Then check the player’s permission, refresh the app, and confirm the track isn’t managed by the app that downloaded it.
1. Find out whether the problem is the file or the player
Try opening the file in a second audio player already installed on your phone. This simple comparison helps narrow down the cause; it is a practical troubleshooting suggestion also made in a Google Files Help Community response, not a guarantee that either player supports every format.

- It plays in the second player: The file is probably readable by Android, so focus on the original player. Update or restart it, then check its permission and cache.
- It fails in both players: Check that the download or copy is complete. A damaged or truncated file is one possibility. Then check its audio encoding and container.
If the track plays but you hear no sound, try another known-good track and check the player and device volume, as well as whether audio is being sent to a connected Bluetooth device. These are general diagnostic checks, not causes established by the cited Android support pages. If the file is silent in more than one player, inspect or replace the source copy before changing system settings.

2. Check the format—and what Android’s compatibility list means
Audio files have both an encoding (codec) and a container. Android’s Android 12 Compatibility Definition Document specifies audio decoding requirements for implementations that declare audio output support: AAC profiles, FLAC, MP3, MIDI, Vorbis, PCM/WAVE and Opus. It also describes container requirements for some codecs. Read the Android 12 compatibility document.

That is a platform baseline for Android 12, not a promise that every player app, older phone or unusual codec-and-container combination can open every file. A file may also be incomplete or damaged. A Google Files Help Community product-expert reply from June 2023 lists MP3, AAC, WAV, FLAC, PCM and Opus as supported formats, but community guidance is not a current normative guarantee for all devices.
If one player accepts the file and another does not, use the player that works or check the failing app’s supported formats. If the file uses an uncommon format, you can try a player that supports it or convert a copy to a more widely supported format. Keep the original until you have confirmed the converted copy plays.

3. Allow the player to access music and audio
Check whether Android has granted the player access to local audio:

- Open Settings → Apps.
- Select the music player.
- Tap Permissions, then check Music and audio.
- If access is denied, allow it and try the file again.
Google describes the “Music and audio” permission as access to music and other audio files on the device. Menu names and locations can vary by Android version and phone maker. Google’s permission guide explains app permissions.

4. Refresh the player without deleting its data
- Install any available update for the player from its app store.
- Close and reopen the app. If that doesn’t help, restart the phone.
- Clear the player’s cache, then test the file again. The Settings path is commonly Settings → Apps → [player] → Storage & cache → Clear cache, though labels vary.
Google’s Android guidance says, “Clear cache: Deletes temporary data.” It distinguishes this from storage clearing: “Clear storage: Permanently deletes all app data.” See Google’s steps for freeing up space.
Use Clear storage or Clear data only as a last resort. It may reset settings or remove app-specific state. Before doing it, check the player’s own guidance, especially if it stores downloads or playlists. Do not confuse clearing the player’s data with deleting an individual music file.

5. Look for app-managed downloads in the app that saved them
For a track copied to the phone or downloaded as an ordinary file, look in Files or your phone maker’s file browser. The Files app and its steps may differ by device.

A track downloaded for offline listening inside a streaming or media app may not appear as a normal file in the file browser. Check that app’s library or downloads area. Google advises: “To delete content from other sources, delete from the app that you used to download it.” Google’s storage guidance covers content from other sources. A Google Files Help Community answer also notes that some app downloads are not exposed in Files; treat that as community guidance, not a universal rule.

6. Choose the fix that matches what you found
