How to Fix MySQL Failing to Start After a Database Crash

A crashed MySQL server usually recovers after one normal restart. This guide explains how to read the error log, protect the data directory, restore from backup with point-in-time recovery, and salvage readable data without deleting InnoDB files.
Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

If MySQL will not start after an unexpected shutdown, restart it once and read the complete error log before changing files. InnoDB normally performs crash recovery automatically: it reapplies committed changes from its logs and rolls back transactions that were uncommitted when the server stopped. If the log instead reports corruption, missing tablespaces, redo-log incompatibility or an I/O failure, stop trying random repairs, preserve the data directory, and recover to a clean instance from a known-good backup when possible.

The procedure below separates ordinary recovery from data salvage and from a full backup restore, so you can choose the least risky path for the evidence in your log.

What MySQL does after an unexpected shutdown

InnoDB is designed to recover from a crash during startup. The Oracle MySQL 8.0 manual states that “to recover from an unexpected MySQL server exit, the only requirement is to restart the MySQL server.” During that restart, InnoDB checks its redo logs, performs a roll-forward of committed work, and rolls back uncommitted transactions that existed when the crash occurred.

This process is not the same as repairing a damaged data directory. A normal crash leaves the files internally consistent enough for InnoDB to replay its recovery information. Physical corruption, failed storage, deleted files or an incompatible redo configuration can prevent that process from completing. The startup error log is the authority for deciding which situation you have.

First response: preserve evidence and make one normal start attempt

  1. Stop an automatic restart loop. Pause the service manager or repeated manual starts long enough to preserve the error log and the current data directory. Every attempt can add new messages that obscure the first failure.
  2. Confirm the environment. Check that the filesystem containing the configured data directory is mounted and writable, that the volume has free space, and that the MySQL service account still has the required permissions. Verify the configured datadir; inspecting a different directory can lead you to “repair” the wrong instance.
  3. Try the normal service command once. Use the service command appropriate to your operating system and installation. Do not add recovery options on this first attempt.
  4. Capture the entire startup output. Save messages from the beginning of the attempt through the final failure or successful “ready for connections” message. On Windows, starting the server with mysqld --console when appropriate displays diagnostics directly in the console.
  5. Record what changed. Note the shutdown time, operating-system events, storage alerts, recent configuration changes and any maintenance that ran immediately before the crash. This context helps distinguish a one-time power loss from a continuing disk problem.

Do not delete files, rename the data directory or repeatedly kill the process while you are still collecting this evidence. If the server starts and remains available, take a fresh backup before investigating the original cause.

Read the error log before choosing a remedy

Look for the first InnoDB or storage error, not merely the final “server shutdown” line. A later message may be a consequence of an earlier missing file, permission failure or I/O error. Group the result into one of these paths.

Path A: ordinary crash recovery is running

Messages describing log checks, roll-forward, page recovery or transaction rollback generally indicate that InnoDB is doing its normal work. Leave the server running and allow the process to finish. A rollback can take substantially longer than the transaction originally ran because InnoDB must examine and undo the affected changes; there is no universal recovery-time figure.

Watch the error log for progress and for a final successful startup. Avoid force-killing the process simply because it appears idle. If the log changes from recovery messages to a specific error, reassess using that new error rather than assuming the operation is still healthy.

Path B: the server fails before recovery can complete

Errors about missing tablespaces, an inability to open a file, redo-log mismatch, corrupted pages, checksum failures or storage I/O indicate that ordinary recovery cannot safely finish. Treat the existing directory as evidence. Do not “fix” the message by removing the file named in it.

An I/O error can be a symptom of a failing disk, a detached volume, a full filesystem or a hardware or operating-system problem. Resolve the underlying availability issue only after preserving a copy or storage snapshot. If the same read fails repeatedly, continued starts can make a deteriorating device worse.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Path C: the service exits without a clear InnoDB explanation

Check the service manager’s status and logs as well as the MySQL error log. Verify the executable and configuration file used by the service, the data-directory path, permissions and available disk space. A configuration or permission failure is not repaired with innodb_force_recovery; correct the environmental problem and then make one normal start attempt.

Make a byte-for-byte copy before experimentation

If the log suggests corruption, missing files or I/O trouble and you do not already have a reliable snapshot, stop the instance and preserve the storage first. Create a byte-for-byte copy or a storage-level snapshot using a method appropriate for your platform. Keep the original read-only when possible, and perform salvage attempts against the copy.

Record the MySQL version, configuration, exact file names and timestamps. Include the InnoDB system tablespace, individual *.ibd tablespaces, redo logs and binary logs in the preserved set. The exact files and locations vary by version and configuration, so use the configured paths rather than assuming a default directory.

This copy is not a substitute for a backup: it preserves the state you have now, including any corruption. Its purpose is to let you test a recovery strategy without destroying the only evidence of what happened.

Preferred recovery: restore a clean backup and apply binary logs

When corruption or disk failure is indicated, a known-good physical or logical backup is safer and more predictable than trying to repair the damaged directory in place. Provision a clean MySQL instance that matches the backup’s documented requirements, restore the base backup, and then replay binary logs to the desired point in time.

