How to Fix Nginx Basic Auth Returning 404 Not Found

A 404 without an Nginx Basic Auth prompt usually means another location handled the request. Diagnose location precedence, inheritance, regex overrides, file paths, and password-file permissions with precise curl tests and configuration fixes.
Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

If Nginx returns 404 Not Found without showing a login prompt, the request usually did not reach the auth_basic directives you configured. Most often, a different location block—commonly a regular-expression PHP or API block—won location selection, or the request reached the protected block but the requested file does not exist under its root or alias.

Use nginx -T to inspect the effective configuration, identify the block that serves the failing URL, and test it first without credentials. An unauthenticated request to a correctly protected location should return 401 Unauthorized; a 404 after valid credentials points to a separate file-path problem.

What a 404 instead of a password prompt means

Nginx Basic Authentication is enabled with two directives:

  • auth_basic "Realm name"; turns on the challenge and sets the text shown by clients.
  • auth_basic_user_file /etc/nginx/.htpasswd; identifies the password file.

For a request that reaches a location where both directives are active, Nginx performs access checks before serving the content. A client with no credentials should therefore receive 401 Unauthorized and a WWW-Authenticate header, not an immediate 404. This ordering follows Nginx’s request-processing phases; the official request-processing documentation explains how the selected location is remembered before later processing (nginx request processing documentation).

A 404 without a challenge narrows the diagnosis:

Observed response Most likely meaning Next check
401 without credentials The request reached a location where Basic Auth is enabled. Authenticate, then investigate any subsequent status.
404 without credentials A different location handled the request, or a public location is serving it. Dump the effective configuration and trace location selection.
401 without credentials, 404 with valid credentials Authentication works; content lookup failed. Check root, alias, try_files, and the actual file path.
403 after authentication The file or directory may exist but be inaccessible. Check filesystem permissions and directory traversal rights.

The distinction matters: adding more password-file directives will not repair a 404 caused by a missing file, and changing try_files will not make a request protected if another location block wins.

How Nginx chooses the location—and loses your auth settings

Location matching is the most common reason a seemingly protected URL returns 404. Nginx first finds the longest matching prefix location and remembers it. It then evaluates regular-expression locations in configuration-file order; the first matching regular expression wins. A prefix marked ^~ prevents that regular-expression search. These rules are documented in Nginx’s request-processing guide.

Prefix locations are not automatically authoritative

Consider this configuration:

server {
    listen 80;
    server_name example.com;

    location /private/ {
        auth_basic "Members";
        auth_basic_user_file /etc/nginx/.htpasswd;
        root /var/www/site;
    }

    location ~ .php$ {
        include fastcgi_params;
        fastcgi_pass unix:/run/php/php-fpm.sock;
    }
}

A request for /private/report.html matches the /private/ prefix and is challenged. A request for /private/index.php also matches the prefix, but it matches the later ~ .php$ expression. That regex location handles the request and does not inherit the authentication directives from the unrelated prefix block. The result can be a public PHP handler, a 404 from the handler, or another response that looks like Basic Auth is broken.

A reported Habr Q&A case describes this pattern: authentication worked on a directory URL but not on a PHP URL because a separate PHP regex block took over. The report’s proposed fixes were to repeat the authentication directives in that regex block or move them to a broader context (Habr Q&A report). Treat that as a user-reported case, while the matching rules themselves are defined by Nginx’s documentation.

Inspect every candidate block

Do not rely on the file you remember editing. Run:

sudo nginx -T

This prints the complete, expanded configuration, including files loaded through include. Search the output for:

  • The exact failing URI, such as location /private/ or location /api/.
  • Every location ~ and location ~* expression that could match the suffix, especially .php$, static-file expressions, and API regexes.
  • All occurrences of auth_basic, auth_basic_user_file, and auth_basic off.
  • The root, alias, try_files, proxy, or FastCGI directives in the winning block.

The output is the effective configuration Nginx loaded, rather than a partial site file. If an included file defines a regex location after your prefix, that block is part of the matching decision.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Fix 1: Put Basic Auth in the block that actually serves the URL

The safest local fix is to put both authentication directives in the location that handles the request. They are a pair: repeating only auth_basic without a valid auth_basic_user_file leaves the block incomplete.

Repeat the directives in a regex location

server {
    listen 80;
    server_name example.com;

    location /private/ {
        auth_basic "Members";
        auth_basic_user_file /etc/nginx/.htpasswd;
        root /var/www/site;
    }

    location ~ .php$ {
        auth_basic "Members";
        auth_basic_user_file /etc/nginx/.htpasswd;
        include fastcgi_params;
        fastcgi_param SCRIPT_FILENAME $document_root$fastcgi_script_name;
        fastcgi_pass unix:/run/php/php-fpm.sock;
    }
}

This protects every PHP request handled by that regex in the server, including PHP files below /private/. Be deliberate: if the regex is global, the repeated directives also protect PHP outside the intended directory. Narrow the expression or use a different layout if only one application area should require credentials.

