A login or read timeout calls for timeout settings and server-performance checks; a DecoderException or “payload too large” error calls for packet-size settings; and a startup crash with Connectivity installed points to a mixin conflict. First record the disconnect screen and the relevant part of latest.log, then make only the change that matches the symptom.

Identify the failure before changing RandomPatches
Do not begin by raising every timeout or replacing the entire modpack. RandomPatches affects several independent parts of the connection process, so the error text determines which setting is relevant.

Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Login timeout
A login timeout occurs while the client is joining and before normal gameplay begins. It can happen when a heavily modded server takes longer to build player data, synchronize registries, or finish other login work. The relevant control is the server-side login timeout, not the packet-size limit.
Read or KeepAlive timeout
A read timeout means an established connection stopped producing data within the allowed period. A KeepAlive timeout is the related liveness check used after connection. Slow startup, a busy server, a weak route, a VPN, antivirus filtering, or an intermittent network can all produce this symptom. The log may mention ServerPlayNetHandlerKeepAlive or a keep-alive failure.

Oversized-packet disconnect
Messages such as DecoderException, “payload too large,” compressed-packet size errors, NBT compound limits, or custom-payload failures are not ordinary timeout problems. Increasing a timeout will not make an oversized packet acceptable. Inspect the packet-size settings instead.
Startup crash
If the game crashes while loading the modpack rather than disconnecting during join, suspect a mod conflict, version mismatch, or overlapping mixin. When Connectivity is installed, its project documentation specifically identifies an overlap with RandomPatches that can cause a crash because Connectivity applies first.

Capture evidence
- Save the complete disconnect text or crash report.
- Open the instance’s
latest.logand copy the lines around the first error, not only the final “connection lost” line. - Record the Minecraft version, loader (Forge or Fabric), RandomPatches version, server address, and other networking-related mods.
- Note whether the failure affects only one server, every server, or only one computer.
Verify Minecraft, loader, and RandomPatches compatibility
Use the RandomPatches file built for the pack’s exact Minecraft version and loader. A jar that happens to have a similar filename can still target a different game line.
Supported 1.16 Forge files
The Forge project page lists support across Minecraft 1.16.1 through 1.16.5. Its latest listed 1.16.5 Forge release is RandomPatches 2.4.4-forge, dated February 21, 2021. That date identifies the published release; it is not a promise that the jar works in a newer Minecraft version.

Do not put a 1.16.5 jar into a 1.16.1, 1.15, or later-version pack unless the project explicitly provides compatibility. Likewise, do not substitute a Fabric build for a Forge instance or a Forge build for Fabric.
Check the loader and dependency set
- Confirm the launcher profile’s Minecraft version.
- Confirm whether the instance starts with Forge or Fabric.
- Remove duplicate RandomPatches jars so only the intended file is loaded.
- Check that the rest of the pack uses the same loader family and compatible dependency versions.
RandomPatches is documented as standalone and has no required dependencies. That does not make the rest of the modpack independent: unrelated mods, libraries, and loader components still need their normal version alignment.
Understand what must match between client and server
RandomPatches itself is unusual in that it can run client-only or server-only. The official documentation also says a client can connect when the other side has a different RandomPatches version. This exception applies to RandomPatches’ own patches; it does not override requirements imposed by other mods.
| Component | What the documentation establishes | Practical implication |
|---|---|---|
| RandomPatches | Can be client-only or server-only; the two sides may use different RandomPatches versions. | You do not need to force identical RandomPatches jars solely to make this mod connect. |
| Loader | The instance must use the appropriate Forge or Fabric build. | A Forge/Fabric mismatch remains a failure even when RandomPatches is present on only one side. |
| Other mods and libraries | Normal modpack compatibility rules still apply. | Match required versions and dependencies for every unrelated mod. |
If removing RandomPatches makes the pack start but also removes a needed patch, restore the compatible file rather than copying the server’s entire mod folder over the client. First establish that the game version and loader are correct, then inspect the specific conflicting mod.

