The control may be switched off or hidden, may not exist on your release, or may still be rolling out. Microsoft’s general customization guide and newer release notes describe different options for different Windows versions, so one absent control alone does not prove Windows is broken.
Start by identifying what is missing
Taskbar problems fall into a few different categories, and the right fix depends on which one you have:

- An icon or button is absent: it may be turned off in Settings or hidden in the system tray overflow.
- A behavior seems wrong: auto-hide, alignment, badges, or display settings may be responsible.
- A setting such as moving the taskbar is unavailable: it may depend on your Windows version or feature rollout.
- The taskbar stopped responding after an update: check whether Microsoft has documented an issue for your exact build before trying a workaround.
To check your Windows version and build, open Settings > System > About and look under Windows specifications. Keep that information handy when comparing your device with Microsoft’s update notes.

- Open Settings > Personalization > Taskbar.
- Expand Taskbar items and turn on the relevant item, such as Search, Task View, or Widgets.
- Expand System tray icons or Other system tray icons to check whether a tray icon is disabled.
- If an app icon is in the system tray overflow, drag it to the visible system tray if you want it there. You can also drag icons back into the overflow area.

Check taskbar behavior and display options
In Settings > Personalization > Taskbar, expand Taskbar behaviors. Review the options available on your installed build, including alignment, auto-hide, badges, flashing, and settings for multiple displays.
- If the taskbar seems to have disappeared: auto-hide may be enabled. Move the pointer to, or touch, the bottom edge of the screen to reveal it.
- If icons or controls appear on the wrong display: review the taskbar options for multiple displays.
- If icons or notifications behave differently than expected: check the relevant behavior and tray controls instead of changing unrelated settings.
Microsoft’s Customize the Taskbar in Windows guide covers the longstanding controls for visibility, pinning, the system tray, alignment, auto-hide, and displays. To pin an app, use the supported taskbar or Start-menu options; pinned app icons can also be reordered by dragging.

Why taskbar position or size controls may be missing
Do not assume every Windows 11 device has the same position and size controls. Microsoft’s general customization guide describes alignment as center or left and the taskbar at the bottom. Newer update notes describe additional options for particular releases, with staged availability.

If the taskbar stopped responding after an update
First match the symptom to the installed Windows release and the relevant update notes. Microsoft’s documented workaround below is limited to the desktop-session issue described in its September 22, 2026 26H1 preview note. It is a temporary mitigation, not a general repair for missing icons, unavailable settings, or every unresponsive taskbar.
- Press Ctrl+Shift+Esc to open Task Manager.
- Select Run new task.
- Type
explorer.exe, then select OK.
Microsoft’s note also describes a Known Issue Rollback path for the documented issue. If your device is managed by an organization, an administrator may control update policies and rollback mitigations; contact them rather than changing managed update settings yourself.

When a setting is still unavailable
- Confirm the Windows version and build in Settings > System > About.
- Identify whether the missing control affects visibility, behavior, position or size, or app pinning.
- Check the applicable Microsoft update notes for your release and whether availability is gradual.
- If the symptom began after an update, compare it with documented issues for that build before trying a workaround.
A feature announcement for one release does not establish that the same control is present on an older release, or already available to every device on the newer one. Check the matching release notes before using registry edits or third-party customization software.
