Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Error 0xcaa80000 usually appears when the Microsoft Teams desktop app cannot complete sign-in. The safest sequence is to test Teams on the web, verify your connection and system clock, fully quit Teams, clear its local cache, then repair, reset, or reinstall the app. If web sign-in also fails—or several people are affected—the cause is more likely an account, Microsoft Entra ID, conditional-access, network, or service problem than a damaged installation.
What error 0xcaa80000 means
Microsoft does not currently publish one definitive explanation for this exact code in its public Teams status-code guidance. Its sign-in guidance says status codes help administrators diagnose authentication failures and that an unlisted or unresolved code may require administrator assistance.

In practice, 0xcaa80000 is associated with Teams authentication or connection to Microsoft identity services. Possible contributors include an expired sign-in session, stale local app data, an account-selection loop, VPN or proxy interference, incorrect system time, a failed MFA or SSO flow, conditional-access rules, or a Microsoft 365 service incident. The code alone does not prove that Teams is corrupted.

Use this distinction before changing anything:
| What you observe | Likely direction |
|---|---|
| Teams on the web works, but the desktop app fails | Local cache, stored session, app installation, or device-specific security issue |
| Teams on the web and desktop both fail | Account, password, MFA, tenant policy, network, identity provider, or service issue |
| Only one user is affected | User profile, account, credential, or device-specific problem |
| Many users fail at the same time | Service health, tenant configuration, identity provider, network, or policy change |
Try these quick checks first
- Verify general internet access. Open another website. If ordinary sites do not load, resolve the network problem before repairing Teams.
- Test Teams in a browser. Open https://teams.microsoft.com/ and sign in with the same work, school, or personal account. Complete MFA or other identity prompts.
- Try Microsoft 365 or Outlook. If the same account cannot sign in there, the problem is unlikely to be limited to the Teams desktop app.
- Check date, time, and time zone. Enable automatic time and synchronization. An incorrect clock can prevent secure connections and authorization.
- Test without a VPN, if your organization permits it. A VPN, proxy, DNS filter, firewall, or conditional-access rule can change how authentication traffic is handled. Do not permanently bypass company security controls; involve IT if the result changes.
- Quit and reopen Teams completely. Closing the window may leave the app running in the background.
Microsoft’s current reconnection guidance recommends checking connectivity, trying Teams for the web, testing VPN behavior, clearing the desktop cache, reinstalling Teams when necessary, and checking service-status information.

Quit Teams completely
Windows
- Right-click the Teams icon in the taskbar notification area.
- Select Quit.
- If Teams remains active, open Task Manager, select remaining Microsoft Teams processes, and choose End task.
- Reopen Teams and try signing in.
If the app will not close normally, an advanced Windows alternative is taskkill /F /IM Teams.exe. Use it only after saving work in other applications; it is an optional process-termination command, not a required Microsoft fix.
macOS
- Control-click or right-click the Teams icon in the Dock.
- Choose Quit.
- If necessary, open Force Quit and close Teams there.
- Start Teams again and authenticate.
Clear the Teams desktop cache
Cache cleanup is less disruptive than deleting broad Windows identity data. It does not uninstall Teams, but it removes locally cached web-client data such as icons, thumbnails, display images, local message history, and add-ons. Teams may ask you to sign in again and will rebuild cache files as you use the app.

Windows cache path
- Quit Teams completely.
- Open File Explorer.
- Enter
%appdata%MicrosoftTeamsin the address bar and press Enter. - Delete the contents of that Teams folder, not the entire Microsoft or Windows profile.
- Start Teams and sign in again.
macOS cache path
- Quit Teams completely.
- In Finder, choose Go > Go to Folder.
- Enter
~/Library/Application Support/Microsoft/Teams. - Delete the contents of that directory.
- Reopen Teams and authenticate.
These paths come from Microsoft’s documented reconnect procedure. Cache cleanup does not necessarily remove every Windows account-broker token, so it cannot resolve all authentication failures.

