If Microsoft Teams won’t open on Windows, first check your internet connection, fully quit and relaunch Teams, then try Teams on the web. If the web app works but the desktop app does not, try Windows’ Repair option before Reset. Clear cache or reinstall only after those simpler checks; cache paths and installation steps can vary by Teams version and how your device is managed.
1. Check your connection and restart Teams completely
-
Open a website to confirm that your internet connection is working. Microsoft recommends checking connectivity and service incidents when Teams cannot reconnect: I can’t reconnect to Microsoft Teams.

If Teams is still running in the background, right-click its icon in the taskbar or system tray and choose Quit. Then open Teams again from Start. A window that has closed may not mean the app has fully stopped.

Open teams.microsoft.com and try signing in. If Teams on the web works but the desktop app does not, that points toward a desktop-app or local-data issue, but does not prove the cause. If neither version works, check your connection, account access, and Microsoft service status before repeatedly reinstalling the desktop app.

2. Use Windows Repair, then Reset if needed
Windows provides app recovery controls for some apps. Try Repair first because it is the less disruptive option; if Repair is missing or does not help, Microsoft says to select Reset. The controls may not be available for every app, and Windows does not guarantee that they will appear for every Teams installation. See Microsoft’s Repair apps and programs in Windows instructions.

Windows 10 support ended on October 14, 2025, according to Microsoft. That is relevant to the support status of the operating system, but by itself does not establish that upgrading will fix a particular Teams launch problem.
3. Clear Teams cache only if the documented path matches your version
Microsoft’s reconnect instructions describe clearing cache in a legacy Teams location. Deleting cache does not uninstall Teams, but Microsoft notes that it removes cached items including local message history and display images. Consider that consequence before deleting anything. The instructions are in Microsoft’s reconnect guidance.

This path is not established as universal for every current Teams build or installation type. If it does not match your installation, do not improvise another folder: follow current Teams-specific cache instructions for your version or skip this step.
4. Check for updates or reinstall Teams
If Teams still will not launch, check for updates and consider uninstalling and reinstalling the desktop app. Microsoft says desktop updates normally install automatically while Teams is idle or overnight. Its Teams app troubleshooting guidance also includes uninstalling and reinstalling as a troubleshooting step.
How you reinstall depends on how Teams was deployed. On a work- or school-managed computer, you may not have permission to remove or install apps yourself; contact your IT administrator rather than trying to bypass device controls.
5. Get help if the account or device is managed
Use Teams on the web as a temporary route if it works. If your organization manages your Teams settings or installation and the desktop app still fails, ask your IT administrator for help. Microsoft identifies the administrator as the first technical-support resource for organization-managed Teams settings: Troubleshoot in Microsoft Teams.
