First determine whether the problem is a wallet display issue, a withdrawal the exchange has not processed, an incomplete history export, or a transfer that is already confirmed on the blockchain. Find the transaction ID, check it on an explorer for the exact network used, then reconcile the result against records from every relevant exchange and wallet. Correcting a record can restore an accurate history; it cannot reverse an irreversible transfer.
Start with the transaction ID and its source
Before editing an import or retrying a transfer, locate the original record. Check the sending exchange’s withdrawal details, order and activity history, wallet activity, email confirmations, account statements, and any CSV or tax export you already have. Record the transaction ID (also called a transaction hash), asset, amount, date and time, destination address, network, and fee when available.

For Coinbase Exchange, its documentation identifies order, deposit, withdrawal, balance, and wallet-statement routes for retrieving account activity: Coinbase Exchange financial statements. Coinbase Taxes also offers downloadable reports, but Coinbase says its Coinbase.com activity scope excludes Coinbase Wallet and Coinbase Pro activity. A report from one service therefore may not represent your complete crypto history: Coinbase Taxes reports.

Check whether the transaction exists on the correct blockchain
Search the transaction ID on a blockchain explorer that supports the network actually used. A token with the same name or ticker may exist on more than one network; searching on the wrong chain can make a valid transaction appear missing. Compare the explorer result with the sending record, checking the network, asset or token contract where relevant, amount, timestamp, destination address, and confirmation status.

- Explorer shows a confirmed transaction to the expected address: the chain has a record. The problem may be a wallet display, token visibility, or receiving-service issue.
- Explorer shows pending or unconfirmed: use the explorer’s status and the sending service’s status to understand whether the transaction is still processing. Do not assume a second send will fix it.
- Explorer cannot find the transaction ID: confirm the ID and network from the source record. If it was an exchange withdrawal, the exchange may not have processed it yet; check the withdrawal status and contact the exchange.
- Explorer shows a different destination or asset than expected: preserve the record and establish exactly what was sent before taking further action.
Exodus likewise advises checking the correct network, looking up the transaction on an explorer, and verifying the destination address. Its troubleshooting guidance distinguishes an unprocessed custodial withdrawal from a transaction that has already appeared on-chain: Exodus: My crypto is missing.
If the chain record is correct but your wallet does not show it
A wallet interface is not the blockchain itself. If the explorer confirms the transaction to your address, first check that the wallet is displaying the same network and that the relevant asset is enabled or visible. Refresh or sync the wallet’s network data using its built-in controls; the precise label and path vary by wallet and version. Exodus notes that an asset may be on another supported network and recommends refreshing wallet network data.

Rebuild a complete history from original records
Gather exports separately from every exchange, wallet, and account you used. Then reconcile them against one another and, where applicable, the public-chain entries. Do not treat a single tax report or exchange export as a complete history: Coinbase expressly excludes Coinbase Wallet and Coinbase Pro activity from Coinbase Taxes’ Coinbase.com scope, and automated import coverage depends on which services and blockchains an integration exposes.

- Export each source: download the available transaction, order, deposit, withdrawal, and statement records from each exchange; export or record wallet activity for self-custody accounts.
- Match transfers across both sides: compare the sending withdrawal with the receiving deposit using transaction ID, asset, network, amount, date, destination, and fees. A transfer between your own accounts may appear as separate outgoing and incoming entries.
- Check coverage and dates: confirm the export’s date range and whether it includes the activity types you need. Compare available records with explorer entries for relevant on-chain transactions.
- Identify the actual discrepancy: classify it as missing, duplicated, wrong account, wrong timestamp or time zone, or incorrectly categorized before changing anything.
Blockpit describes missing-history cases and notes that import coverage varies with the exchange or blockchain integration. Its guidance says a transaction present in source history can be added manually or submitted to support with a marked example and supporting documentation: Blockpit Help Center: Missing Transactions.
Correct imported records without losing the audit trail
Keep the original files unchanged and save the transaction IDs and evidence used to support any correction. If you add a missing entry or amend a classification, make the reason traceable to a source record. Avoid creating a manual transaction merely to make balances look right: an unsupported adjustment can conceal the underlying problem or duplicate activity when a later import runs.

- For a missing entry, confirm it appears in an exchange statement, wallet record, or on-chain history before adding it.
- For a duplicate, identify which source or import created each copy and retain enough information to explain the removal or exclusion.
- For a timestamp discrepancy, compare the source’s time zone and the import’s displayed time before changing the date.
- For a wrong classification, use the original activity and transfer context to support the correction rather than guessing from the amount alone.
If an integration does not expose an activity type or the source records conflict, ask the provider or exchange how to obtain the underlying history. A manual correction should not replace source evidence.
Preserve records and apply the rules for your jurisdiction
Recordkeeping requirements differ by country, and these examples are not universal tax advice. UK HMRC says individuals are responsible for keeping their own records for each cryptoasset transaction. Its guidance identifies cryptoasset type, transaction date, whether it was a buy or sell, units, sterling value at the transaction date, cumulative units held, bank statements, and wallet addresses as relevant records: HMRC Cryptoassets Manual, CRYPTO10400.

That retention period is specific to New Zealand guidance, not a general rule for every reader: New Zealand Inland Revenue: Cryptoasset records.

Know when a record fix cannot recover the funds
A missing wallet display or incomplete report is a records problem. A confirmed transfer to the wrong address is a funds-recovery problem. Ethereum.org states that an Ethereum transaction is irreversible; there is no central authority that can undo it. If the address belongs to a known recipient or custodial service, contact that recipient or service, but recovery is not guaranteed: Ethereum.org: How to revoke access.

Ethereum.org says funds cannot be recovered without them. Never share a seed phrase or private key with a purported recovery helper; legitimate services do not ask for it.
