First identify whether you are seeing a moving halo or a fixed mark. A glow that follows a bright object on a dark scene is usually blooming from zone-based local dimming. A bright or dark mark that stays in one screen position across several inputs and programs needs a separate panel check. Uneven brightness that appears mainly on a blank screen or in a very dark room can be a viewing-condition effect on some LCD models.
Use the same scene on more than one app or input, change one supported picture setting at a time, and judge the television under normal viewing conditions. If a location-specific spot remains, document it and contact the manufacturer with the exact model and software information.

What the symptom tells you
Mini LED televisions use many small LEDs behind an LCD panel. The backlight is grouped into independently controlled zones rather than being illuminated as one uniform sheet. When a bright object sits inside a dark scene, the zone covering that object may light an area larger than the object itself. The extra light is seen as a halo, or blooming.

That mechanism is different from a mark that stays in one place. Before changing settings, classify the symptom by its behavior.

Blooming or a halo that follows an object
Look for a soft glow around subtitles, stars, a streetlight, a white logo or another bright object against black. Move to a different scene: the glow should move with the bright object rather than remaining attached to one panel location. Blooming is most noticeable with local dimming and HDR. Acer Community explains that its full-array local-dimming halo “cannot be completely eliminated while HDR is enabled.” The exact visibility depends on the television’s zone layout and video processing; the statement is not a guarantee that every Mini LED model behaves identically. A fixed bright or dark spot
A spot that remains at the same coordinates when the picture changes is not behaving like an ordinary halo. Check it with live television, a built-in app, an external HDMI device and several types of content. TCL notes that a dot can be limited to one app or input, while a mark that persists may be panel-related. Its troubleshooting article is at TCL Support.
Clouding, flashlighting or broad unevenness
Broad pale areas, corner glow or vertical bands can be easier to see on a completely black screen than during a film. Sony says some uneven brightness can be visible on covered LCD televisions in a dark room or with no input and describes that limited condition as normal for those models. That guidance is not a universal acceptance rule for every Mini LED TV, every severity level or every warranty claim. Read Sony’s support article, modified July 7, 2026, for the models it covers.

Record what you observe before making adjustments. Include the scene, picture mode, HDR or SDR status, input, viewing distance and room lighting. This makes later comparisons meaningful and gives support a reproducible description.
Step-by-step troubleshooting
1. Test normal content on several sources
- Choose a familiar dark scene containing a bright object, then a normally lit scene with skin tones or text.
- Watch the same material in at least two apps or inputs. If possible, compare an internal app with an HDMI device.
- Move to a different scene and note whether the glow follows the object or the mark stays fixed.
- Check whether the symptom is present in menus or only in one program. TCL specifically advises checking whether a dot appears across content or only in a particular app or input.
Do not press, rub or tap the panel while testing. Physical pressure can create temporary patches and does not diagnose a backlight zone.
2. Repeat the observation under ordinary room lighting
View the television from your normal seat with the room lit as it usually is. Then, if necessary, repeat briefly in a darker room. A blank black screen viewed in a dark room is a special stress case: Sony’s explanation of normal unevenness applies to that situation and to the LCD products named in its article, not automatically to every Mini LED set. Give more weight to a mark that distracts you during ordinary programs than to a faint patch visible only on a no-input screen.

Write down the original value, change one item, and replay the same scene. The labels and menu paths differ by manufacturer, operating system and software version, so use your television’s manual or on-screen search rather than assuming a universal route.

- Backlight: Reduce it in small steps and compare the same dark scene. This changes the backlight output and may reduce the visibility of broad unevenness or halos; it does not repair a damaged panel.
- Light sensor: If the set offers an ambient-light sensor, enable it and observe the result over several scenes. The sensor can adapt brightness to the room.
- Power Saving: Test the available power-saving setting. Sony lists power-saving adjustment as one way to reduce the appearance of uneven bright areas on supported models.
- Picture mode: Try Standard if your model provides it. Keep a record of the previous mode so you can return to your preferred calibrated setting.
These controls are visibility adjustments, not promises of a cure. Stop if a change makes motion, shadow detail or overall brightness unacceptable.
4. Compare HDR and SDR deliberately
Use the same type of content when comparing settings. HDR normally drives higher highlight brightness, which can make a zone’s spill more obvious around a small bright object. Acer’s guidance specifically says its full-array local-dimming halo cannot be completely removed while HDR is enabled. A faint halo in HDR therefore does not by itself prove that an LED has failed. Compare an SDR version of a similar scene before deciding that the television has developed a new hardware fault.
5. Control the viewing environment, not the panel
A dark room and a black screen maximize the contrast between a dimmed zone and any residual light. Moderate room illumination can make a halo less noticeable, and Acer recommends display-brightness and room-light adjustments as ways to reduce noticeability. This does not make the backlight more uniform; it changes how strongly your eyes perceive the difference. Do not shine a lamp directly at the screen or use reflections as a substitute for a proper test.

