Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsIf n98-magerun2 commands fail after an upgrade, first identify the exact command, error, tool version, Magento or Mage-OS version, PHP CLI version, and executable being run. There is no safe one-command fix without those details: a platform mismatch, PHP incompatibility, stale PHAR, proxied Magento command, or initialization error can look similar but needs a different remedy.
Collect the details that identify the failure
Before changing versions or dependencies, record the facts needed to locate the failing layer. Redact passwords, access tokens, customer data, and other secrets before sharing logs.

- The exact command and its complete error output or stack trace.
- The current working directory and Magento application root.
- The n98-magerun2 version and how it was installed: PHAR or Composer.
- The Magento or Adobe Commerce version, or the Mage-OS version.
- The PHP CLI version and the operating system.
These details matter because compatibility depends on both the platform and PHP, and an upgrade may not have replaced the executable your shell actually invokes.

Check which n98-magerun2 executable and PHP runtime run
n98-magerun2 is distributed as a PHAR and through Composer. If more than one copy is installed, upgrading one does not guarantee that your shell or automation uses it. Check the version and help output from the same command or path that produces the failure, then inspect your shell’s command resolution and confirm which PHP CLI binary is being used.
#1 Best Overall
For example, use the executable’s own version option and your shell’s path lookup (such as command -v n98-magerun2 on Unix-like shells) to compare the invoked path with the file you intended to update. If you run a PHAR directly, check that file; if you invoke a Composer-installed command, check that installation and its environment. The project documents its distribution and installation options in the official n98-magerun2 repository.
Match both platform and PHP to a compatible release
Do not choose a release based only on the Magento version or assume that the newest n98-magerun2 is right for every older installation. The official compatibility table treats platform and PHP compatibility as separate constraints and is the authoritative place to check current guidance.
| Platform or runtime | Guidance in the official compatibility table |
|---|---|
| Magento / Adobe Commerce 2.4.8+ or Mage-OS 1.2.x+ | n98-magerun2 v9.0.0 or later |
| Magento / Adobe Commerce 2.4.5–2.4.7 or Mage-OS 1.0–1.1.x | n98-magerun2 v8.0.0 or later |
| PHP 8.5 or 8.4 | n98-magerun2 v9.0.0 or later |
| PHP 8.3 or 8.2 | n98-magerun2 v8.0.0 or later |
| n98-magerun2 v10.0.0 | PHP 8.2 minimum |
| PHP 8.1 or lower | The table says to stay on the v9.x line |
| Older platform lines | Check the table for the stated last-compatible release |
These are version-specific recommendations from the live official table, not a guarantee that a release will fix every command failure. Check that table before changing the tool version, especially for older Magento or PHP environments; it may change as releases evolve. The documentation recommends the latest version for best support and recent features, while also documenting older lines that have their own last-compatible versions.

Determine whether the failing command is a proxy
Some n98-magerun2 commands proxy to Magento’s bin/magento. In the documented v7 behavior, adding -vvv prints the full underlying command, which helps distinguish an n98-magerun2 problem from a failure in the Magento command it invokes. Confirm that this option works in your installed release before relying on it.
Rank #3
- Run the failing proxied command with
-vvv, if supported by your installed version. - Read the emitted underlying command and identify the Magento command and arguments being run.
- Investigate that command’s own error, Magento context, and application state rather than treating the proxy as proof that all n98-magerun2 commands are broken.
The project’s v7 release article describes this debugging behavior. Because it documents v7, verify support and output in the release you have installed.
Separate Magento initialization errors from native command failures
If n98-magerun2-native commands work but Magento core commands fail, focus on Magento initialization, module loading, and dependency errors. A maintainer’s v7 release notes describe handling exceptions while loading Magento core commands so n98-magerun2 commands could remain available in a corrupt Magento environment. That is evidence that initialization is a distinct failure case—not proof that every failure has the same cause or remedy.
An older report involving Magento 2.3.0-alpha described an undefined-method fatal error during initialization with an older n98-magerun2 release. It illustrates how a platform change can expose a tool/framework incompatibility, but it does not establish a current fix or show that modern releases have the same problem. See the historical issue for its specific context.
Check release notes for the exact command and version range
Once you know the installed and target versions, review the official release history for changes between them. Look for a compatibility update or a fix naming the affected command or matching the error. The history includes examples such as a PHP fatal-error fix for composer:redeploy-base-packages and an MCP proxy command fix; neither should be assumed to apply unless your command and symptom match.
Quick Recap
Best Value
Use the error to choose the next step
- The reported tool version is not the one you upgraded: correct the executable path or update the PHAR or Composer installation that is actually invoked.
- The platform or PHP combination is outside the documented range: select a compatible n98-magerun2 line using both dimensions of the official matrix; do not update blindly.
- Verbose output reveals a failing
bin/magentocommand: investigate that command and its Magento context. - Only core commands fail during initialization: inspect Magento bootstrap, module loading, and dependency errors, using the exact stack trace to locate the problem.
- The versions appear compatible and no release note matches: keep the full error and environment details together. A precise diagnosis needs the exact command and redacted output; the topic alone does not establish a universal repair.
