If a website screenshot taken through MCP is missing images, first check whether the capture included the part of the page where they appear. Then scroll the target images into view, wait for evidence that they loaded, and inspect network and console output before capturing again. A full-page screenshot covers the page’s scrollable area, but does not by itself guarantee that every site-specific lazy loader has run.
Why lazy-loaded images are missing
Lazy loading defers fetching off-screen images until they are near the viewport or until a site-specific trigger runs. That means page navigation finishing is not the same as every image being ready: the browser’s load event can fire while lazy-loaded images and other media remain unloaded. A short fixed pause after navigation cannot prove that a particular image has loaded. MDN’s lazy-loading guide explains the distinction.

The exact MCP server, browser, and site behavior matter. The examples below use Playwright MCP; adapt tool names and options to another MCP server’s documentation.

Work through the capture in order
- Check the capture scope. Playwright MCP can capture the viewport, a target element, or the full scrollable page. A viewport capture omits below-the-fold content by design. Use
fullPage: truefor the full scrollable page; it cannot be combined withtarget. See Playwright MCP screenshot options. - Locate the missing image. Use the accessibility snapshot to understand page structure and identify relevant content, then inspect a screenshot to verify the visual result. A snapshot helps with structure; it does not establish that an image has rendered.
- Trigger lazy loading. Scroll the region containing the missing image into or near the viewport. Native lazy loading commonly responds to proximity to the viewport, while JavaScript-based loaders may use their own scroll or intersection logic.
- Wait for a meaningful signal. If the page exposes text or another condition that appears when the content is ready, use the MCP’s wait-for-text capability. Playwright MCP also supports a bounded time wait of up to 30 seconds per call. Treat a delay as a retry interval, not proof of readiness. Its default 500 ms post-action settle delay is not a guarantee that all lazy images have finished loading. Details are in the Playwright MCP server documentation and configuration options.
- Inspect browser evidence. Review network requests since page load for image-related URLs and check console messages for JavaScript errors. Look for no request after scrolling, a failed or blocked request, or a URL/response issue before simply increasing the timeout.
- Verify the target image when possible. If code-level inspection is available, check the specific image’s Boolean
completeproperty. Also confirm it is visibly rendered; completion alone does not guarantee the expected appearance. - Capture again, then check MCP transport. Take the screenshot after triggering and verifying the image. Separately check Playwright MCP’s
--image-responsessetting:allowis the default, omitexcludes image responses from the tool response, andonlylimits responses to images. Missing image bytes in the MCP response do not by themselves show that the page omitted the image.
Diagnose what kind of failure you have
| Evidence | What it suggests | Next check |
|---|---|---|
| No image request appears after scrolling | The page may not have triggered its lazy loader. | Scroll the region nearer the viewport and check whether the site relies on JavaScript or an intersection trigger. |
| An image request appears but fails or is blocked | The browser attempted to fetch the image, but the request did not succeed. | Inspect the request result and console messages for the failure or blocking cause. |
| The image request succeeds, but the image is not visible | The issue may be rendering, layout, or visibility rather than fetching. | Inspect the specific element and whether it is hidden, covered, or laid out outside the expected region. |
| The page shows the image, but the MCP result lacks image data | The MCP response’s image handling may differ from the page rendering. | Check --image-responses and distinguish the returned tool data from the browser screenshot. |
These are diagnostic possibilities, not conclusions about an uninspected page. Narrowing a particular case further requires its URL, MCP server and version, browser, and relevant request or console evidence.

If you need a screenshot without configuring a browser workflow, ScreenshotNeo offers a one-request website screenshot API. Its cookie/consent-banner handling and removal of supported newsletter popups and chat widgets happen before the shot; each step can be turned off. Only clean shots are billed: bot checks or CAPTCHAs, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads, and cache hits cost nothing, with response headers indicating the page verdict and billing status. Its MCP server provides take_screenshot, get_page_info, and capture_pdf tools for AI agents. The free plan includes 1,000 screenshots a month with no card; paid plans start at $5 for 3,000.
Example cURL request:
curl -G "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot" -d access_key=YOUR_API_KEY --data-urlencode url=https://stripe.com -o shot.webp
See the ScreenshotNeo documentation for request options and setup. For this lazy-loading issue, an API call is an alternative capture path, not a guarantee that a particular site’s JavaScript loader will run; verify the result when the target page requires interaction.

FAQ
Does a full-page screenshot force every lazy image to load?
No. Full-page mode captures the page’s scrollable area; it is not documented as a guarantee that every site-specific loader has been triggered or every image request succeeded.
Does the page load event mean all images are ready?
No. Lazy-loaded media may still be unloaded when the page’s load event fires.
