Microsoft documents an HTTP 500 error when accepting a shared Outlook.com calendar, but similar wording can also appear when a Microsoft 365 app starts or when a desktop app sign-in fails with error [1001]. These are separate problems with different troubleshooting steps.
First identify where the error appears
Before trying a fix, note the product, the action that failed, and the complete error text or code. In particular, distinguish an HTTP 500 while accepting a shared calendar from a generic app-startup message and from desktop sign-in error [1001]. Microsoft’s instructions for one case should not be assumed to apply to the others.

- Accepting a shared Outlook.com calendar: look for HTTP 500 after selecting Accept.
- Starting a Microsoft 365 app: the app itself will not open and shows a general “Something went wrong” message.
- Signing in to a desktop app: check whether the message includes
[1001].
If HTTP 500 appears while accepting a shared calendar
Microsoft’s Outlook.com guidance says to select Accept again. If the error appears more than once, contact Microsoft Support. This advice is for the documented shared-calendar acceptance error; it is not a general fix for every Microsoft 365 HTTP 500.

Specific Outlook.com-to-business-calendar workaround
For a shared calendar sent from an Outlook.com account to a Microsoft 365 business account, Microsoft’s known-issues article says the recipient can accept the invitation in Outlook on the web, iOS, or Android. If the recipient already selected Accept in Outlook 2016, the sender should remove the calendar permissions and send a new invitation. Microsoft dates this workaround to May 2, 2017, so check the current article if the steps or interface no longer match.

If a Microsoft 365 app will not start
Use Microsoft’s app-startup guidance for a general error that appears when opening an app, rather than the shared-calendar steps.
- Wait a few minutes, restart the device, sign in again, and restart the app.
- If it still will not start, repair the Microsoft 365 or Office installation through Windows Settings or Control Panel.
- If repair does not resolve it, follow Microsoft’s uninstall and reinstall instructions. An Online Repair can repair the entire suite even if only one app is affected.

If desktop sign-in shows error [1001]
Error [1001] is a separate desktop-app sign-in issue, not the shared-calendar HTTP 500. Microsoft lists security software affecting Web Account Manager (WAM), including AAD.BrokerPlugin, and user-profile management or roaming as possible scenarios. Rebooting may provide temporary relief; Microsoft also points to Outlook on the web, Office web applications, and mobile apps as workarounds.
For a business account, ask the Microsoft 365 tenant administrator to open a support ticket in the Microsoft 365 Admin Portal. Do not disable ADAL or WAM as a workaround: Microsoft links to guidance that disabling them is not recommended.

When the steps do not match your case
Return to the exact failing action and error code before continuing. A repeated HTTP 500 while accepting a calendar calls for Microsoft Support; an app that will not launch belongs on the repair path; and a desktop sign-in failure marked [1001] belongs on its dedicated workflow. For Outlook.com access issues, consult Service Health rather than assuming an outage or a local device fault.
