrictions rather than repeating the payment or attributing the failure to the bank without evidence.

Nintendo’s Japan support information says account purchase restrictions can block paid products and some additions of funds. The specific payment errors, account rules, and provider behavior depend on region and payment method. A Japanese support rule should not be applied automatically to accounts in other countries.

  • If the payment appears to have completed, check the account purchase history and confirmation email before attempting another purchase.

The symptom alone does not tell you whether an account restriction, a payment-processing issue, or another condition stopped checkout. Match the exact message to local support guidance first. If the transaction may have completed despite an error, verify its status before making another attempt so you do not mistake a missing download for a failed purchase.

If a download or prepaid code is rejected

For a code error, check that the code is for the intended product and is valid for the account’s region. Region rules are not universal. Nintendo Japan’s support guidance says some Japan-issued codes may require the Nintendo Account country/region to be set to Japan. That is a Japan-specific rule, not a blanket rule for all codes or all regions.

  1. Identify what kind of code you have. Use the support guidance for a download code or prepaid code, as appropriate.
  2. Check the exact displayed error. If the message indicates a communication or maintenance issue, follow that code’s server-status instructions before diagnosing a region problem.
  3. Check the product and account region. Compare the code’s intended region with the Nintendo Account country/region and consult the local Nintendo Support instructions.
  4. Wait out maintenance when indicated. For error 2813-9200 during download-code redemption, check service status and retry after maintenance ends.

If the code remains rejected, use the support page for the exact code and region. Do not try account workarounds based on a rule documented only for another country.

Code troubleshooting has two separate questions: is the code being accepted by the service at this moment, and does the code match the product and account region? A maintenance or communication error points first to service status and that code’s instructions; a region issue calls for local account-and-code guidance. Do not infer a region mismatch solely because redemption failed.

Use the first check that matches the event, then move to another branch only if the evidence points there. For example, a missing item after an apparently completed payment calls for account and transaction verification before download troubleshooting; an error while redeeming a code during maintenance calls for waiting and retrying after service resumes, not changing payment settings.

When to contact Nintendo Support

Contact Nintendo Support when the instructions for the displayed code do not resolve the issue, when a communication error continues after the recommended connection tests, or when purchase history and transaction confirmation do not clarify whether an item was bought. Provide the code and message, console model, account region, the action that triggered the error, and the troubleshooting steps you have already tried. This lets support address the specific case without relying on guesses about the network, payment provider, or account.

Frequently Asked Questions

What should I do first when Nintendo eShop shows an error?

Record the full code and message, plus whether you were opening the store, purchasing, redeeming a code, downloading, or redownloading. Search Nintendo Support for that exact code and follow its instructions for your console and account region; fixes for one code may not apply to another.

What does error 2813-9200 mean when I redeem a download code?

Nintendo identifies error 2813-9200 during download-code redemption with eShop server maintenance. Check Nintendo network status and try again after maintenance ends. If there is no notice and the error persists, follow the code-specific guidance and wait before retrying.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Why does my download stop when I play a game?

Nintendo notes that some software pauses downloads while it is running. Confirm internet access, close the running software, then check User Settings for Update Download Progress. Restart the console if needed, and check storage if the download still will not proceed.

Should I buy a microSD card to fix an eShop error?

Only if available storage is insufficient for the download or update. Downloads need room in system memory or on a microSD card, and update data may require extra space. A card will not resolve a service, account, payment, or network error; verify compatibility for your console model before buying.

I paid, but the game is missing. Should I purchase it again?

Not until you verify the Nintendo Account used for the transaction and check that account’s purchase history or confirmation email. Purchases are associated with the account that made them. Follow the current redownload instructions for your region and model; Nintendo Japan’s guidance says Virtual Game Cards have been the redownload route for purchased games and add-ons there since April 30, 2025.

Can a Nintendo download code be rejected because of region?

It can depend on the code and region. Nintendo Japan says some Japan-issued codes may require an account country/region set to Japan, but that is not a universal rule. Check the exact error and consult Nintendo Support for the code’s region rather than applying another country’s rule.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

What if my eShop purchase is declined?

Check the exact checkout error and local Nintendo Support guidance, including whether an account purchase restriction applies. Rules and payment-provider behavior vary by region and payment method. Do not assume the bank refused payment unless the provider confirms it, and verify transaction status before trying again.

The Bottom Line

Match the remedy to the exact error, failed action, console, and account region. Check service status for communication or maintenance errors; close running software and refresh a paused download; verify storage only when space is short; and confirm the purchasing account before trying to buy a missing item again. When the code-specific steps do not resolve the issue, contact Nintendo Support with the code and what you have already tested.