Find and safely edit randompatches.toml
RandomPatches stores its settings in config/randompatches.toml inside the relevant Minecraft instance or server directory. Stop the game or server before editing, make a backup copy, and read the comments beside each option. TOML syntax is strict: preserve section names, quotation marks, brackets, and commas.
When a reload is available
On the documented branch, use /rpconfigreload after saving the file. The command reloads supported values without a full restart. If the command is unavailable or a particular option is not hot-reloaded, restart the relevant client or server instead. A server-side setting must be changed on the server; editing only your local copy cannot alter the server’s login or keep-alive behavior.
Change one related value at a time
- Back up
randompatches.toml. - Identify whether the log reports login, read, KeepAlive, packet-size, or mixin trouble.
- Change the smallest relevant setting and leave unrelated values at their documented defaults.
- Reload with
/rpconfigreloadwhere supported, otherwise restart. - Retry the same join attempt and compare the new log with the original.
Fix login, read, and KeepAlive timeouts
The 1.16 Fabric README explains that vanilla connection timeouts are hardcoded and can be too short for slower computers or heavier modded instances. It documents the following defaults:
| Setting | RandomPatches documented default | Vanilla baseline | Side | Use it for |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Connection read timeout | 120 seconds | 30 seconds | Client and server | An established connection that stops receiving data. |
| Login timeout | 2,400 ticks (120 seconds) | 600 ticks (30 seconds) | Server | A join that takes too long before gameplay starts. |
| KeepAlive timeout | 120 seconds | 30 seconds | Documented as a timeout setting; apply it on the side specified by the file comments | A keep-alive response that does not arrive in time. |
| KeepAlive interval | Configurable; the README recommends the vanilla 15-second interval | 15 seconds | Follow the file comments | How frequently liveness packets are sent. |
The Forge documentation says login timeout generally has more impact than read timeout. If the disconnect happens during the joining screen, inspect the server’s login-timeout value first. If the player was already connected and then becomes unresponsive, inspect read or KeepAlive behavior instead.

