How to Fix Minecraft LAN Not Working: 8 Proven Fixes

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Minecraft LAN should be simple: open a world to LAN, both players join on the same network, and you’re in. When it doesn’t work, it’s almost always a network discovery or firewall issue—not a Minecraft problem.

This guide covers the most common causes and gives you 8 proven fixes you can try in order. You’ll also get platform-specific checks (Windows, macOS, Linux, consoles), a quick troubleshooting flow, and answers to the FAQs people actually search.

What LAN Hosting in Minecraft Actually Uses (and Why It Fails)

When you “Open to LAN,” Minecraft advertises the server details so other clients can find it on the local network. Those announcements depend on your device being on the same LAN, with multicast/broadcast-style discovery working, and with ports allowed through your firewall.

Two common failure patterns show up repeatedly:

  • Discovery fails: the server is running on your machine, but others can’t see it in the LAN list.
  • Connection fails: the server appears, but join times out or disconnects.

In both cases, the fix is usually to confirm network details, allow Minecraft through security software, and ensure the devices are truly on the same subnet.

Prerequisites Before You Troubleshoot

  • Both devices must share the same LAN: same router, same Wi‑Fi network (or same Ethernet switch), same IP range.
  • No VPN / proxy on either device. Turn them off completely.
  • Both players use the same Minecraft edition (Java with Java, Bedrock with Bedrock). Java LAN and Bedrock LAN don’t mix.
  • Same major version usually matters. For Java, mismatched versions can still sometimes join, but it’s a frequent reason for failure.

If any of those prerequisites are off, the fixes below will be slower because you’re fighting the wrong layer.

8 Proven Fixes for Minecraft LAN Not Working

Start with the first fix and move down. Many “mystery LAN failures” resolve within minutes once the right firewall/network setting is corrected.

1) Confirm both players are on the exact same network and subnet

LAN only works when clients are on the same local network segment. If one device is on guest Wi‑Fi, a different router, or a different VLAN, Minecraft discovery won’t work.

Check: the first three (sometimes four) numbers of the IP address (IPv4). They should match, like 192.168.1.x on both devices.

2) Disable VPNs and “network apps” that interfere with discovery

VPN clients, “privacy” tools, and some network filtering apps can block multicast discovery and change routing. Temporarily turn them off on every device involved.

Also disable any “Wi‑Fi security,” “ad blocker,” or “parental control” network layers if your router/app offers them—then test LAN again.

  • The unique flat cable shape allows for a cleaner and safer installation. You can easily and seamlessly make the cable run along walls, follow edges & corners or even make it completely invisible by sliding it under a carpet.

3) Ensure the host is actually using Open to LAN (and the right settings)

On the host, go to the world menu and choose Open to LAN. Choose a game mode and confirm cheats/server rules if shown.

Then, on the client, refresh the server list (or use the direct connect address if available). If you only paused the world or closed it, the LAN list won’t update.

4) Allow Minecraft through Windows Firewall (and verify it for both private and public)

On Windows, a firewall rule that only covers Private networks is a classic LAN blocker—especially when the network is set to Public.

Open Windows Security > Firewall & network protection > click your active network (often “Private” or “Public”), then confirm your current profile allows LAN traffic. After that, add/enable rules for Minecraft and Java.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Do this:

  • Open Windows Security > Firewall & network protection > Allow an app through firewall.
  • Check Minecraft and Java entries for both Private and Public (or switch your network to Private and only keep Private enabled).
  • If entries are missing, click Change settings > Allow another app and add the correct executable.

Test again immediately after saving changes.

5) Allow Minecraft through your router or security software (not just the PC)

Some routers block client-to-client traffic on guest networks or require “AP isolation” to be off. If you can join other devices but not LAN games, check router settings.

What to look for: “Guest Wi‑Fi” mode, “AP isolation,” “Client isolation,” or “Block LAN-to-WAN.” Disable those features for the test network, then try LAN again.

6) Switch from Wi‑Fi to Ethernet (or test a different Wi‑Fi band)

Wi‑Fi power-saving modes, band steering, and wireless isolation rules can disrupt discovery packets. Ethernet is the quickest way to remove wireless variables.

If Ethernet isn’t possible, test both 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz. Then restart both devices (host and client) after connecting to the new band.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

7) Try changing the LAN port by restarting the server (and ensure you’re not using a conflicting app)

When the host starts LAN, Minecraft picks a LAN server port. If another service is using the same port (rare but real), joins can fail.

Do this: stop the LAN world, fully close the game on the host, restart it, reopen Open to LAN, and try joining again. If your game shows a port number, note it and confirm no other app is bound to it.

8) Use direct connect or manual IP instead of relying on LAN discovery

If the LAN list doesn’t show the world (discovery issue), you can often connect directly by using the host’s IP and the LAN port Minecraft reports.

