The most reliable route is Satisfactory Mod Manager (SMM), configured for the correct local or remote server installation. Confirm that every required mod supports dedicated servers, match the same profile and versions, and clean the game’s Mods folder if an update or failed uninstall leaves stale files.

What “missing mods” means
A mod warning is a compatibility check, not merely a download prompt. Satisfactory compares the mod requirements declared by the server with the files loaded by your client. The connection can fail when a required file is absent, when the installed version is different, when a dependency is missing, or when the mod was installed in a different game installation than the one you are launching.

- The dedicated server: its game directory contains the server’s mod loader and server-compatible mods.
- Each player’s client: the PC installation used to launch Satisfactory contains the client portion of every mod that requires one.
A single-player mod working on your computer does not prove that it can run on a dedicated server. Dedicated-server support must be stated on the mod’s compatibility information.
Check the prerequisites before changing files
Use a supported platform
Modded dedicated servers require a desktop server installation on Windows or Linux and a PC client. Console clients and console servers are not supported for this mod workflow. If a player is joining from a console, installing additional files on the server will not make that client compatible.

Confirm the game branch and version
The server and clients must be running the same Satisfactory game branch and a compatible game version. A game update can invalidate a previously working mod set even when no one intentionally changed the profile. Record the branch selected by the server host and select that same branch or version in SMM when managing the installation.
Obtain filesystem access
For a local server, you need access to its actual directory. For a remote server, the administrator must have filesystem or SFTP access. Remote management cannot work through an in-game password alone; SMM or a command-line tool must be able to read and write the server’s files.
Install and manage the server with Satisfactory Mod Manager
SMM is the supported low-friction option because it downloads Satisfactory Mod Loader (SML), mod files, and declared dependencies together. It can manage a local dedicated-server installation or a remote installation when the required file access is available.
- Install or update SMM on the administrator’s PC. Close Satisfactory and stop the dedicated server before changing its mod files.
- Open the server manager: in SMM, choose Other → Manage Servers.
- Add the target server. For a remote installation, enter the connection details and the filesystem or SFTP information supplied by the host. For a server on the same computer, select its local installation.
- Select the exact installation. Use the game-version/install dropdown to choose the server branch and directory you actually run. Do not select a client installation merely because it appears first in the list.
- Install the intended profile. Add the required mods, allowing SMM to install SML and dependencies. If another administrator supplied a profile export or copied-mods list, import or reproduce that list instead of choosing replacements by name.
- Apply the changes and restart. Start the dedicated server only after SMM reports that the files were written successfully. Then launch the matching client profile on each player’s PC.
If SMM reports that it cannot write to the server, treat that as an access or path problem rather than repeatedly reinstalling mods. Verify the directory and credentials first.
Make sure SMM is writing to the real server directory
It is common to have several Satisfactory folders: a game client directory, a test branch, a backup, and the dedicated-server directory. A successful SMM download is irrelevant if it lands in one of the other locations.

Local installation checks
- Open the server’s startup configuration or service definition and identify the directory from which the server executable is launched.
- In SMM’s server entry, select that same directory and game version.
- After applying a mod, inspect the directory’s modification time or contents while the server is stopped. This confirms that SMM changed the installation you actually start.
Remote installation checks
- Ask the administrator or host for the absolute server path and the supported transfer method.
- Confirm that the account can list, upload, replace, and delete files in that path. Read-only access is not enough to install or remove mods.
- After SMM completes, reconnect to the server storage and verify that the mod loader and mod files are present in the selected installation.
Examples of possible server directories include D:SatisfactoryDS on Windows and /opt/SatisfactoryDedicatedServer on Linux. These are examples of path formats, not universal defaults; use the path configured for your own service.

ficsit-cli is the command-line alternative for administrators who prefer to work directly on the server. The Satisfactory Modding Documentation states that SMM (version 3.0.0 and newer) and ficsit-cli can manage a remote server installation when network filesystem or SFTP access is available.

When configuring ficsit-cli, choose Installations → New Installation and enter the real server directory, such as D:SatisfactoryDS or /opt/SatisfactoryDedicatedServer. The tool cannot repair a missing-mod error if its installation entry points at the wrong folder.
Verify that every mod supports dedicated servers
Open each mod’s page on ficsit.app and inspect its Latest Version information. If the page shows a compatibility table with a Server column, a checkmark for your server type indicates dedicated-server compatibility. If there is no checkmark, do not install that mod on the dedicated server simply because it works in single-player.
Check all of the following for every item in the profile:

- The mod supports the server’s operating environment or server type.
- The latest listed version supports the game branch you are running.
- Dependencies are installed in the versions required by that mod.
- The mod has not been marked obsolete, incompatible, or client-only.
A mod can be useful on a client while still being unsuitable for a dedicated server. Remove or replace unsupported entries rather than trying to force them into the server’s Mods directory.
Put each mod on the correct side of multiplayer
The Satisfactory Modding FAQ advises assuming that a mod is both-sided unless its mod page or the dedicated-server compatibility grid explicitly says otherwise. Both-sided means the required files must be installed on the server and on every client that joins.

