How to Fix Netflix Not Working on Your TV, Phone, or Browser

Find the cause of Netflix not working by testing the affected device, other apps and your home network, then follow precise TV, Android, iPhone, iPad and browser fixes.
Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Start by finding out whether Netflix is failing on one device or whether your internet connection is failing more broadly. Try another app on the same device, check another device on the same network, and note Netflix’s exact message or error code. If only Netflix fails, use the platform-specific steps below. If several devices or internet apps fail, troubleshoot the modem, router, Wi-Fi or wired connection before changing Netflix settings.

Identify the problem before changing anything

Netflix connection messages such as “We’re unable to connect you to Netflix,” “Failed to connect to Netflix. Please check your device’s network connection,” and “Not connected to the Internet” can have different causes. Netflix says a connection message typically means the device cannot reach the Netflix service, but a damaged app installation, outdated software or lost device compatibility can produce similar symptoms.

  1. Try another internet app on the affected device. Open a news site, music service or another streaming app. If those fail too, the device’s network connection is the first suspect.
  2. Test another device on the same connection. For example, check Netflix or another website on a phone using the same Wi-Fi as the TV. If multiple devices fail, investigate the home network or internet service.
  3. Write down the exact Netflix wording or code. Search that wording in the Netflix Help Center rather than applying a generic fix to every error.
  4. Check whether the device uses Wi-Fi or an Ethernet cable. This detail matters when you contact your internet provider or the device manufacturer.

Apply these steps in order. Retry Netflix after each one so you know which action solved the problem.

1. Fully power-cycle the TV or player

Turn the TV or streaming player off completely, not merely into standby. Netflix’s general TV guidance says to leave it off for 15 seconds, then turn it on and try Netflix again. If the device has a physical power switch, use it. Otherwise, use the remote’s power control and disconnect the power cable only if the device does not shut down normally.

2. Test the connection from the device

Open another app or the TV’s built-in network test. Confirm that the device is connected to the intended Wi-Fi network and that it has not lost its Ethernet connection. A TV can display a home screen normally even when its internet session has expired, so a successful network test is more useful than simply seeing a Wi-Fi icon.

3. Restart the modem and router

  1. Turn off the TV or streaming player.
  2. Unplug the modem and router from power for 30 seconds.
  3. Reconnect the modem and router.
  4. Wait about one minute for the equipment to reconnect. Some combinations take longer.
  5. Turn the TV or player back on and open Netflix.

If your internet equipment is a single combined gateway, unplug that unit for the same 30-second interval. Do not repeatedly unplug it while its indicator lights are still completing startup.

4. Reload Netflix, reset the app or sign in again

Some Netflix error screens include More Details and then options such as Reload Netflix, Sign out or Reset. Choose the option shown on your device; menu names differ among televisions and players. If you sign out, make sure you know the account email address and password before proceeding.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

5. Check compatibility on older equipment

Some televisions and streaming devices made before 2015 may no longer support Netflix. This is different from a temporary Wi-Fi failure: the TV may still connect to the internet while its Netflix application is no longer compatible. Check the current Netflix device-compatibility information and your exact model number. Also verify that the TV has the connection your replacement device needs, such as an available HDMI port and suitable power.

A supported streaming device can be a practical workaround only after you have confirmed that the television’s Netflix compatibility is the actual problem. Netflix lists the Amazon Fire TV/Stick family among supported TV streaming-device families, but purchasing a player will not repair a faulty router, account problem or internet outage. Verify current model support before buying because availability and compatibility change.

6. Escalate with the exact code

If Netflix still fails, use the displayed code or full sentence in the Netflix Help Center. Contact Netflix when the account or service appears to be the issue; contact the TV or player manufacturer when the device cannot update, connect or launch other apps. Contact your internet provider when several devices or services fail on the same connection.

Fix Netflix on an Android phone or tablet

Android menu names vary by manufacturer and Android version. Start with actions that preserve your downloads and sign-in, then move to app data removal only when necessary.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

1. Restart the device and test the connection

Restart the phone or tablet, reconnect to Wi-Fi if necessary, and try Netflix again. Test another app or website on the same connection. If Wi-Fi fails but mobile data works, the home network is more likely to be responsible; if both fail, continue with device and account checks.

2. Update Android and Netflix

Install any available Android system update and update Netflix through the device’s app store. An outdated operating system can prevent the current app from working correctly, especially after a service-side change.

3. Clear Netflix’s stored data only after the simple checks

Clearing app data removes Netflix downloads and signs you out. Have the account credentials available first. On many Android devices, the path is:

  1. Open Settings.
  2. Choose Apps, Applications or App management.
  3. Select Netflix.
  4. Open Storage or Storage & cache.
  5. Tap Clear storage, Clear data or the equivalent, then confirm.
  6. Open Netflix, sign in and test playback.

If your manufacturer uses different labels, search Settings for “Netflix” or “app storage.” Do not confuse clearing the cache with clearing all data: cache clearing is less disruptive, while clearing data removes downloads and the saved session.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

4. Reinstall Netflix if clearing data did not help

Uninstall Netflix, restart the device, and install it again from the official app store. Reinstallation also removes downloaded shows and movies and requires you to sign in again. Use this step only when you can recover the account credentials and when the earlier connection checks have passed.

5. Restart the home network

If Netflix fails on Wi-Fi, power-cycle the modem and router for 30 seconds, reconnect them, wait for internet service to return, and retry. A phone that works on mobile data but not Wi-Fi provides a useful clue to give your internet provider.

