Repair common Windows errors and clear accumulated junk for a smoother, more stable PC - no reinstall needed.Free scan · no reinstallIf Netflix looks dim in a browser, first raise the display brightness and check whether HDR is enabled. On Windows, HDR and SDR settings can make some apps look darker than others. If those checks do not help, compare the same scene in another browser that Netflix supports on your operating system, keeping the display and settings unchanged.
Start with the display brightness
Raise the brightness using your laptop’s display controls or your monitor’s on-screen menu. If the display has an energy-saving or similar mode that visibly dims the picture, turn it off temporarily and check Netflix again. The control varies by device; Netflix advises contacting the device maker for help with device-specific settings. Its general guidance is to check brightness and HDR settings when a show or movie is not bright enough: Netflix Help Center: video is too dark.

Work out whether the issue affects one title or everything
Play the same scene while changing just one condition at a time. This helps distinguish a title-specific difference from a display, HDR, or browser issue without assuming the cause.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
- Check another Netflix title in the same browser.
- If you use more than one display, compare playback on each one.
- On Windows, compare HDR on and off, if your display supports HDR.
- If you are using a laptop, compare playback while plugged in and on battery.
Keep the scene, browser, and other settings the same for each comparison. A difference narrows down where to investigate; it does not by itself prove what caused the dimness.

On Windows, check HDR and SDR settings
Windows’ HDR behavior is conditional on the display, system settings, playback software, graphics capability, and—in some cases—required codecs. Microsoft also notes that some SDR apps can look darker on an HDR display than other SDR apps. So a dim picture with HDR enabled does not necessarily mean the browser or Netflix video is defective.
- Open Settings and select System > Display.
- Select the display showing Netflix, then open its HDR settings. Check whether HDR video streaming is supported and enabled for that display.
- If Netflix looks dim only with Windows HDR enabled, try the applicable SDR/HDR content brightness control. The setting and its effect can vary by Windows version and display.
- If you can, compare the picture on an SDR display. After changing a setting, restart playback—or the browser if needed—so the video stream can adjust.
Microsoft cautions that adjusting SDR content brightness can affect detail in dark scenes. Its Windows troubleshooting also notes that some built-in displays may require full-screen playback for HDR video, that battery settings can affect HDR playback, and that moving a stream to a display not optimized for HDR may switch it to SDR. If you move playback between displays, restarting the video can help the stream selection update. See Microsoft’s Windows HDR video guidance.

Confirm HDR playback requirements before changing more settings
Do not force HDR as a brightness fix. Netflix lists prerequisites for HDR playback on Windows, including Windows 11, a supported browser or app, compatible graphics, an HDR-capable display, and HEVC on some systems. Netflix also specifies a qualifying plan and playback-quality setting. Windows has a separate setting for HDR video streaming, and battery behavior can matter. The requirements are system-dependent; check Netflix’s Windows computer requirements for the current details.

A browser’s listed resolution limit does not establish whether a particular scene should look bright or whether HDR is active.

Compare supported browsers as a diagnostic
If the picture remains dim, play the same scene in another browser that Netflix currently supports for your operating system. Keep the same computer, display, and relevant settings. If one browser looks different, that points to a browser or playback-path difference, but it does not identify the underlying cause.
Netflix’s supported browsers and maximum resolutions vary by operating system and change over time. Its current support page lists minimum browser versions and platform-specific limits: Netflix system requirements for HTML5 playback and Silverlight. Check the entry for your platform rather than treating one browser as a universal fix. Resolution limits alone do not explain dimness.

Update software, then get device-specific help
If the issue persists across supported browsers or settings, install available updates for the browser, operating system, and graphics driver from their official sources. If HDR requirements are unclear or the display behaves unexpectedly, ask the computer or display maker to confirm that the device meets the relevant requirements. Netflix also directs Windows users to the computer or display manufacturer for help checking system and display compatibility; you can contact Netflix support if the problem remains.
