If your Nintendo 64 controller is not working with Nintendo Switch Online, first confirm it is Nintendo model HAC-043 and that you are using it with the Nintendo 64 – Nintendo Switch Online library. Then update the game software and console, restart, check charge and pairing, and use the controller’s SYNC button to reset its wireless connection. For a drifting or unresponsive stick, calibrate it; if trouble remains across compatible games, Nintendo recommends service rather than assuming a replacement will fix it.
Check compatibility before troubleshooting
Look at the label on the back of the controller and confirm the model is HAC-043. Nintendo designed this accessory for the Nintendo 64 – Nintendo Switch Online classic-game library. It may work for Switch menus or other games, but Nintendo does not guarantee that every game feature or in-game option will be supported. If the problem happens in just one non-N64 game, that may be a compatibility limitation rather than a fault. See Nintendo’s guidance on using the N64 controller.

Also check the game-selection screen: when two N64 controllers are connected, only player one can navigate that menu. A controller that cannot move through the selection screen may not be defective.
Fix connection, button, or input-lag problems
- Update the N64 software. Install any available update for Nintendo 64 – Nintendo Switch Online before launching a game.
- Update and restart the console. Install any available Nintendo Switch system update. If the system is already current, restart the console.
- Check charge and pairing. From the HOME Menu, open Controllers to check the controller’s approximate battery charge. The console must be powered on to pair; it cannot pair while asleep. Follow the on-screen controller pairing flow in the Controllers menu. Nintendo’s N64 controller pairing guide has the steps.
- Reset the wireless connection. Press the controller’s SYNC button once, then press another controller button to power it on again. Nintendo identifies SYNC as the button for pairing and resetting the wireless connection; see its N64 controller diagram.
- Re-pair if the issue persists. Nintendo’s troubleshooting guidance includes deleting wireless-controller pairing information and pairing controllers again. This affects other wireless controllers too, so you may need to pair those again.
For button problems and input lag, follow Nintendo’s button and input-lag troubleshooting steps. If a particular button remains faulty after these checks, use Nintendo support for your country to arrange service.

Calibrate a stick that drifts or responds incorrectly
- Pair and power on the controller.
- Open the console’s stick-calibration instructions and follow the on-screen prompts.
- If calibration does not solve the problem, press SYNC once, power the controller on again with another button, and retry calibration.
- If calibration succeeds but the stick still behaves incorrectly in one game, test a different compatible game. The controller may not support that game or feature.

Reduce wireless interference
If the controller disconnects or responds slowly, move the console closer to it. Avoid placing the console behind a TV or beneath metal. Nintendo also recommends keeping it about three to four feet from wireless speakers, cordless phones, and similar devices. Retest after changing the placement, and compare the result in another compatible game. Nintendo’s input-lag guidance and stick troubleshooting page cover these checks.

When to seek service
If a specific button or the stick still fails after updates, reconnection, calibration where relevant, and interference checks, follow Nintendo’s service guidance for your region. A different or replacement controller is not the first fix for ordinary pairing, charge, update, calibration, or wireless-interference problems. Consider a Nintendo Switch N64 controller HAC-043 only if you need the intended accessory because yours is missing, damaged, or not the correct model; persistent controller-specific faults should be assessed through Nintendo support.