Repair or reset the Windows Teams app
On current Windows installations, the following option may be available, although labels vary by Windows version and Teams package:
Rank #3
- Digital Stereo Sound: Fine-tuned drivers provide enhanced digital audio for calls, meetings, music, and more
- Rotating Noise-Canceling Mic: Minimizes unwanted background noise for clear conversations; the rotating boom arm can be tucked out of the way when not in use
- Handy Inline Controls: Simple inline controls on the headset cable let you adjust the volume or mute calls without disruption
- USB-C Plug-and-Play: Simply plug the USB-C cable into your computer, including MacBook Neo laptops, and you're ready to talk or listen without installing software.
- Padded Comfort: Comfortable USB C headphones with adjustable headband feature swivel-mounted, leatherette ear cushions for hours of comfort
- Open Settings.
- Choose Apps > Installed apps.
- Find Microsoft Teams, open its menu, and select Advanced options.
- Choose Repair, if available, and test Teams.
- If Repair does not help, return to the same screen and choose Reset.
- Launch Teams and sign in.
Repair is the less destructive choice. Reset can remove app data and require another sign-in. If your installed build does not show these labels, use the cache procedure or Microsoft’s current app-management instructions for that build instead of deleting registry keys or identity folders.
Reinstall Teams only after local repairs
- Test Teams on the web and record whether browser sign-in succeeds.
- Quit Teams and clear its cache.
- Uninstall Microsoft Teams from Windows or macOS.
- Restart the computer.
- Download the current client from Microsoft’s official Teams site and install it.
- Sign in with the intended account.
Reinstallation can replace a damaged local app, but it cannot enable a disabled account, repair failed MFA, satisfy a device-compliance rule, restore a missing license, or fix a Microsoft 365 or identity-provider outage. Microsoft lists reinstalling as a supported reconnection measure in its official guidance.

When the account or organization is the real problem
Contact your Microsoft 365 or Entra administrator when any of these apply:
- Teams on the web also fails, especially with a different message, request ID, or correlation ID.
- Your password was recently changed, or MFA, passwordless sign-in, or SSO was modified.
- The account was moved between tenants, or you are choosing among personal, work, school, guest, or former-employer accounts.
- Conditional Access, device compliance, location restrictions, application restrictions, or a required managed device may be involved.
- The error follows you to another computer or network.
- Several colleagues began seeing the error together.
- Teams works on one network but not another, or only when the VPN is disconnected.
- The error returns immediately after cache cleanup and app reset.
Ask the administrator to check Microsoft 365 service health, Entra sign-in logs, Conditional Access results, licensing, and any identity-provider or SSO incident. Send the exact code 0xcaa80000, the full message, your account and tenant, the time of failure, whether browser sign-in works, whether VPN status changes the result, and any request or correlation ID. Microsoft’s Teams sign-in troubleshooting framework explains why many status-code cases require administrator investigation.

Use the symptom to choose the next action
| Observation | Recommended action |
|---|---|
| Web works; desktop fails | Quit Teams, clear the cache, then repair/reset and reinstall if necessary. |
| Web and desktop both fail | Test Microsoft 365 sign-in, capture diagnostic details, and contact IT. |
| Only one Windows profile fails | Repair or reset Teams and, if permitted, test another Windows profile. |
| All users fail | Check Microsoft 365 service health, tenant policy, identity provider, and network changes. |
| VPN-off testing fixes the issue | Have IT investigate VPN, proxy, DNS, firewall, and Conditional Access interaction. |
| The error follows the user across devices | Treat it as an account or tenant-side problem. |
| The error stays on one device | Investigate that device’s app, cache, security software, operating system, or profile. |
Fixes to avoid unless an administrator directs them
- Do not make registry edits casually. Old advice may target entries that affect more than Teams.
- Do not delete Microsoft.AAD.BrokerPlugin or other identity-provider folders as a routine step. Such data can affect Outlook, OneDrive, Office, and other Microsoft 365 applications.
- Do not permanently disable antivirus, firewalls, or enterprise security controls. If security software is suspected, use an IT-approved test and restore protection afterward.
- Do not repeatedly reinstall Teams. Reinstalling cannot fix server-side authentication, a blocked account, a failed MFA challenge, a missing entitlement, or an outage.
Teams Free uses a different support path
Teams personal or Free is not identical to Teams for work or school. Microsoft’s Teams Free recovery guidance tells users to select the sign-in banner, complete authentication, check system-tray notifications, and restart the app if the sign-in window does not appear. If you use a work or school account, your organization’s administrator—not consumer Teams support—usually controls password, MFA, licensing, and access policy.
What to expect after a successful fix
The first launch may take longer while Teams rebuilds local files. You may need to choose the correct account in the sign-in picker and complete MFA again. Cloud chats, teams, channels, meetings, and files remain associated with the account; clearing the desktop cache removes local cached copies, not the organization’s cloud content. If the same code returns after a clean reinstall while browser sign-in also fails, stop changing the local app and escalate with the diagnostic details above.
