How to Fix MySQL Error 1064 (SQL Syntax Error)

A practical, version-aware guide to diagnosing and fixing MySQL Error 1064, including near-line clues, quoting rules, reserved words, SQL modes, and query reduction.

MySQL Error 1064 means the server’s SQL parser could not interpret your statement. Read the near '…' at line N part of the message, inspect the token immediately before it, then reduce the statement to the smallest failing example. Most fixes involve a misspelled keyword, a misplaced comma or parenthesis, a missing quote or operator, a reserved identifier, or SQL written for a different MySQL version or SQL mode.

What MySQL Error 1064 actually means

Error 1064 is a parser failure, not an indication that a table is missing or that a row violates a constraint. MySQL received the statement, tried to match it to the SQL grammar enabled for that server and session, and could not find a valid interpretation.

A typical message resembles:

ERROR 1064 (42000): You have an error in your SQL syntax;
check the manual that corresponds to your MySQL server version
for the right syntax to use near '...' at line 1

The near fragment is where parsing stopped. The actual mistake is often just before that fragment: a missing comma, an extra comma, an unmatched parenthesis, a misspelled keyword, or a value that was not quoted. Treat the reported line as a search area rather than assuming the first displayed token is wrong.

Use this fix sequence first

Follow these steps in order. They separate simple statement mistakes from version, identifier, and session-mode problems.

  1. Capture the complete evidence. Copy the entire SQL statement exactly as executed and the complete error text, including the near text and line number. If an application generated the query, log the final SQL after parameters have been expanded or bound; do not rely only on the source-code template.
  2. Inspect the reported area and the preceding token. Check spelling, commas, parentheses, operators, and quote pairs. Compare the number of opening and closing parentheses and look for a clause that ends abruptly.
  3. Reduce the statement. Keep only the smallest portion that still fails. For a SELECT, remove columns, joins, expressions, and clauses until the error disappears, then add them back one at a time. This identifies the first clause that changes a valid statement into an invalid one.
  4. Confirm the server version. Run SELECT VERSION(); and compare the statement with the MySQL Reference Manual for that release. Keywords, reserved-word status, and supported syntax can change between releases. SQL copied from another database engine may use a different grammar even when the intended operation is the same.
  5. Audit every identifier. Check table names, column names, aliases, database names, and roles for reserved words or special characters. Quote them with backticks or, preferably for a new schema, rename them to unambiguous names.
  6. Check quoting and SQL mode. Use single quotes for string literals and backticks for identifiers. Run SELECT @@sql_mode; when quote behavior is surprising. With ANSI_QUOTES enabled, double quotes delimit identifiers rather than strings.
  7. Remove invisible characters. Re-type suspicious spaces and punctuation. Non-breaking spaces, smart quotation marks, zero-width characters, and similar bytes can enter SQL copied from web pages, PDFs, chat, or generated text and can make otherwise correct-looking syntax fail.

How to read “near … at line …”

Start immediately before the displayed fragment

Parsers frequently discover a problem only when a later token becomes impossible. For example, if a comma is missing between two selected columns, the error may be reported near the second column. If a closing parenthesis is missing, the message may point at the next clause. Read backward from the near text until you find the last place where the grammar could have gone in more than one direction.

Use the line number as a locator, not a diagnosis

In a multi-line statement, line N identifies the input line where parsing stopped. A quote opened on an earlier line, an unmatched parenthesis, or a missing operator can make the reported line innocent. Format the query consistently and inspect the complete statement, including preceding lines.

Check the generated statement, not only application code

ORMs, query builders, migration tools, and string concatenation can add or remove spaces, commas, aliases, or values. Save the exact SQL sent to MySQL and reproduce it in a client. If the standalone statement works but the application fails, compare parameter expansion, character encoding, and session settings.

Correct the syntax mistakes that trigger 1064 most often

Misspelled or misplaced keywords

SQL keywords must match the grammar for the installed server. A misspelling, a clause in the wrong order, or a keyword borrowed from another database engine can stop parsing. Compare the statement with the syntax diagram in the manual for your version rather than changing words by trial and error.

