Start with the exact alert and what you clicked: Word, a Microsoft Office installer file, or a document. Those are different problems, with different fixes. If Word opens but reports “Unknown Error 0x0” or “License Not Found,” use Microsoft’s Office update steps; if a downloaded installer is blocked, follow the installer-specific guidance below. A message about one .docx file is a document issue, not necessarily a Word launch failure.
First, identify what will not open
Write down the complete message and the item you clicked. If possible, take a screenshot. Use the matching path below rather than reinstalling Word as a first step.

- Word itself: The app fails to launch, or Word displays “Unknown Error 0x0” or “License Not Found.”
- The installer: A downloaded Microsoft Office
.pkgfile will not open, or macOS says it is from an unidentified developer. - One document: Word is already open, but a particular file will not open. See Microsoft’s Word for Mac issue guidance for document and feature problems.
- Editing or activation: Word launches, but asks for a license or will not let you edit or save. Check the update and license sections below.
If Word reports “Unknown Error 0x0” or “License Not Found”
Microsoft marked this launch issue resolved and, on July 15, 2026, directed affected users to update Office. The described update route requires macOS 12 or later. Use the update route that matches where you installed Office.

- Close all Office apps.
- In Finder, open Applications > Microsoft AutoUpdate.
- Install the available updates, then try Word again. If Microsoft AutoUpdate is not there, check
/Library/Application Support/Microsoft/MAU2.0/.
Office apps downloaded from the Mac App Store
- Close all Office apps.
- Open the App Store and choose Updates.
- Update the Office apps there, then test Word again.
For Microsoft 365 supplied by a workplace or school, check with your IT administrator: the Mac may be managed and updates may be deployed centrally.

If the Microsoft Office installer will not open
These steps apply to the downloaded Microsoft installer package, not to every macOS security warning or every app.
- Make sure the
.pkgdownload has finished. Microsoft notes that a completed download may take time to become available. - Move the installer from Downloads to the desktop and try opening it there.
- If it still will not open, delete the installer, empty Trash, then download it again from Microsoft using Safari.
If macOS says the Microsoft installer is from an unidentified developer
Microsoft’s specific instructions are to update macOS if needed, wait briefly after the download, move the installer to the desktop, then Control-click it and choose Open. This advice is for the Microsoft installer message; do not treat it as a general instruction to bypass warnings for unrelated software.

Apple explains that an app may not be registered with Apple by an identified developer, but other causes include missing privileges, damage, an incomplete or absent installation, and administrator restrictions. See Apple’s guidance for apps that will not open on Mac.

Apple lists several possible Mac-level causes: your account may lack the required privileges, the app may be damaged or not installed, or an administrator may prevent its use. Apple also notes that an app may need an update or reinstallation after a macOS upgrade.

- If this is a work- or school-managed MacBook, contact the administrator rather than trying to override organization restrictions.
- If the message says Word is damaged or missing, use Apple’s app guidance and Microsoft’s installation support to determine whether Word needs repair or a fresh installation.
- If the alert names a specific file rather than Word, troubleshoot that document rather than reinstalling the app.
If Office opens but cannot edit or save
This is different from Word failing to launch. Microsoft’s update guidance describes a separate reduced-functionality condition: starting July 13, 2026, some users may find Office apps can open and print files but cannot edit, save, or create new files. Microsoft ties the change for affected work or school users to a renewed certificate used to verify the license and keep apps updated, and says files are safe.
Microsoft’s stated update route is macOS 12 or later followed by updates to Microsoft 365 or Office apps. Check Microsoft’s current update instructions; if your organization manages Office, ask IT about deployment.

Check the app source and license if Word asks you to activate
Microsoft says Word, Excel, and PowerPoint downloaded from the Mac App Store require a Microsoft 365 subscription to create and edit documents. A one-time-purchase (perpetual) Office license does not work with the Mac App Store apps; Microsoft says those licenses work with Office apps downloaded directly from Microsoft. Check the app’s source and the license you own before considering a subscription. This distinction matters for activation or editing restrictions, not as a general fix for an app that will not launch.

If you have confirmed a license mismatch, Microsoft provides a license-file removal and reactivation procedure. Before removing license files, verify which account owns the license you intend to use. Microsoft’s process calls for signing in with that account and restarting after activation; some cases may require reinstalling Office before signing in.