Set authentication at server scope

When nearly everything in a virtual host should be private, put the directives directly inside server:

    }

    location /healthz {
        auth_basic off;
        return 200 "okn";
    }
}

Authentication then applies to locations that inherit the server-level settings, while explicitly public locations can disable it. The module documentation states: “The special value off cancels the effect of the auth_basic directive inherited from the previous configuration level” (ngx_http_auth_basic_module documentation).

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Because inheritance is evaluated per configuration block, a location that defines its own auth_basic replaces the inherited value. Keep auth_basic_user_file in that block as well. Do not assume a location’s own authentication setting will merge with the file setting from another location.

Use ^~ only when its matching behavior is intended

If a directory prefix must always win over regular-expression locations, you can write:

location ^~ /private/ {
    auth_basic "Members";
    auth_basic_user_file /etc/nginx/.htpasswd;
    root /var/www/site;
}

The ^~ modifier stops regex evaluation after the prefix match. This can prevent an unrelated PHP or asset regex from bypassing the directory’s authentication, but it also changes which handler serves matching files. Verify that PHP, caching, and static-file behavior still works before using it as a blanket fix. Explicitly protecting the winning regex block is usually clearer when that regex is required.

Fix 2: Check inheritance and auth_basic off

Directives do not inherit across sibling locations. A configuration such as this does not make /api/ inherit settings from /private/:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
location /private/ {
    auth_basic "Members";
    auth_basic_user_file /etc/nginx/.htpasswd;
}

location /api/ {
    proxy_pass http://backend;
}

If /api/ needs protection, configure it directly or move the directives to server or http scope where appropriate.

Conversely, a public location can use auth_basic off; when authentication is inherited from a parent context. An Nginx Trac ticket titled “auth_basic cannot be overwritten from other context” reports a case where disabling inherited authentication did not behave as expected (Trac ticket #2013). The ticket does not establish that every Nginx version has this defect. If off still produces a prompt, record the exact Nginx version, inspect the fully expanded output from nginx -T, and test whether another matching location or included file is re-enabling authentication.

Fix 3: Separate authentication from a real file-path 404

Once the unauthenticated request returns 401, Basic Auth is doing its job. A 404 after credentials usually comes from content resolution.

Understand root versus alias

With root, Nginx appends the complete request URI to the root directory. For example:

location /private/ {
    root /var/www/site;
}

A request for /private/report.html is looked up at /var/www/site/private/report.html. If the file is actually at /var/www/site/report.html, that configuration returns 404.

alias replaces the matching location prefix instead:

location /private/ {
    alias /var/www/private-files/;
}

Here, /private/report.html maps to /var/www/private-files/report.html. The trailing slash conventions matter, and an alias combined with regular expressions needs a capture used in the alias path. Check the filesystem path you intend, not merely the URL spelling. The core-module reference documents the path directives and their resolution rules (ngx_http_core_module documentation).

Check try_files after authentication

A common front-controller configuration is:

location /private/ {
    auth_basic "Members";
    auth_basic_user_file /etc/nginx/.htpasswd;
    root /var/www/site;
    try_files $uri $uri/ =404;
}

try_files checks candidate paths and returns the final status when none exists. It does not create or validate the Basic Auth challenge. If the request is authenticated and still returns 404, verify that the file or directory exists below the configured root and that the URI-to-path mapping is what you expect. The directive’s behavior is described in the core-module documentation (Worth Installing

Check index and trailing-slash behavior

A request for a directory may be redirected to a slash-terminated URI before Nginx looks for an index file. Test both forms when diagnosing a report that mentions only one URL:

curl -I http://example.com/private
curl -I http://example.com/private/

Then check whether the configured index file exists in the mapped directory. A missing index can produce a 404 even though the directory itself is present and authentication succeeded.

Fix 4: Verify the password file and worker permissions

A missing or unreadable password file normally produces an authentication error rather than the location-selection 404 described above, but it must still be checked when Basic Auth is being repaired.

Confirm the file and its format

sudo ls -l /etc/nginx/.htpasswd
sudo head -n 1 /etc/nginx/.htpasswd

The file should contain a username followed by a supported password hash. Create or update an entry with the system’s htpasswd utility, for example:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
sudo htpasswd /etc/nginx/.htpasswd alice

Use -c only when creating a new file; it replaces an existing file and can remove other users. Keep the file outside the publicly served document root so it cannot be downloaded as a static file.

