Buffering can come from an unstable connection, network congestion, outdated or incompatible software, or a problem limited to one device or title. Find out which scope applies before changing settings: try another title, another streaming service, and another supported device on the same network. Then work through the low-cost fixes below, saving resets and equipment changes for later.
First, find out what is affected
Note whether playback trouble affects one title, one streaming service, one device, or several devices and services on your home network. A single failed playback does not by itself prove that a service is down.

- Try a different show or film on the same service.
- Try another streaming service on the same device.
- If possible, test the affected service on another supported device connected to the same network.
If another device works on the same network, focus on the original device or app. If multiple devices struggle, focus on the network or the route to the service. HBO Max recommends testing another device to help distinguish a device problem from a network problem. HBO Max buffering help
Check the connection before changing devices
Run a speed test on the affected device if it supports one, or on a computer connected to the same network. A test is a snapshot: a good result does not rule out brief instability or congestion during playback.

HBO Max speed guidance
HBO Max says HD streaming requires a minimum download speed of 5 Mbps and recommends 50+ Mbps for its best 4K streaming experience. These are HBO Max’s figures, not universal thresholds or guarantees against buffering. HBO Max buffering help
Check access restrictions and connection type
On public Wi-Fi at a hotel, café, or school, ask the network administrator whether video services such as Netflix are blocked; do not try to bypass an organization’s restrictions. A mobile hotspot, cellular connection, or satellite connection may also be too slow or unstable for playback. Netflix provides connection guidance for these situations. Netflix buffering help

Restart and update the affected device
- Fully close the streaming app, reopen it, and try playback again.
- Restart the TV, streaming stick, console, phone, or tablet.
- Check for updates to both the streaming app and the device’s operating system. Confirm that the device is supported by the service.
- If only one device still has trouble, follow the service’s instructions for that device and platform. Avoid clearing app data or factory-resetting the device unless its instructions call for it.
Disney+ lists device compatibility and outdated app or system software among possible causes, and recommends confirming support and updates. If several devices struggle, restart the network and reduce congestion
- Pause other high-bandwidth activity, such as large downloads or other video streams, and retry playback.
- Restart the modem and router according to their manufacturer’s instructions. Netflix’s procedure is to unplug the modem and, if separate, the router for 30 seconds, then reconnect them.
- Wait for the modem and router to reconnect fully before testing again.
HBO Max also specifies a 30-second power interruption for network devices in its platform troubleshooting steps. Netflix buffering help HBO Max buffering help

Improve Wi-Fi or test a wired connection
- Move the streaming device closer to the router where practical.
- Place the router in an open, elevated location rather than on the floor, and keep it away from appliances and other sources of wireless interference.
- If both the router and streaming device have Ethernet ports, temporarily connect them by cable. This can help determine whether Wi-Fi is the weak link; it is not a guaranteed fix and is not a necessary purchase for every buffering problem.
Netflix recommends improving the router’s placement and reducing interference; HBO Max also includes a wired connection as a troubleshooting option where available. Netflix buffering help HBO Max buffering help
When to contact your ISP or streaming service
Contact your ISP if multiple devices continue to have trouble after restarting the network, especially if other internet activities are also unreliable. Netflix says the ISP can check for local outages, modem or router problems, and incorrect network settings. Be ready to say whether one or several devices are affected and whether the device uses Wi-Fi or Ethernet. Netflix buffering help
