A full-page capture can include content beyond the viewport without actually scrolling the page, so lazy-loading code may never run. A navigation event or network-idle state alone does not prove that below-the-fold images are ready.
Why a full-page screenshot can miss lazy-loaded images
Full-page capture and scrolling the live viewport are different operations. Playwright describes fullPage: true as capturing the full scrollable page, but its discussion of scroll-triggered content explains that rendering off-screen content need not move the visual viewport. A page that loads images in response to scrolling or IntersectionObserver callbacks may therefore leave images below the fold unloaded during a direct full-page capture. See Playwright’s screenshot documentation and the Playwright issue discussing lazy and scroll-triggered content. The issue is a feature discussion, not a guarantee about every browser or hosted screenshot service, so verify your renderer’s behavior.

Fix the capture sequence
- Navigate and wait for an initial state. Choose a navigation state appropriate to the page, such as DOM content being available. This is a starting point, not proof that lazy images have loaded.
- Scroll in controlled steps. Move through the page so lazy-load callbacks and image requests can run. On long pages, use intermediate steps rather than jumping straight to the bottom; some pages only load content as each area approaches the viewport.
- Wait for the content you need. In a browser-automation workflow, check the relevant image or content readiness condition after scrolling. For images, that can mean checking that the required image elements have completed loading. A fixed pause may help, but elapsed time alone does not establish readiness.
- Capture the full page. Take the full-page screenshot only after the scroll pass and readiness check.
- Validate against representative pages. Test long pages, pages with dynamically inserted content, and the kinds of image-loading behavior your target sites use.
There is no universally correct scroll increment or wait duration: page behavior, network conditions, and renderer implementation differ. Playwright’s Page API documentation describes navigation states including domcontentloaded, load, and networkidle; it discourages using networkidle as a general testing readiness signal and recommends assertions instead. Trigger lazy loading first, then verify the specific content the screenshot requires.
Using a hosted screenshot API
Check whether the provider actually scrolls through the page before its full-page capture, whether it exposes a per-scroll wait and a post-load delay, and whether you can request an explicit readiness condition. Also check full-page support and timeout limits, then test the behavior on your own pages. Settings are provider-specific; a parameter with a similar name elsewhere may not behave the same way.

ScreenshotAPI’s documented controls
ScreenshotAPI’s lazy-loading documentation describes lazy_load, which scrolls through the page before capture and defaults to false, as well as scroll_delay between scroll steps and a separate delay after page load. These are ScreenshotAPI-specific controls, not universal screenshot API parameters. Consult the provider’s current documentation for accepted values and timeout behavior.
Or skip the browser setup
ScreenshotNeo is a website screenshot API and MCP server. Its full-page capture loads lazy images before taking the shot. For example, request a full-page WebP screenshot with one GET call:

ScreenshotNeo accepts cookie and consent banners like a visitor and removes more than 60 known consent platforms, newsletter popups, and chat widgets before capture; each of those steps can be turned off. Bot checks, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads, and cache hits cost nothing, and responses identify the page verdict and billing status in headers. Its MCP server provides take_screenshot, get_page_info, and capture_pdf for Claude, Cursor, and other MCP clients. The free plan includes 1,000 screenshots per month with no card; paid plans start at $5 for 3,000 shots. Sign up for ScreenshotNeo’s free plan.
Troubleshooting missing images
- Images are still missing after capture. Confirm that the workflow scrolls the live page, not just that it requests a full-page screenshot. Check the target images’ loading state after the scroll pass.
- Only images near the top load. Use intermediate scroll steps and allow the page to react at each step. A single jump to the bottom may skip intersections that trigger loading.
- The capture starts before images appear. Replace reliance on navigation completion or a generic network-idle wait with a check for the images or content needed in the final shot.
- A hosted API behaves differently than expected. Verify that its lazy-load option is enabled, and check its documented scroll delay, post-load delay, full-page behavior, and timeout. Do not assume another provider uses the same option names or defaults.
- Results vary on dynamic pages. Repeat tests on pages that add content while scrolling and adjust the sequence to the page’s behavior. Recheck the actual readiness condition rather than extending a delay blindly.
Reliability and cost considerations
Scrolling, waiting, and capturing add time to a browser workflow, especially on long or dynamically populated pages. A longer fixed delay can increase runtime without guaranteeing that the right content loaded; readiness checks are more targeted when available. For hosted APIs, compare the documented scroll behavior, wait controls, timeout, and full-page support against the pages you need to capture. The cited documentation does not establish a neutral price or service-quality comparison among providers.