Restore and point-in-time recovery sequence

  1. Prepare an isolated destination. Use a healthy volume and enough capacity for the restored data and its logs. Do not overwrite the only copy of the failed instance.
  2. Restore the base backup. Follow the backup tool’s documented restore procedure. For a physical backup, preserve the required file ownership and permissions; for a logical backup, initialize the clean server first and import the dump.
  3. Start the clean instance and validate the base. Check the error log, confirm that expected schemas and tables are present, and verify that the server accepts connections before applying additional changes.
  4. Identify the binary-log range. Select the first log position or timestamp after the backup and the recovery point you need. Keep the original binary-log files unchanged.
  5. Replay the logs. A typical pipeline uses mysqlbinlog to decode the selected files and sends the resulting statements to mysql, for example:
    mysqlbinlog binlog.000123 binlog.000124 | mysql -u root -p
Adapt file names, credentials, connection options and the stopping position to your backup and recovery plan.
  6. Validate before cutover. Check row counts or application-level invariants that matter to your system, inspect for missing transactions, and test representative reads and writes. Keep the failed server isolated until the restored copy is accepted.

Point-in-time recovery depends on both an uncorrupted base backup and uninterrupted binary-log retention for the interval you need. If either is missing, state the resulting recovery boundary explicitly rather than implying that every transaction can be recovered.

Use innodb_force_recovery only to salvage data

innodb_force_recovery is an emergency control for getting an instance up far enough to extract recoverable data when normal startup fails. It is not a general repair command and should not be the first response to a routine crash.

Safe escalation method

  1. Work on the preserved copy or a storage snapshot, not the sole original.
  2. Set the lowest recovery level that permits startup, then start MySQL and read the log again. Use the exact option syntax for your configuration, such as innodb_force_recovery=1, in the server’s option file or startup command.
  3. If that level does not start the server, stop it, raise the level one step, and try again. Increase it only as needed; higher levels disable more normal InnoDB processing and can expose incomplete or inconsistent data.
  4. Once the server starts, treat it as read-only for salvage. Dump the databases or tables that can be read with your logical backup tool. For example, an approved dump command may look like mysqldump --all-databases --routines --events > salvage.sql; adjust options for your server and omit objects that cannot be read.
  5. Check the dump for errors and expected objects. A command that exits is not proof that every table was extracted.
  6. Stop the forced-recovery instance, initialize or provision a clean instance, and import the dump. Remove the force-recovery setting from the clean server.

Data extracted under forced recovery may be incomplete, omit damaged tables or reflect transactions that could not be applied. Compare it with application records and other backups before declaring the restore complete. If no level permits startup, stop escalating and return to backup restoration or specialist forensic recovery; repeatedly changing settings cannot recreate missing pages.

Why deleting InnoDB files is dangerous

Do not delete ibdata1, individual *.ibd files or redo logs because a forum recipe says they are “stuck.” InnoDB discovers tablespaces at startup and applies redo information to bring pages to a consistent state. Removing one component can destroy recovery evidence, make the remaining metadata disagree with the files on disk, or permanently remove data that a backup could have recovered.

Deleting redo logs also discards information that may be required to roll committed changes forward after the crash. A missing tablespace error does not mean the named file is disposable; it means the server cannot find a dependency it expects. Preserve it, verify mounts and paths, and use a clean restore when the dependency is genuinely lost.

Choose the least risky option

Situation Recommended action What it protects Main limitation
Log shows normal InnoDB recovery Allow one normal restart to finish Normal transaction and redo semantics Rollback duration is unpredictable and may be long
Known-good base backup and binary logs exist Restore to a clean instance and replay logs Predictable rebuild and point-in-time selection Requires complete, usable backup and log coverage
Startup fails but files are readable enough for salvage Use the lowest innodb_force_recovery level that starts, then dump Opportunity to extract data without modifying the original copy Extracted data can be incomplete or inconsistent
No clean restore and severe corruption is present Preserve the copy and seek specialist recovery Remaining evidence No guaranteed outcome; do not improvise destructive repairs

A forced start can reduce time before you can read data, but it lowers confidence until the dump is validated. A backup restore generally takes longer to prepare but provides a cleaner basis for production service.

Troubleshooting branches for common symptoms

“Cannot open” or “no such file”

  • Confirm the configured data-directory and tablespace paths.
  • Check that the volume is mounted and the service account can traverse every parent directory.
  • Look for accidental renames, incomplete restores or a changed configuration file.
  • If the file is genuinely gone, do not manufacture a replacement; restore from a backup that contains it.

Redo-log or checkpoint mismatch

  • Preserve the current redo files and configuration.
  • Check whether a version change or manual file replacement occurred before the crash.
  • Do not remove redo logs to make startup proceed; use a clean restore or a controlled salvage copy.

Tablespace or page corruption

  • Stop repeated starts and capture a storage snapshot.
  • Check disk and filesystem health outside MySQL, because continuing I/O failures can corrupt the restored copy too.
  • Prefer backup restoration; use forced recovery only to extract readable objects.

Rollback appears frozen

  • Confirm from the log that rollback is still the active operation.
  • Check operating-system I/O and disk space rather than killing the process immediately.
  • If a new, specific error appears, follow that error’s path. An interrupted rollback can create another recovery cycle.

After service is restored

Restoring availability is not the end of the incident. Identify whether the trigger was power loss, an operating-system crash, failing storage, a full volume, an incorrect shutdown procedure or a configuration change. Repair or replace suspect hardware before trusting the restored instance.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Verify that scheduled backups completed and that the backup can actually be restored.
  • Confirm binary-log retention covers the recovery window your business requires.
  • Store at least one backup independently of the failed host or volume.
  • Document the data-directory path, service command, log location and restore sequence.
  • Rehearse a restore to an isolated server and validate application-level data, not just whether MySQL starts.
  • Remove any temporary force-recovery setting and restart normally before returning the server to production.

The durable fix is a tested recovery plan: normal restart for ordinary crashes, preservation and diagnosis for corruption, and a clean backup restore with binary-log replay when the existing files cannot be trusted.