Fix Netflix on an iPhone or iPad

Test the connection first

For the message “Failed to connect to Netflix. Please check your device’s network connection,” Netflix recommends testing the connection at fast.com. Open the site in Safari while connected to the same network you use for Netflix. If it cannot load, restart the modem and router and test again.

Check cellular-data permission

If you are using mobile service rather than Wi-Fi, confirm that Netflix is allowed to use cellular data:

  1. Open Settings.
  2. Tap Cellular or Mobile Data.
  3. Scroll to the app list.
  4. Make sure the switch beside Netflix is enabled.

The exact label depends on the iOS or iPadOS language and version. If the switch is off, Netflix may work on Wi-Fi but fail whenever the device uses cellular service.

Restart the network and the device

Restart the iPhone or iPad, then restart the home network if Wi-Fi remains unreliable. Avoid deleting the app until you have checked the connection and cellular-data permission; deleting it can remove downloaded titles and require another sign-in.

Use downloads as a temporary offline option

Netflix’s cited iPhone and iPad guidance says downloaded titles can be watched offline while you remain signed in. This helps when you need to watch an existing download during a temporary connection problem, but it does not restore online browsing or playback.

Fix Netflix in a web browser

Browser playback depends on both the browser and the operating system. Netflix supports computer use through browsers including Chrome, Edge, Firefox, Opera and Safari, but minimum versions, operating-system requirements and maximum resolution vary by platform. Those requirements can change, so use Netflix’s live browser and system-requirements page rather than relying on an old version number copied from another article.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

1. Update the browser and operating system

Install pending updates for the browser and the computer’s operating system, then restart the browser. A browser that opens ordinary websites can still be too old for Netflix playback.

2. Try a clean Netflix session

Open a private or incognito window and sign in to Netflix. If playback works there, an extension, corrupted site data or a stale session is likely involved. Disable extensions one at a time in a normal window, starting with ad blockers, privacy tools and video-download helpers, then clear Netflix site data if needed.

3. Confirm browser playback settings

Allow cookies and protected content for Netflix. Check that hardware acceleration, media permissions and sound output have not been disabled by a corporate policy or privacy setting. If only one browser fails, test another supported browser; if every browser fails on the same computer, test another network or device before reinstalling software.

4. Match the requirement to the symptom

  • The page will not load: check the network, DNS or browser extensions.
  • The page loads but video will not start: update the browser, allow protected content and test a private window.
  • Video starts but quality is limited: confirm the browser, operating system and plan support the resolution you expect; Netflix’s limits differ by platform.
  • An error code appears: search the complete code and wording in the Netflix Help Center.

Do not treat an old list of “minimum browser versions” as permanent. Netflix’s browser requirements page was not available for verification in the cited material, so exact version numbers should be checked live before troubleshooting a current computer.

When the internet provider is the right contact

Contact the internet provider when several household devices cannot reach websites or streaming services, when the modem repeatedly loses its connection, or when Netflix works on mobile data but not on the home network. Tell the provider:

  • Whether one device or several devices are affected.
  • Whether the affected device uses Wi-Fi or an Ethernet cable.
  • Whether other internet apps fail as well.
  • What the connection test at fast.com shows.
  • When the problem started and whether restarting the equipment helped temporarily.

Netflix recommends testing the connection directly to its service at fast.com before deciding that the issue is resolved. A successful test on one phone does not prove that a distant TV has a good connection; test the device that actually fails.

How to use an error message instead of guessing

Exact wording narrows the path. “We’re unable to connect you to Netflix” generally directs attention to the device’s route to Netflix, while “Failed to connect to Netflix. Please check your device’s network connection” points first to the connection test, cellular-data permission or home-network restart on an iPhone or iPad. A code that appears only on one television may instead require a device-specific reset or compatibility check.

Copy the message exactly, including punctuation and numbers. Search it in Netflix’s Help Center, then follow the instructions for your device type. If the Help Center directs you to contact the device maker, keep the model number and operating-system version ready.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Common mistakes that make troubleshooting slower

  • Restarting only the app: a modem or router fault remains active when the app is reopened.
  • Leaving a TV in standby: use a full 15-second power-off cycle so the device actually reloads its network and app state.
  • Clearing Android data too early: this removes downloads and signs you out; reserve it for after connection and update checks.
  • Assuming every device has the same menu: TV, Android, iOS and browser settings use different labels and paths.
  • Buying a streaming player for a network outage: a new player helps only when the existing TV lacks current Netflix support.
  • Using stale browser specifications: supported versions and resolution limits change; consult Netflix’s current requirements.
  • Reporting a general outage without local evidence: first test another device and fast.com so the provider or Netflix receives useful diagnostic information.

A short recovery checklist

  1. Record Netflix’s exact message or code.
  2. Test another app on the affected device.
  3. Test another device on the same network.
  4. Fully restart the TV, phone, tablet or computer.
  5. Restart the modem and router for 30 seconds, then wait for reconnection.
  6. On Android, clear app data or reinstall only after saving your credentials and accepting that downloads will be removed.
  7. On iPhone or iPad, test fast.com and confirm Netflix has cellular-data permission when using mobile service.
  8. On a browser, update the browser and operating system, test a private window and check protected-content settings.
  9. Check current compatibility for older TVs and players.
  10. Use the exact error in Netflix Help Center or contact the responsible provider or device maker.

Bottom line

Most Netflix failures become easier to solve once you separate a single-device app or compatibility problem from a wider network fault. Restart the affected device, verify the connection, restart the modem and router when necessary, and use the exact error wording to choose the next Netflix instruction. Clear app data or buy replacement hardware only when the evidence points to those specific causes.