Missing, extra, or misplaced commas

Column lists, value lists, and assignments require separators in specific positions. An extra comma before a closing parenthesis is invalid in many statement forms; a missing comma can cause the next column or expression to be reported as the error location. Inspect both sides of every comma near the reported line.

Unmatched parentheses

Count opening and closing parentheses in function calls, expressions, subqueries, and INSERT or CREATE TABLE lists. Add indentation so each opening parenthesis has a visible matching close. A missing close often produces an error at a later keyword such as FROM, WHERE, or );.

Missing operators or malformed expressions

Expressions need an operator between values, columns, and functions. Check comparisons, arithmetic, concatenation, and boolean conditions around the failure point. A condition that contains two adjacent expressions without an operator is not valid SQL.

Unquoted string values

Text literals use single quotation marks:

SELECT * FROM users WHERE name = 'Ada';

Leaving a name or other text value unquoted makes MySQL interpret it as an identifier or keyword. Also check that every opening single quote has a matching closing quote and that an apostrophe inside the value is escaped or passed as a bound parameter by the client library.

Smart quotes and copied punctuation

Curly quotes such as “Ada” are not interchangeable with the ASCII single quote used for a MySQL string. Replace them by retyping the statement in a plain-text editor. The same caution applies to non-breaking spaces, zero-width characters, and punctuation transformed by rich-text software.

Reserved words and identifier quoting

MySQL reserves certain words for its grammar. The MySQL 8.4 Reference Manual states that reserved words are permitted as identifiers when quoted according to the schema-object naming rules. It also documents that an identifier containing special characters or a reserved word must be quoted whenever it is referenced.

Quote a reserved column or table

Backticks delimit MySQL identifiers. For example, a column named order can be referenced as:

SELECT `order` FROM orders;

A table whose name is the reserved word select can similarly be addressed as:

  • [Dont Hesite to Order] 24 hours customer services and professional technology team are standing by
SELECT * FROM `select`;

Backticks tell MySQL that the text is an object name, not a keyword. They do not quote a string value; use single quotes for that.

Renaming is usually cleaner for new schemas

Quoting can repair an existing schema, but every query, migration, report, and tool must continue to quote the name correctly. If you control a new schema, choose descriptive names that are not reserved words and contain no unnecessary punctuation. Renaming an existing object requires a coordinated migration and updates to dependent code, so assess that cost before changing production identifiers.

Function names and IGNORE_SPACE

The historical MySQL manual documents the IGNORE_SPACE SQL mode. When enabled, built-in function names are treated as reserved words in additional contexts. A table named count, for example, can produce Error 1064 unless it is quoted. If a name collides with a function, backtick it or rename it, and record the mode in which the statement must run.

Use the right quote for the right job

Purpose Correct delimiter Example Important qualification
String or date value Single quote WHERE name = 'Ada' Ensure the closing quote is present; escape embedded quote characters or bind the value.
Table, column, alias, or database identifier Backtick SELECT `order` FROM orders Needed for reserved words and names containing special characters.
Double quote Depends on sql_mode SELECT "name" FROM users With ANSI_QUOTES, double quotes identify objects, so use single quotes for strings.

Do not “fix” a string by surrounding it with backticks, or an identifier by surrounding it with single quotes. Those delimiters have different grammatical meanings.

Version and SQL-mode differences

Verify the server you are actually connected to

Run:

SELECT VERSION();
SELECT @@sql_mode;

A development server, a test container, and production may run different releases or modes. The error text’s instruction to “check the manual that corresponds to your MySQL server version” is a direction to use the documentation matching that server, not a second error code or a repair command.

Check syntax copied from another database engine

SQL dialects overlap but are not identical. A statement copied from another engine may use different quoting, pagination, upsert, date, or identifier rules. Translate it to MySQL syntax and verify each clause against the MySQL manual for the installed release instead of assuming a keyword is portable.

Prefer a local statement fix over a global mode change

Changing a server-wide or session-wide sql_mode can make one query work while changing parsing or validation for other applications. First correct the statement, quote the identifier, or migrate the schema. If a mode change is genuinely required, document whether it is session-only or persistent, test all affected workloads, and keep development and production settings consistent.

Minimize a failing query systematically

Reduction is especially useful for long reports, generated joins, and migrations.