Do not increase the KeepAlive interval casually
RandomPatches’ README recommends leaving the KeepAlive interval at 15 seconds. Increasing the interval delays liveness checks and can make a dead connection appear usable for longer; it does not repair packet loss, a blocked route, or an overloaded server. Change it only when you have a specific reason and understand which side owns the option.
Timeouts are not a cure for server overload
A longer allowance can help a slow computer or a large modded instance finish legitimate work, but it cannot make a server complete that work faster. If many players time out while the server is overloaded, inspect server logs, tick performance, memory pressure, and startup tasks separately. RandomPatches only changes how long the connection waits.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFix oversized packets and payload errors
Use packet-size settings when the log identifies a compressed packet, NBT compound tag, client custom payload, or another size limit. RandomPatches documents higher limits for compressed packets, NBT compound tags, and client custom payloads; some of these options are marked as applying on both client and server.
Match the setting to the error
- Compressed packet size: use this when the decoder rejects the compressed packet before it can be processed.
- NBT compound size: use this when a serialized item, entity, block entity, or player data compound exceeds the documented limit.
- Client custom payload: use this when a mod channel sends a payload that the client rejects as too large.
Change the smallest relevant value, retain the backup TOML, and apply the change on every side named in the setting’s comments. Raising a client limit alone will not help if the server rejects the packet first, and raising a server limit alone will not help if the client decoder still enforces its own limit.
Best Value
When a larger limit exposes the real problem
An oversized packet can indicate malformed or runaway mod data rather than a harmless limit. If the same mod repeatedly creates an enormous NBT compound or payload, identify that mod from the log and test a compatible version or configuration. Do not treat an unlimited or extreme value as a general fix; it can increase memory and processing pressure during decoding.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Resolve the Connectivity mixin conflict
When Connectivity and RandomPatches are both installed, Connectivity’s documentation warns that the mods overlap and that Connectivity can make RandomPatches crash because Connectivity applies first. This is a startup compatibility issue, not a reason to keep increasing network timeouts.
Add the documented blacklist entry
- Stop the client or server.
- Open
config/randompatches.toml. - Set the blacklist exactly as follows:
mixin_blacklist = ["ServerPlayNetHandlerKeepAlive"]
- Save the file and restart, or use
/rpconfigreloadif the running branch supports reloading that option. - Retry startup and inspect
latest.logfor the original mixin error.
Connectivity is not required on both sides of a connection, according to its project documentation. The blacklist line is the key compatibility action when both mods are present; do not remove unrelated mixins or add arbitrary class names based only on a generic crash message.
Separate a local computer problem from a network problem
Once versions and RandomPatches settings are correct, test whether the failure follows the computer or the network. This prevents spending time editing TOML when a VPN, antivirus filter, DNS resolver, router, content filter, or ISP path is dropping the connection.
Use an isolation sequence
- Repair the modpack. Use the launcher’s repair option if available, or reinstall the affected instance after backing up worlds, saves, and configuration files.
- Temporarily close VPN and antivirus network features. Disable only long enough to test, then restore protection. If the problem disappears, add a narrowly scoped exception or consult that product’s documentation rather than leaving protection disabled.
- Test another network. A phone hotspot or another trusted connection can show whether the normal router, content filter, or ISP path is involved.
- Try the server’s direct IP and port. This bypasses DNS resolution problems. Use the address and port supplied by the server administrator; do not guess a port.
- Check proxy, DNS, and IPv6 behavior. A local proxy, a failing resolver, or an IPv6 route can affect one computer even when the server is healthy. Compare results with the launcher and operating-system network settings on another machine.
- Reset a damaged hosts file when appropriate. CurseForge support includes hosts-file repair among its network troubleshooting steps. Do not delete legitimate entries blindly; restore the operating system’s standard hosts configuration or follow the platform’s documented repair procedure.
Interpret the result
| Test result | Most useful next focus |
|---|---|
| The same instance works on another network. | Investigate the original router, content filter, ISP path, VPN, DNS, or IPv6 route. |
| The failure follows the computer across networks. | Inspect the local installation, proxy, antivirus, DNS, IPv6, and other software; repair or reinstall the pack. |
| Only one server fails while other servers work. | Compare the failing server’s version, loader, mod list, address, port, and server-side performance. |
| Every player fails at the same login stage. | Ask the server administrator to inspect server logs, login work, packet limits, and server-side configuration. |
Common mistakes that prolong the problem
- Putting a newer jar in an older pack: use the exact Minecraft and loader line instead of the newest filename.
- Matching RandomPatches at all costs: its documentation permits client-only, server-only, and different versions; focus matching effort on the loader and mods that actually require it.
- Raising every timeout: this hides the distinction between login, read, and KeepAlive failures and can make diagnosis harder.
- Changing a client file for a server-side symptom: login timeout is documented as server-sided, so edit the server configuration.
- Using timeout changes for packet errors: “payload too large” and decoder failures require the relevant packet-size option.
- Deleting Connectivity without checking the documented workaround: when the conflict is confirmed, add the exact
mixin_blacklistentry first and preserve the rest of the pack. - Editing TOML while the game is running: the game may overwrite the file or keep old values in memory; stop, back up, edit, then reload or restart.
- Testing only one route: direct-IP testing and another network provide evidence that a launcher reinstall alone cannot.
Prepare a useful escalation report
If the documented settings and isolation tests do not resolve the issue, report it through the RandomPatches GitHub tracker. The maintainer asks users to test the latest version available for their Minecraft version and to include enough information to reproduce the failure.
- Minecraft version and loader.
- RandomPatches version and whether it is the Forge or Fabric build.
- Complete error text, disconnect screen, or crash report.
- The relevant
latest.logsection, including the first exception and its surrounding stack trace. - Relevant values from
config/randompatches.toml, including any packet-size changes and the mixin blacklist. - The installed networking or packet-related mods, especially Connectivity.
- Whether the failure occurs on another computer, another network, or when using the server’s direct IP and port.
Redact account tokens, session data, private IP addresses, and other credentials before posting logs. Keep the original files privately so you can provide additional context if the maintainer requests it.
Quick Recap
A symptom-first decision checklist
- Crash during startup? Verify the loader and versions, then check for the Connectivity overlap and add
mixin_blacklist = ["ServerPlayNetHandlerKeepAlive"]if that conflict is present. - Disconnect while joining? Inspect the server-side login timeout and confirm that the server is not taking longer than the allowed period to complete modded login work.
- Disconnect after connection? Inspect read and KeepAlive behavior, leave the KeepAlive interval at the recommended 15 seconds unless there is a specific reason to change it, and test VPN, antivirus, and network paths.
- Decoder, NBT, or payload-size error? Adjust only the matching compressed-packet, NBT, or client custom-payload limit on the sides named by the configuration comments.
- Still failing? Repair or reinstall the pack, test another network and the direct IP, then report the complete evidence with the exact versions and configuration.