Confirm that the television and external source are using their normal, current software for your model, then retest. A mark limited to one application or HDMI input points first toward that source path, while a mark visible in menus and every input is more consistent with the display itself. Keep the television’s model number, software version and input details available when contacting support. Menu names and available controls can change after an update, so quote the labels you actually see.

7. Document a persistent location-specific mark
If the same bright or dark spot survives different content, apps and inputs, photograph it during normal viewing. Include a wider shot showing the whole screen and a closer shot showing the position, but avoid editing, filters or excessive exposure that could exaggerate the defect. Note the date, room lighting, picture mode, HDR or SDR status and whether the mark appears in the television’s own menus. TCL’s guidance treats a persistent bright or dark spot as potentially panel-related; only the manufacturer can apply its model-specific pixel and warranty criteria.
8. Contact the manufacturer with a reproducible description
Use the support channel for the television’s exact model. Provide the serial number if requested, purchase region, software version, inputs tested, the scenes that reveal the symptom and the settings you changed. Ask which test pattern or service procedure the manufacturer wants you to use. Follow that procedure rather than relying on a generic internet pixel test, because acceptable uniformity and pixel policies vary by model and region.

A small moving halo
When the glow moves with bright objects, appears mainly in high-contrast HDR scenes and becomes less noticeable after a modest backlight or room-light change, it is consistent with the limits of zone-based local dimming. Mini LED improves control by using smaller, more numerous LEDs than older full-array systems, but zones still illuminate areas rather than individual pixels. There is no setting that can guarantee perfect confinement of every highlight.
A faint patch visible only on a blank screen
Some LCD televisions show clouding or uneven brightness on a no-input black screen, particularly in a dark room. Sony calls that condition normal for the covered products and suggests backlight, light-sensor, power-saving and Standard-mode adjustments. Treat the statement as model-specific guidance, not a blanket declaration that every visible patch is acceptable. If the area is obvious during ordinary viewing, continues across inputs or grows, ask the manufacturer to assess it.
A bright or dark mark in the same position
A location that does not follow content deserves more attention than a moving halo. First exclude a source-specific overlay, stuck app element or cable/device issue by checking the television’s own menus and another input. If it remains, provide the documentation described above. A persistent mark may be panel-related, but a diagnosis cannot be made from one black test image alone.
What not to do
- Do not press, massage or twist the LCD panel to “spread” a bright spot. That can create permanent damage and will not restore backlight uniformity.
- Do not open the television or probe the LED driver. Internal circuits can retain hazardous voltages, and opening the set can affect warranty coverage.
- Do not treat a microfiber wipe as a repair. Cleaning can remove surface dust while blooming and internal nonuniformity remain unchanged.
- Do not declare a failed LED solely because a halo appears around a white subtitle in HDR. Zone spill is an expected limitation described in Acer’s support guidance.
- Do not rely on a single, overexposed camera photograph or a maximum-brightness test pattern to determine whether a panel meets its specification.
- Do not copy another model’s service-menu values. The same label can behave differently across hardware and software versions.

Model and warranty caveats
There is no universal “acceptable number” of bright spots, a standard halo radius or a Mini LED uniformity percentage established by the sources for this guide. Pixel policies, exchange thresholds and menu names differ by model, software version and sales region. A support representative may ask for a specific test image or video; use the requested method and keep the original files.
The manufacturer’s written policy for your model controls any warranty or return decision. If the television is within a retailer’s return period, record the symptom before that period ends, but do not ship or disassemble it until the seller or manufacturer gives instructions. For an out-of-warranty set, obtain a diagnosis and repair estimate before buying parts: a replacement panel is often a different decision from servicing a backlight driver, and the symptom alone does not identify which component is involved.

- Classify the symptom as moving halo, fixed spot or broad unevenness.
- Test at least two apps or inputs and include the television’s own menus.
- Use real SDR and HDR scenes instead of judging only a blank black screen.
- Repeat in normal room lighting and from your usual viewing position.
- Change Backlight, light sensor, Power Saving or Standard mode only when your model offers them; change one at a time.
- Record model, software version, input, scene, room conditions and original settings.
- Photograph a persistent mark without filters or exposure tricks.
- Escalate a same-location mark to the manufacturer rather than trying physical pressure or opening the set.
Blooming is a limitation of controlling a zone-sized backlight behind pixel-sized objects; a fixed mark is a different diagnostic category. Separating those behaviors, testing across content and inputs, and using only model-supported settings prevents unnecessary repairs while ensuring a persistent panel symptom receives the right support.