On the client, choose Direct Connect (or “Add Server” equivalent) and enter the host IP. If you see a displayed port like 12345, use the format HOST_IP:PORT. This bypasses discovery and tests whether the network path itself works.

Platform-Specific Checks

Even “LAN works” fixes can fail due to OS-specific firewall defaults or network settings. Use the relevant checklist below to get to a confirmed cause.

Windows 10/11

Windows is the most common environment to fix because firewall profile and allowed-app rules vary by network type.

  1. On both devices, open Settings > Network & Internet > Wi‑Fi (or Ethernet) > confirm the network is set to Private.
  2. Open Windows Security > Firewall & network protection > Allow an app through firewall.
  3. Enable Private and (for testing) Public for Minecraft and Java.
  4. Restart Minecraft on the host and test again.

macOS

macOS firewall can quietly block inbound traffic even when the UI seems permissive. Also, ensure discovery isn’t being blocked by filtering software.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Go to System Settings > Network and confirm both devices are on the same Wi‑Fi/LAN.
  2. Open System Settings > Privacy & Security > Firewall.
  3. If firewall is on, click Firewall Options and allow Minecraft (and Java) for inbound connections.
  4. Restart the host world using Open to LAN and retest from the client.

Linux

Linux users often hit UFW/iptables rules that block inbound TCP/UDP traffic required for LAN hosting and joining.

  1. Check whether UFW is active: run sudo ufw status.
  2. If active, temporarily test by allowing inbound Minecraft/Java or (for a controlled test) allow the Minecraft LAN server port you see in-game.
  3. Confirm both devices are on the same subnet and no VPN is active.
  4. Restart Minecraft and re-open LAN.

Consoles (Xbox / PlayStation)

Consoles can join LAN worlds when the network is correct, but NAT type and router settings matter more than on PCs.

  1. Verify the console and the host device are on the same router (no guest Wi‑Fi, no mesh “isolation” modes).
  2. Check NAT type (console network settings). If NAT is strict, test with a less restrictive NAT.
  3. Disable VPN (if any) and avoid switching networks mid-session.
  4. Use direct connect/manual server entry if the console edition supports it.

Common Mistakes That Waste Hours

  • Different versions or editions: Java can’t LAN host into Bedrock clients, and mismatched Java versions can fail.
  • Guest Wi‑Fi / client isolation: devices can reach the internet but not each other.
  • One device on Ethernet and the other on Wi‑Fi with a different network segment: looks connected, but isn’t the same LAN.
  • Firewall changed but Minecraft wasn’t restarted: firewall prompts/rules may not apply until the app relaunches.
  • Using a work/school laptop network: some networks block peer-to-peer traffic by policy.

Troubleshooting Flow: What to Try When Nothing Works

  1. Test with direct connect first: if direct connect works, your network path is fine and only discovery is broken.
  2. Restart in the right order: host launches LAN first, client loads world list second.
  3. Confirm IPs match: both devices should share the same 192.168.x.x (or similar) range.
  4. Temporarily disable firewall/security software for a single test on the host PC (only if you understand the risk). If LAN works, re-enable and instead add the specific allow rules.
  5. Change transport: move host to Ethernet, test again, then move client to Ethernet if possible.
  6. Eliminate third-party networking: turn off VPNs, ad-block DNS apps that inject routing, and any “tethering boosters.”

If you’re still stuck after these, your router may be the limiting factor (guest isolation, strict AP isolation, or blocked multicast). The fastest proof is testing with a different Wi‑Fi network or a different router.

FAQ

Why can’t my friends see my LAN world in the server list?

Most commonly it’s discovery blocked by guest Wi‑Fi/client isolation, a firewall rule, or devices being on different subnets/VLANs. Try direct connect using the host IP and LAN port.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Does Minecraft version matter for LAN?

It can. Java players usually have fewer issues when they match versions exactly. If you’re testing and LAN fails, have both players run the same Minecraft version and try again.

Can I use LAN over the internet with port forwarding?

Not true “LAN.” If you’re trying to connect from outside your home network, LAN discovery won’t work. You’ll need either a dedicated server, a tunneling method, or router port-forwarding plus appropriate security.

What ports are used for Minecraft LAN?

Minecraft uses a game server port for the LAN session. The exact port is shown by the host when the LAN server starts. Use that port for direct connect and for firewall allowances.

Why does LAN work for one friend but not another?

That’s usually an IP/subnet mismatch, a different network type (guest vs main), or firewall differences on the client device. Compare both clients’ IP ranges and ensure both are fully off VPN.

Bottom Line

When Minecraft LAN isn’t working, the fix is almost always about network reality: same LAN/subnet, discovery not blocked, and inbound connections allowed through firewall/security software.

Work through the 8 fixes in order—especially IP/subnet verification and firewall/router settings—and you’ll get to a confirmed cause quickly.