Use the mod page or compatibility grid as the authority when the classification is not obvious. Never infer placement from a mod’s name or from how it behaves in a solo save.
Synchronize profiles, versions, and dependencies
Build one authoritative mod list
Choose one administrator-maintained profile as the source of truth. In SMM, export the profile or use its copy-mods-list feature, then give that list to every player. Each player should install the listed items rather than adding similarly named alternatives from memory.
Update after a game update
When Satisfactory or the server branch changes, update the mods before attempting other fixes. Official Satisfactory support recommends updating or disabling mods first whenever mods are installed and an issue appears. Restart the server after the update and have clients refresh their profiles before reconnecting.

Remove obsolete versions before reinstalling
Do not leave old copies beside newly downloaded files and assume the loader will choose correctly. Disable or remove the outdated entry in SMM, apply the change, and then install the current compatible version. Repeat this on the server and on every affected client.

You can join a vanilla server but not this modded server
- Confirm that you are launching the PC client profile managed by SMM, not an unmodded shortcut or a second game installation.
- Compare the server’s authoritative profile with your client’s installed list.
- Install every both-sided mod and dependency at the same compatible version.
- Check the ficsit.app server column for any item that may not support dedicated servers; remove unsupported entries from the server profile.
- Restart the client after applying changes, then reconnect to the restarted server.
The server starts, but reports a missing mod for everyone
- Stop the server and verify that SMM or ficsit-cli targeted the directory used by the startup service.
- Check that SML and the required dependencies exist in that installation.
- Review the server’s selected game branch and compare it with the profile’s target version.
- If the host uses a file manager or SFTP, confirm that uploads completed and were not placed in a home directory, temporary folder, or backup path.
Only one player is rejected
The server profile is probably present, so compare that player’s client installation with the working players. Look for a missing both-sided mod, an old version, a disabled profile, or a different game installation. Re-export the known-good profile and apply it to the affected client instead of changing the server for everyone.

The problem began immediately after a game or mod update
Update all compatible mods, then restart both the server and clients. If a mod has not yet published support for the new game version, disable it on the server and on clients rather than mixing old and new files. Re-enable it only when its compatibility information confirms support.
SMM will not disable or remove the mods
- Stop Satisfactory and the dedicated server.
- In SMM, turn off all mods and apply the change.
- If files remain or the disable operation fails, manually delete the game installation’s
Modsfolder. - Reinstall or reconnect SMM, select the correct installation, and enable the profile one mod at a time.
Uninstalling SMM by itself does not uninstall the mods already written into the game installation, which is why the manual folder cleanup may be necessary.
Account for hosting-provider restrictions
Third-party hosts can limit file transfer, directory visibility, restart controls, or the game branch that can be selected. Ask the host specifically for:
- SFTP or file-manager access to the dedicated-server directory.
- The absolute path used by the running server process.
- The supported Satisfactory branch and game version.
- A documented restart procedure after file changes.
- Backup and restore controls before changing the mod profile.
- Confirmation that its server build permits modded dedicated servers.
If the host cannot provide filesystem access, SMM cannot manage the remote installation directly. You will need the host’s own supported upload workflow or a plan that exposes the required access; repeatedly changing the client profile will not install files on a server you cannot reach.

A clean rebuild is appropriate after several failed updates, a migration between server directories, or an SMM uninstall that left old files behind. Preserve the save and configuration files separately, then stop the server and remove only the mod-related content from the selected game installation. Delete the Mods folder when SMM cannot disable the existing set, reconnect the correct installation in SMM, install SML and the current supported profile, and test with the smallest required set before adding optional mods.
Re-enable mods incrementally. Starting with the loader and essential dependencies makes it clear which addition introduces a new incompatibility. Keep a copy of the working profile so another player or a future update can reproduce it exactly.
Prevent the next missing-mod error
- Keep one exported SMM profile as the server’s canonical list.
- Record the Satisfactory branch and game version alongside that profile.
- Check the ficsit.app Latest Version and Server information before adding a mod.
- Assume both-sided placement unless the mod documentation explicitly says server-side or client-side.
- Update or disable mods first after every game update or unexplained connection failure.
- Back up the save, configuration, and known-good mod list before changing the server.
- Keep the actual server path and the host’s SFTP or file-manager details documented for anyone who administers the server.
The reliable fix in one pass
Stop the server, identify its real installation path and game branch, connect that installation in SMM through Other → Manage Servers, and install only mods whose ficsit.app compatibility information includes your dedicated-server type. Treat unclassified mods as both-sided, synchronize the exported profile to every PC client, and restart after applying the files. If the manager targeted the wrong folder or cannot cleanly disable the set, correct the path or delete the installation’s Mods folder and rebuild the profile. Those checks address the missing files, wrong versions, unsupported mods, and access restrictions that account for the usual dedicated-server failures.