Check the Nginx worker account

On Debian- and Ubuntu-family installations the worker commonly runs as www-data; on RHEL- and CentOS-family installations it commonly runs as nginx. Confirm the actual account in the top-level user directive and make sure that account can traverse each parent directory and read the password file:

sudo namei -l /etc/nginx/.htpasswd
sudo -u www-data test -r /etc/nginx/.htpasswd && echo readable

Replace www-data with the account shown by your configuration. Avoid making the file world-readable simply to silence an error; grant the minimum directory and file permissions needed by the worker.

Read the error log

Inspect the error log immediately after a request:

sudo tail -f /var/log/nginx/error.log

Path, permission, and upstream failures are often explicit there. A log entry naming a missing script or file supports a content-path diagnosis; an entry about opening the password file points to credentials-file access instead.

A repeatable diagnostic procedure

  1. Capture the exact URL and status. Include the scheme, host, path, query string, and whether the response is from HTTP or HTTPS. A different server block may be selected for another hostname or port.
  2. Test anonymously.
    curl -i http://example.com/private/report.html

    For a protected location, look for HTTP/1.1 401 (or HTTP/2 401) and a WWW-Authenticate header. If you receive 404, continue with location analysis rather than changing the password file.

  3. Test with credentials.
    curl -i -u alice:correct-password http://example.com/private/report.html

    A 200 indicates both authentication and content lookup succeeded. A 404 here means authentication passed but the file or route was not found. Never paste a real password into shell history on a shared machine; use an interactive prompt or a temporary test account when necessary.

  4. Dump the loaded configuration.
    sudo nginx -T

    Find the server selected for the hostname, the longest prefix, matching regex locations, and any ^~ modifier. Confirm where the authentication directives are effective.

  5. Map the URI to disk or upstream. For static content, calculate the path produced by root or alias. For PHP or proxy locations, determine whether the 404 is generated by Nginx, PHP-FPM, or the upstream application.
  6. Validate syntax before applying changes.
    sudo nginx -t

    Do not reload if this reports an error. Fix the named file and line first.

  7. Reload and retest both cases.
    sudo systemctl reload nginx
    curl -i http://example.com/private/report.html
    curl -i -u alice:correct-password http://example.com/private/report.html

    Keep the error log open while testing so a new failure can be correlated with the request.

Common configuration mistakes and their remedies

Only the directory URL is protected

Symptom: /private/ prompts, but /private/index.php returns 404 or no prompt.

Cause: A ~ .php$ location won after the /private/ prefix.

Remedy: Add both auth directives to the PHP block, move authentication to server scope, or deliberately use a ^~ prefix if the directory must bypass regex handling.

The password file was edited, but the response never changed

Symptom: Requests still return the same 404 after users or passwords are changed.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Cause: The request is not reaching any authenticated location, so the password file is irrelevant to that response.

Remedy: Prove the status with an anonymous curl request and inspect nginx -T before editing credentials again.

auth_basic off is in the expected public block, but a prompt remains

Symptom: A health or assets location still asks for credentials.

Possible causes: The request is matching another location, the effective configuration differs from the file being edited, or the Nginx version exhibits the inheritance behavior reported in Trac ticket #2013.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Remedy: Confirm the server and location selected for the exact host and URI, check included files in nginx -T, run nginx -t, reload, and retest. Record the Nginx version if the behavior persists.

A valid login is followed by a 404

Symptom: The browser prompts, accepts credentials, then displays 404.

Cause: Authentication succeeded; the mapped file, index, route, script, or upstream endpoint is missing.

Remedy: Inspect root/alias, try_files, index settings, FastCGI script paths, and upstream logs. Do not remove Basic Auth to solve this second-stage failure.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Security and maintenance checks after the fix

  • Use HTTPS before sending Basic Auth credentials. Basic Auth encodes credentials but does not encrypt them.
  • Use a realm string that identifies the protected application without exposing secrets. Nginx configuration examples should use straight double quotes, such as auth_basic "Members";.
  • Keep .htpasswd outside the document root and restrict its permissions.
  • Review every regex location when adding a new protected prefix. A later include can silently introduce a handler that bypasses the prefix’s settings.
  • Protect only the paths that need it. Applying server-wide authentication and then forgetting an auth_basic off exception can break monitoring, static assets, or public callbacks.
  • Retest after Nginx upgrades if you depend on unusual inheritance or override behavior; the documented directive semantics and the reported edge case should be verified against the version actually deployed.

When to consult the reported cases

Community reports can help you recognize a symptom, but they are not substitutes for the effective configuration and logs on your server. The DigitalOcean Community thread titled “NGINX auth_basic is giving me a ‘404 not found’ message” (thread) and an AWS re:Post question about an API 404 (thread) illustrate that similar status codes can arise in different deployments. Other discussions, including a Raspberry Pi forum thread (thread), do not provide a generally applicable fix in the available material.

Use the official module and request-processing references for directive semantics, then use your own nginx -T output, status tests, and logs to establish which branch applies.