  1. Copy the failing statement into a scratch file and preserve the original.
  2. For a SELECT, replace a long select list with one known column, then remove joins, subqueries, grouping, ordering, and filters until the statement parses.
  3. For an INSERT, test one column and one value, then add pairs in the same order. Confirm that the column count matches the value count.
  4. For UPDATE or DELETE, keep a single assignment or predicate while checking the statement shape. Do not execute a destructive test without a safe transaction or a restricted WHERE clause.
  5. Add removed clauses back one at a time. The first addition that restores Error 1064 identifies the section to inspect.

This method distinguishes a parser problem from a later execution problem. Once the statement parses, errors about unknown columns, permissions, constraints, or data types are separate issues with different remedies.

Examples of typical repairs

Reserved column name

-- Problematic when order is reserved in the active version
SELECT order FROM orders;

-- Quote the existing identifier
SELECT `order` FROM orders;

For a new design, renaming the column to a nonreserved name avoids requiring backticks in every query.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

String value treated as an identifier

-- Incorrect
SELECT * FROM users WHERE name = Ada;

-- Correct
SELECT * FROM users WHERE name = 'Ada';

Check the active mode before changing quote style

SELECT @@sql_mode;

If ANSI_QUOTES appears in the result, double quotes are identifier delimiters. Rewrite text values with single quotes rather than disabling the mode merely to accommodate one statement.

Invisible character in a copied query

If a statement looks correct but fails at a space, quote, or operator copied from a web page or PDF, delete and retype that character in a plain-text editor. Comparing the bytes or using an editor that reveals Unicode whitespace can expose a non-breaking space or zero-width character.

Choosing between common fixes

Fix MySQL-version correctness Portability Maintenance When to choose it
Correct the statement’s grammar High when checked against the installed version Usually best when written in the target dialect Improves readability First choice for typos, commas, operators, quotes, and clause order.
Backtick an existing reserved identifier Correct when the object name is valid and consistently quoted Less portable because delimiter rules differ Every reference must preserve the quoting Useful when renaming a live schema is impractical.
Rename the identifier Correct after dependent code is migrated Generally better across engines Lower long-term ambiguity, higher migration effort Preferred for new schemas or coordinated schema changes.
Change sql_mode May alter parsing and validation beyond this query Can reduce consistency between environments Creates configuration dependency Only when the application has a documented, tested requirement.

When the apparent fix does not work

The error moves after you add a clause

That usually means the removed portion was valid and the newly added portion contains the next syntax problem. Keep the last known-good statement, add one change, and inspect the exact token that causes the error to return.

Quoting the name still fails

Confirm that you used a backtick, not an apostrophe or a smart quote, and that the object exists with exactly that name. Then check for an unmatched quote or parenthesis elsewhere in the statement and verify the active server version and sql_mode.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The query works in a client but fails in the application

Compare the final SQL text, connection character set, session sql_mode, and parameter handling. The client may be connected to a different MySQL release or may set session options that the application does not. Reproduce the application’s connection settings before changing the query.

Fixing 1064 reveals a different error

Once parsing succeeds, MySQL can proceed to name resolution, authorization, type checking, constraint checks, and execution. An unknown-column or permission error at that point is progress: address it as a separate problem rather than reintroducing syntax changes.

A compact checklist

  • Copy the complete statement and complete 1064 message.
  • Read the near fragment and inspect the token immediately before it.
  • Check keyword spelling, clause order, commas, operators, parentheses, and quote pairs.
  • Use single quotes for values and backticks for identifiers.
  • Look for reserved words, function-name collisions, and special characters in object names.
  • Run SELECT VERSION(); and SELECT @@sql_mode;.
  • Compare the syntax with the Reference Manual for that exact MySQL release.
  • Strip the query to the smallest failing statement, then add parts back individually.
  • Remove smart quotes, non-breaking spaces, zero-width characters, and other copied formatting artifacts.
  • Prefer a statement correction or a planned rename to a broad SQL-mode change.

What to remember

Error 1064 says that MySQL could not parse the statement under the grammar and configuration it was using. The displayed location is a clue, often one token after the real mistake. A disciplined reduction of the query, verification of the server version and SQL mode, correct separation of string and identifier quoting, and careful handling of reserved names resolves the error without masking it through a risky global configuration change.
